Congratulations indeed on moving up to the DSLR world. I can't fault your decision of cameras, as I shoot with the same one! You couldn't go wrong in picking a DSLR - just a matter of the right price, feel, and features that suit you.
As Mickey88 mentioned, the Live View is indeed a wonderful and convenient addition to a DSLR for many reasons, but you'll probably find yourself using the viewfinder more often. It doesn't make Live View any less valuable to me, even though I only use it for less than 10% of my shots. For those times you do need it, it's priceless. Taking night shots on tripod, using it for variable angle or waist level shooting, or using dark filters, the Live View definitely makes shooting a pleasure.
If you need any tips on getting used to the camera, lenses, etc, you should be able to get answers to any of your questions from the folks here on Photography forum, and also from the specific Sony/Minolta thread.
Get out and start playing with your new camera, and let us know how it goes!
