A wedding at home and a wedding at Disney?

Ok, so what have people done that really wanted to get married at Disney, but knew that a lot of friends or family wouldn't be able to come to Florida?

Have you had your wedding at WDW then held some sort of ceremony or party at home afterwards for the people who couldn't come?

we are having a WDW wedding next year and we are going to host a reception hear and then maybe a blessing so the grandparents can see us sort of get married.

We thought that not many people would come with us but we have around 20 so far and people are still to confirm if they would like to come

I think you have to do what makes you guys happy, we always said that if we got married then it would be abroad as its so much cheaper that it is here. We have looked into costs and we think we can get everything for the wedding and honeymoon with spending money for around£10000 compare that with the average wedding in the uk costing around£25k you are sdaving and getting a unique wedding

my df sister got married last august and it cost them £30k and it was a lovely wedding but you would not have thought it cost that much

Well I'm just looking into possibilities at the moment, would loooooove to get married at WDW but know that there'll be many people who won't get there.

I agree, you have to do what makes you happy and what you can afford! we are having a Disney wedding and we are going all out on the honeymoon cause we are saving loads by getting married at Disney. We will have a small reception when we get home for those that cannot attend. I did look into getting married again here, but it didn't seem worth it.
My brother got married last year and I think it cost them above £20,000, not including their honeymoon. So far we are spending about £9000, but that is everything included and we are getting everything we could possibly want, it really is a dream come true

Are you both taking 14 night holidays at Disney and having the wedding within this period (therefore kind of incoporating the honeymoon as well!)?

I hadn't thought about it before, but you get to have your wedding and honeymoon all at once!

Caitlin, tell me the details about your wedding too, I see you have Sea Breeze Point booked, what sort of package have you got planned?

We are going for 3 weeks as I really wanted to take a Disney Cruise (3 nights) plus I wanted to go to Universal/Seaworld/Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove. I also didn't want to have to rush around so 3 weeks soinded great.

we are spending 14 nights at animal kingdom lodge then going to a beach in the caribbean for 7 nights.

We want the wedding pavillion and then a reception which has not been picked and then an illumination desset party and of course cinderellas carriage.

We have two best men and two adult bridesmaids and then a 12 year old BM as well, both sets of parents are coming with us and a few friends

We plan to have a reception and blessing when we come back so that everyone can kind of see us get married

Just butting in with my penny's worth . We're doing a blessing/reception when we get back also. Expect about 60 to come to WDW, and about 150 back home.

I'm in the US so I'm not sure if my input will help any...

DH and I were married "twice". The first time here at home. It was easier/cheaper for us to get our license here at home rather than in Orlando. So we got our license, my parents and brother and SIL came down from Ohio to Virginia (DH's parents are deceased) and we all went to the local "Marriage Commissioner's" office to do the legal part. That was a Friday afternoon.

The following Tuesday (just four days later) we had our Disney wedding. It was just DH and me...and it was everything we wanted and dreamed about!

For us, it worked out great. Our family was able to be at the "legal" wedding...and we shared a fantastic Fairy Tale in WDW.

We are having our disney wedding with 18 guests and then having a reception when we come home where we will cut cake, have pics from the wedding and play our wedding tape with family and friends that couldnt come to orlando.

Hmph, just introduced the idea of a Disney Wedding to my mum and she pulled 'the face'.
I'm sure you all know it, the v disapproving one.
I think it's mainly the fact that she doesn't really want to fly long haul again, but also I guess that not all the family can be there. I think she wants to show me off here where everyone can come

Has anyone else had this problem?


Oh and you shudda seen the face when I told her an average UK wedding is £20summatK! Sigh....

Did you not have to pay for a licence for this then as you were already married?

I'm a bit stumped with what to do now.....

meryll - I think many brides have encountered this problem when broaching the subject of a Disney wedding. We initially planned on having just my DF and I, but my mom really wanted to come so in the end we compromised and she is coming for a week whereas we'll be there for 3. My grandparents definately couldn't come because of their health and my brother and his new wife opted not to come. My family in Australia were invited as it's been so long since I seen them, but Orlando is so far away, they too are not coming.
To be completely honest, I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm not one for a big wedding, but I do want a fairytale wedding, and this is exactly what I want.
We intend to have a small dinner at a nice hotel when we get back for all those that couldn't attend. I am having the wedding recorded and loads of pics so my family can see these. Eventually my family understood, they knew this is what I really wanted, plus we are paying for this ourselves so the decision was ultimately ours. Show your mom the Wedding options, she maybe has preconceived ideas about a 'Disney Wedding' I know everyone in my family did. Whatever you want your Disney Wedding to be, you can have it, it really is the place where dreams come true

Thanks for the words of wisdom, it's not like I'm purposefully being awkward, I'd LOVE for all my family to be there, it would be amazing.

Hmmmm.... I'm wondering now, when you ring Disney to book, and they ask for the number of people, what if you really don't know yet? Do you think I need to tell all the family my idea with a rough date before the 12 month booking time, so I can get a rough idea of who may come and who is definitely out?

You would need to have a rough estimate as some of the loactions have restrictions. Sunset Pointe being one with an maximum of 10 or something like that. But most Intimate Celebrations have an max of 20 (inc bride and groom), so if it is above that you would need to look at Custom Weddings which are 10K minimum

I've read conflicting things about Intimates.
Somewhere I've read you can only have 8 guests.
Others I've read you can pay more to have up to 18 guests.
I'm sure I've read both of these things on the official Disney site.
Perhaps it is just to do with the locations, as you mentioned eg. Sunset can only have a max of 10 people in total.

I might end up doing an Intimate at somewhere like Seabreeze with add-ons if it's possible.
Have applied for DVD and brochures online, so when they arrive maybe that'll make things clearer.
