I posted several threads here about a month ago seeking advice and asking questions about dslr's. I finally got the Sony A300 yesterday. I had considered the Nikon D40 and the A200, but decided on the A300, because of the live view option. So a huge thank you to everyone who offfered me some insight. :flower3:

great choice, although the live view can be a great thing in certain situations, I would recommend avoiding the mistake of using it all the time, using the viewfinder to take pictures will result in much sharper photos, the reason being ,holding the camera away from your face to take pics using the live view, you are much more likely to introduce blur caused by camera shake.

Congratulations indeed on moving up to the DSLR world. I can't fault your decision of cameras, as I shoot with the same one! You couldn't go wrong in picking a DSLR - just a matter of the right price, feel, and features that suit you.

As Mickey88 mentioned, the Live View is indeed a wonderful and convenient addition to a DSLR for many reasons, but you'll probably find yourself using the viewfinder more often. It doesn't make Live View any less valuable to me, even though I only use it for less than 10% of my shots. For those times you do need it, it's priceless. Taking night shots on tripod, using it for variable angle or waist level shooting, or using dark filters, the Live View definitely makes shooting a pleasure.

If you need any tips on getting used to the camera, lenses, etc, you should be able to get answers to any of your questions from the folks here on Photography forum, and also from the specific Sony/Minolta thread.

Get out and start playing with your new camera, and let us know how it goes!

Yes, I do not think I will use the live view a tremendous amount, but I thought it would make transitioning from the H2 much easier, since I had came to depend on the lcd. I have really bad vision (legally blind) so some times a view finder is not my best friend, though I hope for it to become my best frind, because so far, I like shooting the 300 with it better than the live view.

The weather today is bad so not much playing with my new toy today, I took it out when I walked my dog, but didn't spend any real time out there, to windy and cold. The few I did take though, I am very impressed.

I agree with this statement from zackiedawg
