A simple question for all of you experts about Use Year and Borrowing

Hello. If I have an April UY, does that mean that I cannot borrow 2017 points until April 1, 2016?

BUT, if I have a reservation for later this year (November), I can "borrow" the 2017 points now, since they aren't technically being used until later on?

We added an extra night to our trip last week and I was originally told that I had enough points to pay for the extra night using points. I went ahead and changed our flights, but when I called back to confirm the reservation, I was told that I didn't have enough points after all and that I had to buy one-time use points. When I logged into my account today, I see that I have 100+ points from my 2017 allotment, but I'm thinking the reason I couldn't use/borrow them is because it's not April yet.

Points need to be available for the reservation dates, not when you book. You use banking and borrowing to move the points to your vacation date UY.

You are misunderstanding UY. The bold is not true whatsoever. With an april UY, the earliest you can make a reservation (or in this case, could have made) for your 2016 UY would have been May 1st, 2015. You could have borrowed 2017 points on that date. 2017 points can not be used to make a reservation for prior to April 1, 2016.

To put it another way, your 2020 points are already in your account. They do not get deposited on a certain date. 2020 points can be borrowed into 2019. So, if you want to make a reservation for the week of April 1st 2019(the first day of your UY), you can call on May 1st 2018(the first day you can book at your home resort for your 2019 UY), and borrow your 2020 points to make it.

As bill said...WHEN you book in not the point, it is WHEN the reservation is.

If you can make a reservation today that will fall in your NEXT UY, then you can borrow today from 2 UYs ahead.

Short and simple - You could call and borrow your 2017 points today for your Nov 2016 reservation.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I wrote my original question clearly/correctly... I'm all set with my November 2016 reservation. I made it at the 11-month mark and borrowed 2017 points in order to make it.

My problem happened last week when I tried to add a night to our February 2016 reservation and wanted to borrow 2017 points to do so (with an April UY). I was originally told that I had points available to use, then I was told that I didn't and I ended up having to buy one-time use points. When I logged in today, I see that I do have points coming to me in 2017. I'm just trying to figure out why I wasn't able to use them and I think the answer is because I can't borrow them for a reservation that takes place prior to April (or May?)... but yes, if I wanted to borrow them to use for a post-April trip, I could do that.

I was misunderstanding. Your 2017 points are valid for stays from 4/1/17 to 3/31/18 or you can borrow them for stays from 4/1/16 to 3/31/17. The other possibility would be to bank them into your 2018 UY for stays from 4/1/18 to 3/31/169. So that is why you couldn't borrow them for the Feb 2016 stay. There would have been ways to get more 2017 points borrowed and allocated to your Nov stay and free up 2016 points that could have been borrowed into your 2015 UY for the Feb stay but we're after the fact now and it sounds like OTU points took care of things. You also would want to be pretty clear on the banking/borrowing times when trying to switch things around like that or to have a MS CM who is well versed on moving points around.

The bright side of all of this is that I will actually have some 2017 points available when it sounded like I didn't have any. LOL!

Pretty much. 2017 Points can be used for a reservation in your 2016(borrow), 2017, or 2018(bank) UY.

February 2016 is in your 2015 UY.

You can not borrow 2017 points for a reservation that takes place prior to April 1st, 2016, the first day of your UY.

When I first got DVC, the easiest way for me to remember what could be used and when was first determine UY of the trip. Any trip can be "paid" for using banked points from the UY prior to travel, points for the UY of travel, and borrowed points from the UY after travel. When you call, doesn't matter, but as other's have said, it is when the trip has.

So, with an April UY, a February 2016 trip would be part of your 2015 UY, and therefore can only be booked with 2014 banked points, 2015 points, and borrowed 2016 points.

Feb 2016 is in your 2015 UY, so u could only use 2015 or 2016 points for that reservation, u could not use 2017 points in your 2015 UY
