A WONDERful Christmas on the Mexican Riviera. 12/18/2011 Complete TR

Thanks for continuing your trip report!! It is great and I have gained information that I haven't seen in other reports. Sounds like the spa was fabulous!! Loving it...keep the pictures coming :)

This is a wonderful trip report, and you most certainly are NOT posting too many pictures!

Thank you for all of the insights on travelling with a scooter. We are planning someday on taking my MIL on a cruise, and your information is extremely helpful.

Looking forward to the next installment!

Great I am glad I can help. The scooter does change traveling a bit. I love my scooter because it folds up and makes it more portable. It weighs 58 pounds so I can't pick it up, but one time the battery died on me. I was able to fold it up and pull it behind me like a rolling suitcase. That was when I learned to always charge the battery after every use.

Disney is very handicapped friendly at both the parks and the cruise ships.

Thank you for reading and your comment.

Thank you I try and think about what information I wanted from a trip report when I write. There is another TR from one of my fellow DIS members on the same cruise. I read her report and it was fun to read about the same cruise but from a different point of view. She also did her's live. I used the Internet one time and it cost me $25.00 and that was only because it was so painfully slow. I had thrown away my fish extender cabin list. Well were were also doing a Secret Mickey and I had forgotten the cabin number Brendan's SM. So I had to go online and pull up the list. Man I learned my lesson there, lol

Here is the link to Katherine's TR she is a wonderful lady and actually was the first on out meet thread.

Okay back to proof reading and posting more.

I am also loving your trip report will all of your valuable information as we are getting ready to go on the 1/15 MR cruise! I do have 2 questions if you remember :) Did the ship have you set your clocks ahead 1 hour to Puerto Vallarta time when you got there or did you stay on the ships time the whole cruise? We are also doing the Paradise Beach excursion in PV and you mentioned mango smoothies - yum! Is there a menu of some sort to look at so you know what kind of drinks are available to order? Thanks!!

Day six and it’s our character breakfast. OMG we were all so excited for this breakfast. We quickly got up dressed and headed over but the boat was still rocking pretty hard. All the servers were walking around with sea sick bags. While we were there we pulled into the bay by Cabo San Lucas and things settled a bit. The character breakfast is a blast. The main characters Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, all come around to have a picture taken and/or an autograph signed. But the other fun is the “hats” the servers make out of napkins. Check out the fun we had:

By now we had “parked” the ship: to get to Cabo you must take a tender. They have a process based on excursion time you go to the Buena Vista Theatre to get a ticket and then they call ticket numbers to exit on deck one.

This is the view from our verandah

A picture from a window on deck 4. I love this shot:

The tender process ran pretty smoothly and they kept announcing there was no wait so we decided to head over early and check Cabo out before our excursion. The tender was a little scary to get on because the waters were still a little choppy. I was very lucky because the tender crew and the CMs on our ship were very helpful and I had one person on each arm as I stepped over. Because the water was so choppy every time I went to take a step the tender would pull away from the ship. Eventually it calmed enough for me to make the step over. The tender workers picked the boys up and set them on the tender, oh to only weigh 48 pounds.

Once we got off the tender and went through security we saw all kinds of characters, but not the Disney kind. There are many people wanting to take you on a tour. They are lined up all along the pier. We wanted to see were we needed to meet for our excursion so we knew how much time we needed to get back to it. There are lots of “painted” pirates that will pose for a donation and a toy soldier too. Brendan wanted a picture with a pirate. I posed with him and James took the picture and then James wanted the toy soldier. I took that picture. I did not realize until it was too late that in both pictures they pointed a gun at my child’s head. I didn’t like that very much so I will not post those pictures.

Here is the gold pirate by himself

One of the vendors that asked me if I wanted a tour seemed to be pretty nice so I went back to him. I asked him how long was the tour and how much. BTW he is in booth B-27 his name is Guillermo. I was worried about my scooter, where would I put it? He said he would watch it. I was a little leery but I wanted the boys to see this amazing place pictures don’t pay it justice at all. Guillermo made me a deal $15 for the three of us. Later I learned people were paying as much as $20.00 a piece. I left my scooter at his booth and went off with another man named Rafael who took us on the tour in his glass bottom boat. Okay the boat has a glass bottom but it is so covered in algae it is a green glass bottom boat. The boat was older and had some rust on it. I said a prayer and put our lives in the hands of Rafael. The water was pretty choppy close to the shore but other than that it was beautiful. He took us on the typical tour. El Arcos. Pelican Rock, Lovers Beach, Los Arcos, The Sea Lion Colony and Lands End and then back by our ship then to the dock again. I was a little nervous when we would hit a wave. In my head I was putting together my plan if the boat flipped. How could I grab both boys and get us safely to shore. Okay there are tons of little boats around so help should come quickly, I am a strong swimmer and have more strength in the water than I do on land. It amazes me how much the mind can process in just a few seconds. Everything was fine and my plan was not needed.

On the way back to the dock there was another boat that was feeding fish to the sea lions and pelicans off the back of their boat. I wish I would have gotten video because it was amazing to watch the sea lions come out of the water get the fish and go back under and the pelicans try to take the fish from the sea lion.

CruisetoMexico350.jpg

The one thing I would caution anyone with any mobility issues is that it is very difficult to step up out of the boats. I have no strength in my legs because of the cancer in my bones so that step was almost impossible Rafael tried to help but instead he was pulling hard and was hurting my arm and then I fell in my hip. Some teenage boys were nearby and came to assist. Wow how nice, well maybe not, as soon as my feet hit the dock they put their hand out and said “tip”. I was stunned and gave them $1.00 they looked at me like wow how cheap. In my head I was thinking wow where I come from people help each other to be nice not for a tip. Then I had to stop and think we are not where I come from and I have no idea what their situation is. It all worked out and it was no one’s fault but my own for not thinking it through all the way. I was fine and I took a pain pill and the rest of the day had no issues.

After the tour we went and gathered my scooter, and Guillermo offered to take us whale watching the next day for $60.00. That was a fantastic rate and he seemed to be on the up and up however I had no desire to fall getting out of another boat. He also walked us over to the market area and told us which stores where good ones to shop in. I would recommend him. We went into a souvenir store and picked up a few things just in time to meet for our excursion.

While we were walking around we went a little further than the dock and on the left there was a chain link fence. People had their hands through the fence holding items that they were selling. I went a little further and then I felt a little nervous, maybe this wasn’t a good area, so we turned around. It was strange and I was think why wouldn’t you just set up on the sidewalk, why sell through the fence? We headed back where we came from.

Thanks for the great trip report so far! As a mother (my two girls are also adopted... from Ukraine though), I enjoy hearing a mom's perspective!

Quick question: which side of the ship was your cabin on? I'm curious since you have some nice view shots. We didn't get a verandah, but I'm still hoping for a nice view from our starboard side cabin.

Thank you for reading this. We were in the aft, the very back of the boat. You feel the waves a bit more there but the views are to die for. If possible I will try and get the same room or at the least the aft every time I cruise. I am hoping to do another cruise for Spring Break or Summer. I just have to figure out how to pay for it lol. On Deck 7 if you walk all the way to the back there is a "secret" sun deck. It is a small deck right in the center. Our cabin was the first one on the left of that deck. you could get almost the same shots from there. The only down side is we lost privacy because people would look around the wall on to our verandah. I just learned early on to put on a robe if I was having my coffee out there.

We met our tour group on the pier and walked over to the dolphin swim building. It was a little cold I had brought a backpack with the boys swim suits and I got towels this time. We checked in and the boys were given wet suits to wear. They went and changed into their swim suits and then I helped them put on their wet suits. Even with them on they were a little cold. The boys were taken off by the trainer and the parents were brought to an observation area. I could have bought a package where I could join in the swim but each child needed an adult with them. I was just as happy to watch. Warning you may not take any pictures at all. They have photographers taking lots of pictures that you are offered to buy. For all the pictures for one child it is $95.00 and $139.00 for two children. That included two prints and the CD. Of course I bought the package. As the swim started the other parents and I realized the $100.00 each to swim was only part of the fee. Heck if they had a video I would have bought that too.
At the beginning Brendan aka “Mr. Adventure” was up for anything they asked him to do. He was the first one to get on the dolphin and let it take him out in a big circle in the pool. James was a little apprehensive about the whole thing, but then he did it. I was so proud of him to overcome his fear and just have an adventure, which was a huge thing for him.

The total package that I purchased had 102 pictures and two prints. They added some of the dolphins by themselves and some of the local scenery.

After that we were tired and headed back to the ship. We had a pretty busy day. Dinner was Pirate night so we changed into our pirate best and went to Animator’s Palate. The appetizers that night all sounded good. I ordered three. The crab cake..Pretty good, the pot stickers..Better and the pineapple….Very yummy. The boys each got pot stickers too. For dinner James got the short ribs. I tried to explain those weren’t the ribs he was used to, he likes pork ribs. He got them and wasn’t happy with them. Both boys got the Shrimp and Scallop Pasta I got mine without the scallops. I was so full from the appetizers I didn’t eat much at all. The pasta on the ship was always undercooked IMHO. I like my pasta al dente but this was almost still crunchy. For desert James got his donuts but told me that he only wanted one: he was getting tired of donuts. WOW. I got both no sugar added deserts. The banana chocolate crepe…Yummy and the Strawberries on Angel food cake…Okay. They were selling light up cups and yes I bought them. The boy’s cups were like a beer glass with a button on the bottom that turns the light on, the light changes from blue to red to green. My cup was a Pixie cup with the fairies on it and a light up Tinkerbell on the straw. I don’t know if it showed in any of the pictures but I have a Tink tattoo so that was an easy sell.

We were going to try and make the pirate party at 9:45 but Brendan’s tummy was bothering him and then he got sick and didn’t make it to the bathroom. I asked are room host for some stuff to clean it up with. I was not expecting someone to clean it up, but they sent “The Hit Man” his cart even had that on it. He had gloves and a mask and an apron. He cleaned the floor the wall the door brought out the trash can and gave us a fresh new one. That was quite a treat to not have to clean it up.

After he got sick I laid some towels on the bathroom floor and brought his blanket in there because he was not sure if he was going to get sick again. My boys are always fighting yet I left the bathroom for a minute and came back to find this:

CruisetoMexico374.jpg

James is always saying he doesn’t like Brendan and loves to do the older brother torture treatment on him. I have evidence that her really cares.

CruisetoMexico373.jpg

From what I understand we didn’t miss much, on the board and by talking to people the show was way too long. It starts late for some kids and then it goes on and on. I still would have liked to experience it on my own. After I got Brendan settled in my bed of course we watched The Green Lantern and went to sleep. I tried to see the fireworks but I missed them. Both boys were asleep before they started at 10:30.

The TV had ship information channels, one that showed the view from the bridge another that showed where on a map the ship was. There were channels that gave information about DCL’s recycling and what happens to the garbage on the ship. There were shows that gave behind the scene info on the shows onboard. On channel showed the shows in your room. We watched The Golden Mickeys from our room. Then there were channels that played the same movie all day and night. The Green Lantern, The Grinch, The Santa Clause, and other Disney movies. There was also the ABC sitcom channel, The Middle, Modern Family Suburgatory, and Melissa and Joey.

Just like almost every other day it was room service breakfast. We probably did room service two or three time a day without fail. Sometimes it was for breakfast and sometimes a snack. We were pretty lucky being on deck 7 aft it was only 2 decks away from the drink station. We were also close to the quick service food stations. James would go get him fries and I found Goofy’s Galley on the second day which had fresh fruit that Alex our room host would remove it if I left it put of the fridge. They also had sliced fruit watermelon and pineapple were my favorite two. There were wraps and sandwiches. The sandwiches were about an inch to maybe an inch and a half. I would get a turkey with cranberry sandwich. The most amazing thing is that I managed to lose 10 pounds on this cruise and still eat whatever I wanted. Yeah!!! My goal was to come off the same weight I went on, but his was way better.

Today is a short day in port, that and with my fall yesterday I decided no whale watching tour, instead we explored the ship. We went to deck 10 so we could go to the furthest and highest points on each end of the ship. We went by the pools but never swan on the ship. On sea days the pools were packed and we had other things to do and on this day it was still a little cool the boys didn’t want to swim.

We got lunch at the buffet and ate on the deck. It was nice to sit outside and enjoy a meal together. We ate snacks on the verandah or I would have my coffee out there, but having lunch together on deck nine was just plain nice. We had a beautiful view of Cabo and there were Sea Lions swimming everywhere you couldn’t miss them. We never saw a whale or dolphin, but others did.

We spent a lot of the day time hanging out and having fun. I had planned of starting to pack but never got to it.

For a reason I don’t want to publish, but no reflection on the cruise I took Brendan out of the kids clubs on day four. James wouldn’t go without him so we had been together every day and it was really nice. When I would go pick them up Brendan would not want to go and he would be cranky for about half an hour after I got him. So it was nice to have Brendan in a good mood. We decided to return the wrist bands a day early so I wasn’t waiting in line tomorrow. So far we had been lucky as far as lines were concerned. Often we would be in the right place as a line was being formed. We also went to guest services to check my bill and fill out the tip paper. While I was there a CM named Marco was wrapping a present. I asked him where he got the paper because none of the stores sold paper or gift bags. I brought enough bags for Secret Mickey gifts but none for the gift I brought my own kids. He was nice enough to give me what he had left and a roll of tape too. Thank you Marco I really appreciate it.

Our DIS group had a Secret Mickey reveal in one of the group member’s suite. They had the royal Walt Disney Suite. She gave us the tour, thank you Katherine for organizing the Secret Mickey and hosting the party. The suite was amazingly beautiful. It was also nice to have one more little get together before the end of the trip.

Meeting people before the cruise was an added bonus to this trip. Everywhere we would go there would be another member from the DIS group. Paul was everywhere to the point my kids thought he was working for Santa. Monica and I would run into each other in the laundry room or the hallway and have mini conversations. If we are lucky enough to ever get to go on another Disney cruise I will be sure to go to that meet thread and do the fish extender again. It added another level of fun to the cruise experience.

Dinner was in Parrot Cay again this night was the Til We Meet Again menu. I thought that meant lobster, I was wrong. Tonight was semi-formal, so we put on our fancy clothes as the boys like to say, and headed to dinner.
CruisetoMexico390.jpg

James had chicken sate and Brendan has artichoke spinach dip, I had potato leek soup. The boys had steak from the kids menu. I had the blacked chicken salad. I loved the salad but did not like the blackening spices. I didn’t eat the chicken only the salad and it was pretty good. I had the no sugar added chocolate cheesecake it was okay a little flat.

Tonight I gave DeDe and Aaron bags of candy (chocolates) and international calling cards. I told them I was giving it to them so they could call their family for the holiday. I have no idea if they can use those cards on the ship, but I hope they helped. I had read that CMs like getting candy and calling cards in addition to the tips. I had planned the calling cards for the CMs in the kids clubs but there were too many CMs working in the clubs. We never really bonded with a certain one, so I saved them for our servers.
After dinner we went back to the room and I changed into more comfortable clothes the boys wanted to stay in their dressy clothes. We went to watch the Muppets movie. It was really cute and we really enjoyed it. I left my scooter and sat in the first row with the boys, heck it was only one stair. Any chance I could walk on this trip I did. When we did laundry I walked to the laundry room and back several times.

When we got back to our room beside the normal towel animal and chocolates we found a box of chocolates and a lithograph from DCL. What a nice gift.

CruisetoMexico398.jpg

I had the boys change clothes because we were going to hit up the dessert buffet at 11:15 PM.. Brendan’s tummy was still a little off so he wasn’t interested but he had to come, James was so excited for it. Again we lucked out as far as the line went. The server wanted to sit us far from the buffet; I asked if we could be closer because of my limited walking. She said you are in a scooter you will be fine. I explained it’s hard to drive the scooter and fill the boy’s plates and mine too. I like to park the scooter and walk through the buffet. She still wanted me to go to the back, and then in came Palo our head server who told her to seat us next to the buffet. Considering it all I only had two instances of non Disney like service in eight days. That is pretty amazing.

The boys went to bed easily tonight so Santa could come. The fact that it was very late helped too. Once they were asleep the jolly man came by and I helped him fill their stockings and put my gift under the tree. Santa reminded me that he was leaving everything else at our house so we could open them when we got home.

In their Christmas Jammies

CruisetoMexico408.jpg

Santa sure did fill the stocking with lots of candy and little toys. Mom bought them MP3 players but I didn’t add any songs to them so they really couldn’t use them. The irony of it all is they were a last minute gift because they are small and easy to hide in the suitcases. I wanted them to have something from me on the ship. The boys each bought me gifts at the little store their school has every year. We opened presents and just hung out until lunch time.

Today we went to Parrot Cay and lucked out because it was seafood buffet day. We all had lots of shrimp and cocktail sauce. I made a fantastic salad just the way I like it. Brendan had some salmon. I don’t like fish so it was nice that he could eat something I don’t cook. I like shrimp crab and lobster, that’s it. After lunch we went back to the room. The boys played some more and I started packing. The ship was rocking quite a bit at this point. I would have to get a pile of clothes on the bed to pack then lay down for a minute. Pack that pile then lay down. I took my anti nausea meds but no luck. So our last day was spent packing and being nauseated.

Dinner was at Triton’s and it WAS lobster night I don’t care how ill I feel I am going to eat some lobster lol. For an appetizer the boys had cold crab legs. I had potato leek soup. All during my illness when I am queasy if I eat something with potato or even a potato it helps settle my stomach and yeah it worked again tonight. We all ordered Lobster and the boys both got Spaghetti and meat balls. I got the roasted turkey and the lobster. The turkey wasn’t so good this time, but I had a lobster sitting right next to it how do you compare to a lobster when you are a turkey. I can’t remember dessert. Tonight we gave our tip envelopes to our servers. I added another calling card to Aaron and De De’s tips. We gave Alex his envelope and the boys took a picture with him.

CruisetoMexico448.jpg

As far as room hosts go he was fine but he did not go out of his way to be spectacular. He didn’t do anything wrong but you could tell he had a certain way of doing things and he was not going to deviate from that at all. For example every night I would move the box of tissue from the vanity to the night stand between mine and the boy’s beds. James and I have allergies and often use tissue throughout the night. Every morning he would move the box back to the vanity. he would remove fresh fruit from the room: oranges or bananas that hadn’t been peeled so we had to keep them in the cooler box. But he cleaned the room very well and anything I asked for he got.

Aaron and DeDe were amazing and made us feel like we were the most special guest they had, and I know they did the same for every table. The Chang family that sat next to us felt the same. Every table felt like they were their favorite table. So for them I gave an extra amount in the tip and the extra gifts I brought along with me.

CruisetoMexico447.jpg

So today it all ends. This is where a lot of trip reports end. I needed more from a trip report so I am going to give you a little more. The night before you get off the ship your luggage is to be packed and waiting in the hall with the luggage tags you were assigned by 10:00 PM anything not in the hall you will have to carry off the ship. Our tags were Red Mickey. The ship docks back into Los Angles around 7:30 am: you won’t get off the ship until around 9:00 am.

Everyone is go to the same place they had dinner the night before at 7:30. After breakfast you will be told what lounge to go wait at. We ate in Tritons and our lounge was Wavebands. If you are carrying all your bags off the ship you may get in line to disembark. We went to wavebands and waited for what felt like forever for our tag to be called. First they called Ariel…..Then green Tinkerbell……Then pink Minnie. Lucky for us another DIS family that we had met was waiting in the same lounge. They were originally from Germany; they moved to Australia for a few years and were in the process of moving back to Germany. This cruise was something they were doing on the way back. It was nice to talk to them about their move and the things they have seen in their journey thank you NarrabeenSteph for the conversation. Finally we were called; we walked out the same way we came in but nowhere near as excited. No applause no announcing that the Di Ciaccio family was leaving the ship. Brendan was holding back tears and James had shut down. They had such a good time it was a shame to end it all. After walking through and showing out passports to a couple people we went to our luggage room. Ours was #5 that is was the Red Mickey Room. We went in a tracked down our luggage and then got a porter to help us out.

The luggage room:

CruisetoMexico459.jpg

CruisetoMexico458.jpg

The porter helped us to the cab area. That was another concern. I hadn’t made transportation arrangements because I didn’t know what time to have them pick us up. The cab was about $44.00 and then I added tip so it was around $50.00. The driver wanted cash. I told him up front I had no cash I was going to use a card. When he got to the airport he tried for cash again.

The other thing I noticed is when you are on the ship anytime you see another person you exchange niceties. “Hello how are you?” or ‘ are you having a good time”. People would hold the elevator door for each other or any door: everyone was really nice. As soon as the cruise was over they were back to bumping in to you and not saying excuse me or pushing so they could be first. I was amazed at the change in the passengers when they have to re-enter real life. The magic was truly gone. Bought not for us I try to be positive and treat each day as the gift it is. I remained happy and pleasant and instead of being sad that it was over I tried to remain grateful for the amazing present from my amazing Fairy Godfather. Hopefully soon my social security claim will be approved, and I will be able to book another Disney cruise, I have already picked a couple out. There is the 14 day to Hawaii in April or October. There is a back to back in April that would be the Pacific Coast and Alaska. Heck I would still love to get a Caribbean cruise too. And maybe there will be a Panama Canal or Trans Atlantic Cruise. But until I can cruise again I will hold the memory of this magical adventure in my heart.

Things I brought that I used. Clothes pins, scissors (I brought safety scissors) extra camera batteries and SD card, backpack, magnets not just for decorating. We each had one for our KTTW card lanyards. Lanyards for the KTTW cards, individual mesh shower sponges. Room deodorizer for the bathroom: 3 people one bathroom need I say more. Ziplock bags I really was glad to have those. Bandaids.

Things I didn’t use: I packed way too many clothes. I brought two outfits for each day for the boys. Clothesline, extra backpack, I used one for my carryon and I packed an empty one. Once we were in the room I emptied the carryon backpack so it could be used for excursions. A heating pad, there was no place to plug it in. Over the door organizer, there was no way to hang it. I brought wreath hangers; they were not wide enough of the doors. I tried magnets but they weren’t strong enough. I also had enough space to put all our stuff, but remember we had a larger room because it was accessible. Full size lotion and body wash. They have a really good line: we never used our stuff.

Things I wished I had packed: Extension cords, OTC medications (cold medicine, Pepto, etc.)

So that's it for my trip report if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I also recomend writting one when you get back, it kind of helps with the post cruise blues.

Happy cruising

Dianne

Dianne, that was a lovely report--thanks so much for posting it and all your pics of the ship and your cute boys. We don't go until late March, so still three months away, but I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I love reading reports while I wait, so thank you again for posting!!

Oh how I remember the anticipation I only waited three months for our cruise. I can't imagine waiting for a year or more. I don;t have that kind of patience.

I must say I am so jealous of you. I never thought I would have cruise envy but here I sit with a big heaping helping of it.

Today my prints from Snapfish came in and I put them in the album I bought on the ship. It made me miss it all over again.

I went on a Carnival Cruise a long time ago but it wasn't nearly as magical as the Disney. I think the fact that I got to share this with my two favorite guys helped make it that much better.

Enjoy your cruise and I hope it is as wonderful for you as it was for us.

Dianne

Thank you for an amazing trip report. I think DW and kids are staying in your room or very close on our 4/22 cruise, deck 7, category 6A accessible aft. Hopefully we will have a better cabin steward.

I take it you would recommend your serving team? I am about to have my dreams TA request our team....trying to determine who is the best!

You are most welcome and thank you for the compliment. Our room was
7638. I don't know if they change the room hosts or not. He wasn't bad he was just set in HIS way. It actually cracked me up I do however wish he would have stopped throwing away my bananas and oranges.

I did not know you could request a certain team. Nice to know so if I should score another cruise I know who to ask for, unless we go on another ship. I have already found 3 I want to do this year. Now I just need to find a giant sack of money laying around with a big red bow on it.

Do you get a better price through a TA than you do thorough DCL?

Have a great cruise.

Great trip report! Thanks for sharing your family' adventure. I will keep you and the boys in my prayers in hope that you keep beating the cancer.

Thank you so much I look at prayers as votes to stay on this reality show called life. I know that sounds funny but I truly believe God listens and the more prayer the better off you are.

You get the same prices through a TA, but travel agents give you better on board credit.

As a special education teacher, I particularly enjoyed reading how you dealt with your son's special needs. If I may ask, is he an aspy? If you prefer not to share that information I of course totally understand. All in all it sounds like both boys did great! I am glad you got some alone time, that is SO important for any parent!

I will keep your servers in mind, you can request a certain serving team and if they are on board you usually get them.

thanks again!
Charles
