Okay, so when you've done Disney 16 times together in 15 years, you're kinda looking for something different. So we figured what the heck, let's get married this time. Big Al says Let's elope, but he has met me before and knows I can't keep a secret. He has also met my family and knows they won't need an invitation they'll be coming anyway- at least for the wedding part.
So when it was decided, YES we would get married this trip I called Disney to get a price on a wedding. "We have an Intimate Wedding for $2100 for the bride groom and 8 guests" I go through my mind to think how many members of my family will be pushy enough to come...."How about 12?" I ask.
"Then you'll have to do a Premium wedding with a minimum expense of $7500"
Sorry Disney- Looks like we're getting hitched somewhere else. Lucky us, Big Al's cousins just built a house in Melbourne and it's big enough for a small wedding. Truthfully, it's big enough for a small army, but we'll take their offer!!!
So after spending 2 months of my life on the internet ordering flowers, favors, decorations and all that stuff....we head to Orlando!!!
And not a moment too soon-
1/15 the forecast is for 35 below zero windchills in Boston, so I'm pretty happy we're leaving THAT behind.
We get to Cocoa Beach and the plan is to go to Titusville on Friday 1/16, pick up the marriage license and head to Kennedy Space Center. We had reservations for 1/15 and 1/16 at the Luna Sea Resort in Cocoa Beach. I booked there for no other reason than I could relate well to the name. Lucky us, It's a nice clean small family run motel with a complimentary continental breakfast. It's not far from the cruise ships, so if you are in the area and looking for a place to stay, I give it the thumbs up! Not a deluxe resort, but great for a night or two. We are so happy to be walking outside that night that I don't want to go back to the room. Finally we do and Big Al wants to sleep with the door open.....come now, let's not be ridiculous!
I compromise and we sleep with the AC on low, even though it's only 50 degrees outside. Hey we just came from New England.
1/16 we get lost trying to find the courthouse, so Big Al pulls into a gas station and profiles the person "most likely to have seen the inside of a courtroom" and asks for directions. Apparently his profile instincts are right on the mark and we get there with no further problem.
We get there and there are seperate applications one for the bride and one for the groom. Wouldn't you know I got the first question wrong! Yes, that would be NAME. Well on the Bride's application it said
Name: First Middle Last Maiden
so I wrote my first, my middle HIS last, and my maiden name....I think the clerk thought I was trying to marry my cousin. Which, by the way, I found is NOT against the law in Florida, but thankfully she was as creeped out at the thought as I was. We manage to get through and leave with the application in hand and we head to KSC.
As we park I tell Big Al to lock the doors. I could care less if the rental car gets stolen, but dangnabit I've waited 15 years to fill out that application and if it gets stolen then there will be a bigger problem at Kennedy Space Center than the one Houston had.
We spend a great day at KSC- we do Astronaut encounter with Sam Gemar, a bus tour out to Saturn V Appollo Center and have lunch there and watch a re-enactment of the lunar landing- We visit the Launch Status Center where someone asks about the announcements Bush just made about ending the shuttle program in 2010 and starting a better program in 2014 and the gentleman answering the questions restrains from rolling his eyes as he answers that we'll have to hitch rides to the space station with the cosmonauts for those 4 years. We try to get into the I-max theatre and watch the Space Station movie narrated by Tom Cruise, but it's sold out. We leave KSC and thank goodness the car is still in the lot.
The next day we head to Melbourne to prepare for the wedding.
1/17 We prepare for the wedding and we find this great place at Pineda Causeway in Melbourne that sells Lobster Rolls that are as good as the ones we get at home.
1/18 I won't bore you with the wedding details--we had a ceremony and we sat in the living room, ate wedding cake and watched the Patriots become the AFC champs for the second time in 3 years and earn their spot in the Superbowl. It's a great day!!! And it only gets better that night when we check into Beach Club Villas...

All photos are by Randy Chapman who is a photographer in the Orlando area. He often does family portraits as well as other photography at DISNEY- so if you are looking for a professional photographer I HIGHLY recommend that you call on him. And while we NOW share the same last name, we are in no way related. He's a great guy!
He can be reached at www.chapmanphotography.com
