AAaaaaaaghhhhhhhh - update

I said I would never use this board to vent but AGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH.

DS15 came home last night with a huge swollen ankle from a soccer game. We've been icing and icing it but it still looked ugly this afternoon so spent a wonderful 7 hours at Childrens Hospital to find out that they are not sure if its fractured because sometimes it takes a week to see that on an X-Ray when its that swollen. So the poor kid is now in a rather large temporary cast for a week and we see a specialist next week to see if he'll need a permanent cast. To top it off, I was so upset, I scraped the front of my new car against the side of the garage...its going to need repainting in that spot........ *sigh* would someone please pass me the Baileys.

Ohhh, I am so sorry for the woes you are experiencing right now. You can vent here anytime - we are like a big family afterall!

Jo, thank you. I was at a real loss what to do - cancel or wheelchair it but the Usf boards are helping sooo much in that respect, phew. I figured if he could still ride those, DW shouldn't be a problem. He's a thrill seeker and I couldn't imagine going to parks and then telling him that he can't ride his favorites.

Off to work, DH is playing slave today, lol

I feel your pain. Last Easter my DS injured his ankle playing basketball only I didn't know something was wrong til Good Friday morning and he called from a friend's house wanting to be picked up. The friend lives on the next street and the fact that my DS was calling at 8:30am told me something was wrong. He was almost 18 at the time and doesn't get up that early.

Anyway he was on crutches and had gone for an xray the night before that indicated that it wasn't broken -- or they didn't think so but couldn't be sure without a follow up xray a week later. It turned out that he had a very badly sprained ankle that required physio but it wasn't broken. It took about 8 weeks of physio for him to recover but he did the exercises as he was told to and is now fully recovered. Surprisingly he did stay on the crutches for 2 weeks and then decided to ditch them but it turned out ok.

It will be ok although I can understand the shock and frustration.

We've gone through this before with DD, only torn ligaments.....kids are always a worry

I'm just trying to figure out how to work around it on our holidays...I guess even the plane is going to cause him problems. hmmm, and I guess BB is out, lol

He hasn't complained once, not of pain, or not sleeping even though I know hes not with that huge cast,,,tough kid, I'm proud of him

Hopefully, it's a sprain, and not broken!! I hope it starts to feel much more comfortable for him during the next 2 weeks.

I broke my ankle when I was about his age, and even with a cast on, nothing would of stopped me from hobbling around WDW!

My DD fractured her kneecap--twice! Both times they couldn't find the crack on Xray until about a week later. Each time they went ahead and treated her for fracture based on her symptoms. She was pretty imobilized that firs week, but after that she used crutches and a wheelchair to do pretty much evrything but ballet. Hope your son recovers beautifully ( and quickly!)

Thanks . Posts like these are very encouraging. I'm very anxious for Monday to get here so we can see what we are looking at and how to prepare for our trip. I figure its probably fractured or they wouldn't have put him in a cast.... both kids have had sprains before and they would wrap it but never cast it.

Let us know what happens. I think the cast vs wrapping thing depends on the doctor as our doctor said that we could get an inflatable temporary cast thingie or just wrap it and not put any weight on it. My DS's ankle was so black and blue and swollen that they just wrapped it but he wasn't allowed to put any weight on it whatsoever til the second xray was done to confirm that it wasn't broken. I have to admit the swelling and bruising was more than I'd ever seen on anyone but it all worked out and I was more concerned than he was. Since he ended up pulling 3 out of the 4 ligaments in his ankle he still has to wrap it to play sports as a preventative thing but otherwise he's fine and was fine by June 6th when he marched 9 miles in the Dday parade -- it happened the Thursday before Easter. I was amazed at how fast he recovered!

Thanks...he's in a real cast, I guess I called it temporary because they have to saw if off on Monday to re-Xray. The fact that your DS's ankle was also very swollen and purple gives me hope.

If your DS still has soreness, my DD also went through this (hockey) and they made her molded cast to give her ankle support when she skating or standing for a long time. She swears by it. Its not exactly a cast, its hard plastic that they mold to the shape of your ankle/leg and it straps on.

DS ankle was at least 3 inches swollen at the ankle part if I remember correctly. The physiotherapist took measurements the first time we went in of both feet, both ankles and up the leg to the knee. I was amazed at the difference in terms of inches between his two legs and ankles so there is hope for your son. I never realized before this happened how bad sprains could be.

He doesn't complain at all about the pain but in his case since he's pulled the ligaments once it's a lot easier (according to the doctor) for him to do it again so wrapping it while playing basketball gives him a little extra support so hopefully it doesn't happen again. He actually complained very little about pain although he must have been in a lot of pain.

Yep, its broken. They put him in a walking cast this time so hes happy about that. They said he will need the cast for at least 3 weeks until I mentioned we are going to DW. The Doc said he loves DW and to bring him back the day before we go and he'll have a real good look. IF it looks good, IF he still uses crutches and IF he can put weight on it with little pain, he MAY be able to go without, lol...alot of IF's. I'm going to plan as if he will still have it because even if it can come off, he will still need crutches or a wheelchair in the parks.
