Is it safe to say for those of us looking at resales, the best way to go is to look for a UY that lines up with the earliest month you might vacation in any given year?

For instance, my kids are young so we often travel Sept-March. When they are in school we'll have the benefit of the NJEA Convention each November, so we'll probably still be vacationing mostly in the fall. Is it a good idea for me would be to find, say an August UY?

This would put my banking deadline in April or May (?), which would only complicate cancelling vacations planned from May through July, right?

Thanks,
Chris

You're thinking correctly. Late use year cancellations are when Use Year really matters. The only caveat is that your current vacation pattern may change down the road and then the Use Year may no longer be ideal. But you might as well "plan for today"

For those who don't already know, the banking deadline is the end of the 8th month following the start of the use year. For example, an August use year's deadline is March 31 and September's deadline is April 30.

You only have to worry about vacations scheduled for the last 3 months of your use year. If you don't cancel at least 31 days prior to arrival, the points go into the holding account. Those points cannot be banked so the banking deadline is moot for late (30 days or less) cancellations.

Ok, so to make sure I'm 100% clear...
  • Any points that have not been banked by the 8th month, have until the end of that UY, then they expire
  • If you cancel any reservation within 31 days of your arrival date (regardless of where you are in your UY), the points go into a holding account
    • Points in the holding account have to be used during the current UY
    • You cannot book any reservation more than 60 days in advance(?)
    • At the end of the current UY, points in holding expire

You are exactly correct.
