I just wanted to share our family’s travel experience to WDW in December. This is the first time I have had a chance to sit down and write since we have been back. Let me introduce our family my DW is a 38 teacher and we have two beautiful DD aged 8 and 5. We live in Melbourne Australia which is right at the bottom tip on the east coast of Australia,

When I first brought up the idea of travelling to the USA my DW was a little sceptical about our youngest being OK and enjoying the trip. However a week at the Gold Coast in the far north of Australia convinced her she would be fine. The Gold Coast is the Australian Version of Orlando, similar weather and plenty of theme parks (Just on a smaller scale).

As you can imagine planning a trip from Australia to WDW takes a little bit of organising. For me I am a bit of a planning freak and took my time and still made plenty of mistakes mainly due to my excitement to book things prior to finishing all my research.

My first lesson came when I hade 3 travel agents provide me quotes. Our plans were to fly into LAX stay at Disneyland for 2 nights, then fly to Orlando and stay at WDW for 10 nights then to New York for a night and to Las Vegas for 2 nights then back to LA and back home to Melbourne Australia. I gave each of the travel agents the same instructions and views about where we wanted to stay.

My first lesson is travel agents don’t listen, none of them came back with the hotels I had asked for. I specifically said we wanted to stay on site at both DL and WDW. I also told them where in New York I wanted to stay having been there a number of times on business and the type of Vegas hotel. I also wanted direct flights even if it meant spending a little more just because of the 2 DD’s I didn’t want to be changing flights etc.

Apart from NY they got everything wrong and had us staying off site and having multiple changing flights etc. I asked why they chose them and they said “Oh because it will save you money”. I told them I wanted the Disney experience for the girls and didn’t mind spending the money. Having been to DL and WDW before (On the days off whilst travelling on business) I then gave them the hotel names.

During this time the girls and I had been on the internet and checked out all the WDW and DL hotels

They finally came back with quotes almost the same. Lesson two kicks in when I decide to go direct to Disney and have the rooms quoted. This saved me almost $1500. I went back to the best of the travel agents to enquire about the price he said he would match it and leave it with him for a few days.

Three weeks later I rang him and was finally told he could not match it and to book it direct myself. So I did.

At DL we booked into the Grand Californian and WDW we booked into the Wilderness Lodge. I had stayed at the WL once before when I had a few days off and loved it. I especially loved the Whispering Canyon’s informal feel and thought the kids would love it. GC was chosen as we saw a travel show featuring the hotel and again the kids (as well as mum and dad) loved the look of the place.

So the time is now April and we now had all our bookings in place.

We were flying Qantas out of Melbourne Australia to LAX at noon on 20th Nov and due to arrive after 15.5 hours at LAX at approx 9am on the 20th Nov. I used points for 2 tickets and paid for the kids. Don’t you love the idea that you can arrive before you even fly out due to the time difference.

Staying 2 nights at Grand Californian with a 2 day park hopper for DL. Then flying American direct to Orlando at 8am on the 22nd Nov. Little did I realise this was the day before Thanksgiving and one of the busiest flying days of the year, more on that later.

10 nights at WL with a 6 day park hopper and 2 day pass of Universal. We also had plans to visit Seaworld and travel out to the NASA space centre (Wishful thinking).

It was about this time I got onto DIS Boards, I wish I had found it much earlier. I became a member and started to learn a lot more. Here I thought I knew plenty because I had been to WDW before, wow it’s amazing how much you don’t know.

For one thing the last time I was there which was only a few years ago we did not have any ADR’s and just turned up. Now I read you should make them. Thank go we did because we would not have gotten into many of the restaurants we wanted. In the end I left it a bit late and missed out on a few. When we were there walk-ups were being turned away.

The countdown began. During this time the whole family spent time on the internet looking for information to plan our days as much as we could and especially the parks. So happens I start channel surfing on cable and come across a Disney travel show marathon with 6 shows back to back about DL and WDW. As you can imagine these shows were watched quite a bit over the coming months.

You're off to a great start. I can't wait to read all about your trip!:goodvibes

I am a terrible flyer, and I would never be able to fly that long. I hope the flights went well with your kids. Looking forward to your next installment.:)

Hi,
Glad you decided to write a TR. I know one person from Australia. He worked as a camp counselor with my DD 5 years ago. He left for a year to study in Paris and then came back to camp and stayed 4 years. His Student VISA finally expired and he had to go home. Sorry for babbllying, but he stayed with us on an occasional weekend.

Looking forward to the rest of your report.

Hello fellow Melbournite!! Where in Melb are you? We are on the Mornington Peninsula. We have been to both Disneyland and WDW and are doing both parks again in October. Like you say it is hard to come by good deals through the travel agents...they have NO IDEA really what they are on about. I might just have to follow your lead and book myself if it is that much cheaper! Look forward to hearing more from your trip. If you don't mind me asking, do you have any good restaraunt/counter service recommendations at Disneyland, we haven't been since 04 and I'm not sure what to book or plan for. Anyway, take care. :goodvibes

Hey, I'm from Melbourne too!

It's like a Melbourne party in here!! :cool1:

I'm also a teacher! Small world!

Anyway, great start to your trip report! Can't wait to read more! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the replies.

Aussiedaisy I am on the other side of the bay in Altona.

On the restaurants and counter services I must say I love my food and researched the menu's thoroughly before we left. We had relatively few bad meals or should I say less favourite rather than bad.

I recommendation is book well in advance as I left it a little late and some of my choices were gone when I went to book.

My DW love Jiko’s and in fact we went there twice (even after waitress split wine over me). In fact we are planning our next trip and I asked the family which restaurants they want to go back to:

Jiko’s (Of course)
Flying Fish
Artist Point
Fulton’s Crab House (A Little pricey for what you get but kids loved the paddle boat)
Tusker House for Character Breakfast
Whispering Canyon
Teppan Edo

Ones they don’t want to go back to are:

Raglan Road
Brown Derby (Although I did like my meal, service was real slow)
Akershus Royal Banquet
Crystal Palace

Hope this helps.

The story of our flight and stay in LA is coming soon.

Great start! All that flying - I hope that you passed the time without going too crazy. I have to fly to Hawaii in May (my 2nd trip there) and am NOT looking forward to that - approx. 14hr travel time. I don't like to fly and also have this absurd fear of flying over water so spent most of the 1st trip white knuckled! Even when we fly to WDW which is quite short, I can't spend too much energy with the kids because I'm so nervous - its up to DH!
Looking forward to your reports on both DL and WDW.

The Flight

Finally I had finished work and the weekend before we were to leave we packed our bags or should I say over packed. As we were going to NY in December and Orlando we had to take a wide range of clothing. It was a busy weekend with our eldest DD first communion and little athletics for both DD as well as catching up with the family.

On the morning of our flight we were all ready and the car was packed. We headed off to the in-laws place so my father in-law could drop us off and bring the car back. We got to the airport without any problems. This is when I almost had a mini disaster as I left my wallet and phone in the car. Luckily I found a pay phone and called my father in-law and thankfully he had his phone on and he managed to turn around and come back.

We checked in with Qantas which took no more than 5 minutes and went through security and immigration/customs again this took no more than 5 minutes. So we had 3 hours to wait for the flight. So we settled into the Qantas Club and grabbed some breakfast. After a while my DW decided to go duty free shopping and took the eldest DD with her. They came back empty handed, thank god.

Time to board the flight and as we were up the front of the economy section we were one of the last to board. We settled into our seats, having 4 middle seats on the 747. The takeoff was nice and smooth thank god. For all the flying I do it still amazes me how anxious I get.

Well we all settle in for the long flight. It’s not long when the first of many food/drink services arrive. It’s after 12 so I decide to have a beer and relax and watch a movie. The selections are not too bad. All in all there is about 50 movies and the same amount of TV shows to watch as well as documentaries and games.

My 2 DD have themselves all set up watching their kids movies and eating their snacks and drinking their cokes. We have our dinner a choice between chicken and a beef dish. I had the beef and was not too bad along with fresh fruit for desert and a nice Australian Shiraz. We asked for the specially ordered kids meals for the 2 DD. We had a few odd looks from the cabin staff and were told they had 2 spare kids meals so they must be ours.

We got the girls off to sleep and well my DW nodded off, me I tend not to sleep on flights and this one was no different. So, I settled in for a long night of watching movies and reading a book. I managed to watch a whole series about man going to the moon over 5 hours.

Finally the cabin lights were turned back on and we headed off to the toilets to clean up for breakfast. Breakfast was an omelette and ham or continental breakfast. The omelette apart from being a little rubbery was fine in flavour.

We filled in our immigration and customs forms as we closed in on LAX. I reminded DW and 2 DD when we get to the airport to move quickly ti immigration otherwise we would be caught at the back and who knew how many other planes would be coming in at the same time.

Finally the plane was readied for landing and we packed away our things and put back on our shoes and got ready. It seemed like an eternity we were in thick cloud. Suddenly a loud, thud which made me jump a foot in the air. We weren’t in a cloud but thick fog and we had landed.

DD's enjoying their wait for our turn to board at Melbourne airport.

Coming up Our 2 days in LA and posting some photos

I am looking forward to the rest of your TR. I can't wait to hear about your Artist Point experience!

LA – Day 1

As we disembarked my DW went down one aisle with the girls and I went down the other. I got off first and waited just inside for them. A steady stream of people passed but finally they I saw them. So we proceeded to immigration down the escalators and hallways of LAX.

We arrived at the queues for immigration and it looked like we were the only plane so it was not too bad. We were around 3 rows back from the front. But there was only 3 officers on duty in the non US resident section. In the past there have been 6-8 officers.

So we waited our turn. Finally the US residents had been completed so they split the lines and took everyone bar 5 people in front of us over to the US resident section so we went straight to the front of the line.

The female officer took our forms and passports and proceed to check our details. She had a bit of trouble reading my hand writing but after taking our photo and finger prints we were allowed into the USA.

I grabbed a trolley and headed over to the carousel and looked for our bags. I could not see them going around and then DW pointed they had already been offloaded and sitting waiting to be collected.

We loaded up and headed to customs. We handed over our forms asked a few questions and shown through.

Finally we exited the terminal and there waiting was our driver. I headed over and introduced myself and he showed us to the door. He explained the car was across the road and suggested we wait whilst he collected it. So we waited and a few minutes later he pulled up in a nice black town car.

So we headed off to our first stop Grand Californian. Not too sure how long the trip was over 30 minutes as I kept nodding off. The kids were wide eyed and asking a million questions. Thank god I was in the font seat so DW had to answer most of them occasionally referring to me for advice.

The sign to exit for Disneyland appeared and the girls excitement was rising as was mine. It was not too long until the driveway to GC appeared and we entered. We were stopped at the front gate by the guard and asked our name. She checked her schedule and told to drive up to the front doors.

We pulled and the driver unpacked our bags and the doorman took them inside for us. Finally we were her at Disney. I went to check in while the girls had their pictures taken in front of the huge christmas tree. The lady who checked us in was very friendly and nice as she explained all the bits and pieces she had given me including maps, postcards, games and puzzles. Then she explained our rooms were not ready and would not be ready till about 3pm. So what do you do for 5+ hours.

We decide to go to California Adventure, so we checked our bags and grabbed what we needed and headed off to find the entrance to the park. We followed the signs and suddenly there it was the back end of CA.

We got our tickets from my wallet and went through. We had our hand stamped so we could re-enter at any time that day. We looked right and then left and then at each other it total shock I think, we were finally here. I think it may have been relief of finally getting her we had gone through so much during the planning stage. I had gone through a business partnership split that got very nasty, a lawsuit from a disgruntled client, suffered a minor stroke because of all of that and started a new job and a new business.

Having been here before I suggested we go left to Condor Flats and the first ride we came across was Soarin Over Califronia. My DW gets motion sickness so she decided to wait for us out the front while me and 2 DD headed inside. There was absolutely no lines as I was to find out later the park had just opened (I really had no grasp of time at this stage).

We were taken straight to the staging area and waited for the doors to open. My eldest DD is a little like her mum and very nervous about rides was asking a million questions all at once. My other DD just stood there watching the screen taking it all in. Finally we headed inside and were seated in the back row. I helped DD’s into their seat and buckled them in and then sat between them.

The lights dimmed and the seats swooped into the air. I looked to my right at my eldest DD and she had a look of terror on her face and I tried to calm her down. She gave me a nervous smile and then the ride started as we swooped through the Californian countryside.

The girls loved the ride as they squealed as we swooped along the river and over the snow capped mountains. Finally the ride came to an end and as we exited the ride both girls were reliving each part of the ride as fast as they could go. We came out and found DW seating on the benches outside and again the girls played tag as they retold the ride to my DW.

We headed to towards the Hollywood Backlot but when we got there we found the rest of the park was yet to open. So as we waited a Santa came out dressed in beach garb so we took a few pictures of him and the girls near the fountain. We walked down towards the back of the park and as we approached the ropes dropped and the park as open as we turned left and went into “A bugs Land”.

As we entered we saw the first show of “Its tough to be a Bug” was showing. So we headed through to the staging area. All the girls were amazed at the intricate detail of the underground lair and sound effects. We had our 3D glasses ready and entered the theatre and headed to the middle of the row. As the crowds were light at this time we had no problem seating in the middle.

The show was fantastic as the girls screamed and laughed all the way through the show. The big highlight as it would be with all kids was the stink beetle and the smell he lets go. We stayed in a bugs land and we tried all the rides. First Flicks flyer as mum and dad watched the girls go round. Then all four of us tried the Ladybug Boogy and Tuck and Rolls drive em buggies. Finally the girls tried Heimlich’s Chew Chew train while a I tested my phone coverage, no problems at all.

After “A bugs Land” we headed back to the backlot and the girls had the first of their photo’s and signature with Mrs Incredible. Unfortunately for them as they waited in line they missed their first look at Mickey and Cinderella as they walked into a store just behind them.

We then headed off to Monster’s Inc which the girls loved especially at the end one of the characters (not sure of their name) insults someone in the car. DW waited outside for this ride not sure why but as we left the girls wanted to go on it again so all four of us went again. This time my eldest daughter got the insult, she was so proud and still talks about it to this day.

From here we headed over to Muppets and sat through the show. Again there were no lines and we got straight on. After the show we headed over to a store just outside and the girls got their first pair of ears. The eldest DD got a blue cap with silver ears with lights that glow in the dark whilst other DD got a cute pink pair.

With ears in place we headed towards the back of the park and looked around Paradise Pier. After five minutes of looking around DW suggested we get some lunch and we headed Ariels Grotto but they were booked out with a huge queue out the front. I really wanted to sit and relax so I suggested we headed back t the hotel and check on the room and have lunch at the Story Tellers Café.

The room was not ready as we knew it wouldn’t be. So we settled in at the café and ordered some lunch. The food was nice I had a cheese burger as did DW. The kids
Both had make your own pizzas. This is where they bring you the base with pizza toppings and you make your won pizza. They take it away and cook it for you.

After lunch we headed back to the park and straight back to “A Bugs Land” we rode around on the rides again and walked around the park. We headed through Golden State and the girls headed to the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. Mum and dad had a bit of trouble keeping up with them as they scooted through the various obstacles and bridges etc.

After 30 minutes in there we headed back out and went to Grizzly River Run. Again mum decided to discretion was the better part of valour and stayed dry. We headed up to the ride and waited in a short queue. We got on board a raft with another family whose kids loved telling us what was coming up. Mum and dad trying hard to tell them to keep quiet and not to spoil the surprises. It didn’t and we loved the ride. The littlest one was swamped by a wave and drenched from head to toe. I was not far behind her in the end whilst our eldest daughter was relatively dry.

We found mum and we all decided we had just about run out of steam. It was about 3pm so we headed back to see if the room was ready. Unfortunately it was still not ready, so we waited. The 2 DD’s explored the foyer area and the fireplace. Having seen it on a travel channel special on the hotel. They went looking for the hidden Mickey in the clock as well.

45 minutes later we were called and given our room. We headed up and found the room, it was comfortable but no view at all. But then again we were not here for the view. Our bags arrived and we decided to freshen up and have a shower which felt great. So long on a place and then the park, a shower was perfect.

That night we headed out to DTD and looked around at the different shops and restaurants. After a while we spotted Ralph Brennans Jazz Kitchen. We had seen it on another travel show so we headed in and were seated on the upstairs balcony. It was a great view of DTD.

The food was great I had Coconut Shrimp and DW had Cajun popcorn Chicken as starters. For mains I had Creole Fillet Mignon and DW had the catch of the day, not sure what the fish was but it was a blackened fish. Both DW had macaroni for their meals.

I really wanted to try Banana’s Foster for desert but unfortunately our littlest one fell asleep almost in her dinner. So it was time to head to bed and get a good nights sleep before we tackled Disneyland tomorrow.

What a great first day, but I don't know how you stayed awake. I would have passed out from exhaustion:eek:

I can say this for certain we all slept well that first night. A good 11 hours sleep for all of us.

I'm just subscribing. I am a fellow Aussie and we leave next Tuesday. Spending 6 nights in Portland Oregon, 12 in Orlando and 3 in San Francisco.

Travel agents weren't much help to me either-the internal US flights I had to find myself to get a decent rate.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your report :)

Portia hope you and your family have a great time. Juts remember don't try to do everything as you just won't have time and make sure you have plenty of time to rest. We scheduled a few rest days where we did nothing but relaxed by the pool and headed into DTD or DW headed to a shopping outlet where she found great deals on disney items (eg same shirt in WDW $25 got them for $8 at the outlet) and also non disney items.

LA Day 2

Well we all woke after a good night sleep around the same time about 7.45. We had a shower and got dressed and headed down to the Storyteller’s Café for breakfast around 8.45. Our ADR was fro 8.30 but they didn’t seem to mind.

We were seated pretty quickly in the front corner on the left as you enter. It was a pretty good seat as we had a good view of all the characters. The girls went off for a song and dance with Chip and Dale and some characters from Brother Bear. Must admit it is one Disney film I have absolutely no idea about the story or the characters. No matter both of my girls seemed to know all about them.

I was dying for a good cup of coffee unfortunately the brewed coffee was like dish water, so I got a Café latté made and it was like manna from heaven. I sipped away on my coffee while the girls had a few pictures taken with various characters. One of the CM came over and asked us where we were from and was it our first trip. The 2 DD’s told her it was their first trip as well as their mums so they were given 1st visit badges and also warden breakfast badges.

The food was great and the variety plenty to keep our family satisfied. Especially the eldest DD is a very picky eater. The rest of us will eat just about anything. Al the girls loaded up on bacon and toast, whilst I stuck to eggs and various other offerings. With all my travels in the US there are 2 things I have not liked one is the bacon and the other is the coffee.

I love bacon but find US bacon offered at hotels very dry and rubbery and the coffee too weak for my taste. Saying that I have always managed to find plenty to eat and enjoy. We polished off our food and then headed to DL for the day nice and refreshed.

We walked through DTD and made our way to the park which is about a 5-10 minute walk at worse. The morning was a little chilly but I thought it would warm up later so I had a t-shirt and shorts on while the rest of the family was dressed lightly but had jackets. I did get a crack from the CM at the entrance whether I was from Montana or something like that. I assumed it must be cold wherever she mentioned and just laughed.

We headed in and took the obligatory video of the DD and DW at the huge Christmas tree at the head of Main Street USA. The girls just wanted to see sleeping beauty’s castle at the other end. They were pointing and walking as fast as they could. We took a few more pictures and video and then headed to Adventure Land.

First stop for me was the Indiana Jones ride. My DW and eldest DD did not want to go on it so it was me and the youngest DD. I loved this ride last time so I was really excited. The queue was 20 minutes so we headed in. Unfortunately my DD was too short. They stood her up next to the measuring post and she was right on the limit, you couldn’t have gotten a bit of paper between her head and the measure. CM said she couldn’t ride. I didn’t bother arguing as he was just doing his job. The funny thing was the Dinosaur ride at AK is exactly the same ride vehicle and the limit is 2 inches shorter, go figure.

I didn’t want the kids waiting for me so we headed off to the jungle cruise. There was no waiting and we hopped on the next boat. The girls loved the ride and the corny jokes of the boat captain. The screams came as the piranha jumped out of the water and the laughs with the men up the pole with the rhino at the bottom.

We looked around adventure land for about ten minutes and then went over to New Orleans square and the Pirates of the Caribbean. My DW was a bit hesitant but I reassured her it was OK. Well she was not so sure after the first drop but relaxed and loved the ride. Again there were no lines and we basically got straight on. The subtle changes to make it more akin to the movies were good to see as were the old favourites such as the auction and the dog with the keys. DD got a big laugh out of that.

Next we went to the Haunted mansion this time it was eldest DD turn to be scared (Even came to tears at one stage) but she came on with me and once we got on the ride she loved it. Mum and sister went first then we got on the ride. She loved the character with the spinning wheel and the ghosts in the ballroom.

Next was frontier land and then critter country. We went on Winnie the Pooh ride. It was the story of Winnie the Pooh and friends which starts out side and go inside. The kids loved this so much so we went on it twice. After the second ride we took some photos near the statues out front.

It was about lunch time so we headed back up to Main Street USA to the Plaza Inn. DW took the girls off to get their food and left me to hers and mine. We both wanted chicken so I waited in line and asked for chicken, I was asked which part I wanted, told then did not matter. Well I got three of the largest pieces of chicken on each plate with mashed potato, beans and gravy.

I found a table outside and waited for the family to join me. After a few minutes saw them wondering around looking for me and waved them over. We sat down and started the meal. Well it was the worst meal on the trip. The mash was powered, the beans tasted soggy with water, the chicken soaked with oil and the gravy, well I was not sure what it tasted like. Anyway I had the chicken and left the rest, that was enough to fill me and DW up. The kids ate their nuggets and fries.

After lunch we went to the Princess Fantasy Fare (I think it was) where all the Princes and Princesses come down on a stage and do some dancing etc. Then they brought out the May Flower Poles with the ribbons and all the kids danced around the poles. It was a great way for us to relax and let lunch go down.

We then attacked Fantasyland riding the Carousel and Dumbo. Our 2 DD loved the ride. The wait for Dumbo was most probably the worse we had all day 30 minutes. To ride such an iconic ride the wait was worth it.

The next ride was the Mad Tea Party where me and our 2 DD had a ride and then we managed to convince DW to have a ride as well. She didn’t appreciate it when we spun the cup as hard as we could. DW gets motion sickness very easy. The crowd at the cups was relatively small with the wait around 10 minutes each time.

We headed back into fantasyland and went to It’s a Small World ride which was great. The kids were singing the tune for the rest of the day. It was great seeing different areas of the world and how they celebrate the holidays.

It was getting late in the afternoon and the trip was again catching up on me so I suggested we head back to the hotel to rest before dinner. The girls all wanted to go shopping so we parted ways at DTD. I went back to the room and slept for an hour while the girls went shopping.

That night we had a reservation at Nappa Rose which I was looking forward to after seeing it on an Samantha Brown Travel special. We had to try the Sizzling Beach Rock which DW and I shared. It had a rock in the middle that is red hot and you sear your food on it like shrimp, spare ribs and chicken. It was lovely.

For mains I had the Angus Beef Short Rib served rare. The meat was so tender it almost fell off the bone. DW had the Salmon for her mains. The kids had cheese pizzas and then had ice-cream for desert. For Desert DW and I had a desert to share with a mix of deserts. During the meal we shared a nice bottle of Californian Chardonnay.

After the meal we head back to the room for an early night as we were on an early flight and had to be on our way to the airport by 5.30am.

In the morning we showered and dresses and were on our way by 5.15am and checked out. Funny enough we were checked out by the same CM that checked us in. I learnt that the private car was much cheaper than the taxi fare. $60 compared to $110.

We arrived at the airport and it was a mad house with people and cars everywhere. TV stations and police cars and trucks lined the drive way as it was the day before Thanksgiving and it was going to be a busy day at the airport. Well we checked in at the curbside which was novel for DW as she had never seen it before. We walked in side and found the line to get through security. We walked back outside and 50 metres down the path and found the end of the line.

Thank god we went early. Well it was not too bad, about 30 - 40 minutes and we were through and waiting for our flight to Orlando.

The flight was on time and we boarded the flight and off we went on our next long flight.
