A whole new world with a borrowed teen and a backache (June 2016)

I wasn't completely sure where to post this, so I'm making it into a pre-trip report. Here it goes...

My husband and I are heading down to WDW on June 3rd! I've had a combination of excitement, nervousness and a bit of fear while planning. Why fear, you ask? We are no strangers to Disney! Let me explain...

A little over a year ago I had this bright idea to take my 13 year old sister-in-law on a Disney trip. We've been trying to get the in-laws to Disney, but after years of resistance we finally decided to bring her on our own.

DH and I are both late 20s without kids. Needless to say I have very little experience with kids, or... *gulp* new teenagers. This alone made my planning a bit different. She's new to WDW and at that age where she may think she's too old for it. (Of course, I know she's not. I was 19 on my first WDW trip.) However, she loves Star Wars and promises to ride all the thrill rides that I usually ride solo.

After months of planning I finally started feeling more confident about it all. Until yesterday...

Yesterday afternoon DH told me he was having back pain at work with plans to see the onsite nurse. When he came home he could barely walk. I've seen him cry a total of one time in nearly 10 years and he was fighting the tears, so I knew the pain was legit. We went to the orthopedic center, and they diagnosed him with nerve inflammation. Sounds pretty basic. I'm thankful that it wasn't a disc problem or worse... but it still isn't a tickle. He's on some type of steroid pack, and he seems mildly improved today... but we leave in 10 days.

I know it's really awful for my first thought to go to Disney. In my defense, he thought it too. How will he manage the 10 hour drive? Will he even be able to walk when he gets down there? Forget riding anything bumpy... he loves BTMRR.

I asked him if we need to cancel, and he said "no way are we cancelling." So he is determined to carry on with it, even if he can't do much when we get there. I know the fact that we are bringing a first (and maybe only) time guest makes the idea of cancelling even worse. It would be disappointing on any trip, but this makes my heart break a little.

He is starting physical therapy tomorrow, and hopefully he will be back to normal soon. But this has never happened before, so we have no point of reference. I know other people have suffered an injury right before a trip, so I'm hoping some of you may have advice. I know there are wheelchairs (though I don't know if I could push him far) and powered chairs. I have no idea how to get one if needed. At this point I don't know what will be needed... I'm still hoping he will fully recover by then.

We are also now looking at flying down. My mother-in-law said she would cover her daughter's airfare, but it is so late now. I've read about adding magical express late in the game. You just have to pick up your own luggage, correct? I know a couple hour flight would beat 10 hours in a car... but its extra money we didn't account for in the budget.

10 days. It's funny how a day ago 10 days felt forever away while counting down to vacation. Now I'm thinking, "oh no! I hope 10 days is enough to heal and get ready."

I'm trying to keep a positive outlook. A WDW vacation is a luxury, not a need. If cancelling meant DH would never have this pain again, I would do it in a heartbeat. However it turns out, it will be okay. Maybe when it's all over I'll come back and give an awesome trip report. I've never done it, and always meant to write one!

In the mean time, any advice is welcome. If you're a parent to teens and have advice or if you've visited the world while injured... I'm all ears!
