A tank of gas ended up costing me.....

With our next WDW trip coming up in two months I really didn't need to spend $750. to clean water out of the fuel line of our SUV.

Sorry, but I really need to vent. I started buying the new Shell V Power gas thinking it would be good for our SUV and after two fill-ups it started sputtering and the check engine light blinked on and off a few times. So I took it to the dealer and the code said the engine was miss firing and called GM and they said to check for water in the fuel system and the samples they took each had water in them. So this ended up costing me. DH is now re-thinking taking a vacation after having to spend our spending money to fix the vehicle. I don't want to do it.

It makes me mad that we already pay too much for gas. I paid over $2.07 a gal. for watered down and dirty fuel. It's just not fair and I don't want a greedy gas station to ruin my vacation plans.

And where do I buy gas so this doesn't happen again? GM told the mechanic this is happening all over the country and the gov. really needs to step in and do something.

I'd go back to the station I purchased it from and let them know what happened....they probably won't reimburse you but at least they can let there supplier know .....

Geez- Im suprised your tech didnt tell you to dump a quart or 2 of gasline antifreeze/dry gas in the tank. change the fuel filter and run it for a few miles- 30 or so...

Living in VT we ALL run that in our tanks during the winter- it "drys up" the water...

I'm also a bit suprised at the $750 charge- exactly what did they do?

as a last note- theres NO reason to put anything better than 89 octane in your vehicle, UNLESS it's a Cadi/Vette/Viper etc.... cars today are built to run on REGULAR unleaded...not premium.

Sorry to hear you got what I consider ripped off from your tech/dealer

NO ONE needs anything higher then 87 octane uless it's a high-performance car... or 25+ years old!

I would go to the gas station where I purchased the gas and tell them you want to file a claim. My BIL had the same exact thing happen to him. It ended up costing him about the same amount of $.
To make a long story they reimbursed him the cost of the repair.

actually some cars are designed to run on higher octane gas..

I have a Dodge Intrepid and it's set up to run on 89 octance...

if you use lower octane than the manufaturer recommends , you might think you're saving money, but your gas mileage will drop, you will have a loss of power and run the risk of engine damage...

The majority of the cost was for labor to clean out the fuel line and replacing the fuel filter. DH said we couldn't put enough fuel dryup in it without voiding the warranty because of too much alcohol in the fuel trying to get rid of the water. At least by the look of the gas sample we have. I do plan on calling the station tomorrow because I have the receipt from my gas purchases. I will probably call the Auditor's office to see if I can find out if there are any other complaints. The owners manual states 87 octane is the minimum recommended. You can't win.

stick with 87 octane for best performance and dump a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in your tank every 5-12 months

We had a Shell around here a few years ago that was notorious for watering down their gas (happened to me once, and several other people I know). The only reason why I'd stop at a Shell now is if I'm thirsty.

$750 does sound kinda steep.

I'm familiar with the process you had done. With double tanks,
it's pretty expensive. Water from condensation can be taken
care of with "dry gas", water directly in the gas is another story.
Sorry you had to spend the money. I'd check with the station about reimbursement and maybe the atty gen to see if other
complaints have been turned in.

This has been happening where I live (NW PA -- thanks to United Refining) and also problems with large amounts of sulfur in the gas. The gas company is paying for people's expenses to have their fuel filters, pumps and lines taken care of.


Check into it -- the company may need to reimburse some of your expenses!

That happens more time than you can imagine. But I also think that to charge so much for that was a rip off.
