A series of explosions in Syrian capital Damascus

A series of explosions and gunfire rocked the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday evening, reports say.
Sources said between three and five explosions were heard in the west of the city from about 1600 GMT. The blasts were followed by heavy gunfire.

The explosions are said to have occurred near the Iranian and Canadian embassies in the city.

They took place on the Mesa highway leading into central Damascus from the Lebanese capital Beirut.

Security sources said the explosions were caused by car bombs, but there has been no independent confirmation of this.

A telling detail about the actual state of affairs on the ground is that the US army is making a world-wide search for armoured Humvees. This is not a war which is getting easier, therefore.

At the moment, these ubiquitous vehicles are often soft skinned and are especially vulnerable in attacks on convoys. According to figures used by the Associated Press, of 15,000 Humvees in Iraq, only 1,500 to 2,000 are armoured.

Some are even being made safer by having steel sheets fixed by local Iraqi workshops.

Syrian television reported security forces had clashed with "terrorists".

The state television said the group started firing indiscriminately, leading to a confrontation with security forces.

Reports from Damascus say at least one of the attackers was killed. Another report says a building housing UN premises is on fire.
