A Salute To All Things Disney, But Mostly Food - A Feb 15 Dining Report - That's a Wrap 7/18

I've been thinking about trying the Samoan at Kona & this has me sold! And I always enjoy a well made Bloody Mary. Good Stuff! :thumbsup2
Samoan going once, going twice, sold to Stefecatzz on her next trip to Kona ; ) There is no way you won't enjoy.

Love Kona's breakfast. I used to always get the big Kahuna but just stick with macadamia pineapple pancakes now since they're the best. But your Samoan is really tempting me. It looks so yummy!
HI Rachel! The pancakes were definitely the star of Jason's plate so I can see why you just stick to them. I think he'll likely branch out and try something new next trip, poor me can't fathom a world without a Samoan in my life again.

Absolutely drooling over the Kona breakfast. I have been dying to eat there! Definitely in November when we stay at the Poly. The pulled pork eggs look so so so good!
It is definitely drool inducing. We're staying at Poly next trip too and I"m sure there will be more than one trip to the land of yummy breakfast and bloody marys.

you are a good food reviewer...thanks so much for great photos and reviews...looks amazing
Thanks so much. Really means a lot coming from the moderator ; )

Love the Kona breakfast! I'm hoping my fiance will get the Big Kahuna when we are there so I can try the pancakes :) I've already had my heart set on Tonga Toast, so pancakes are out :P
Isn't it nice when we can try things off of others plates? I was so gonna kill Jason if he ordered something that didn't include the tonga toast or the pancakes, just to appease me. Secretly hoping he branches out more next time so I can stay in my newly found Samoan comfort zone.

I have a WCC breakfast reservation and I am debating with myself about whether or not to change it to Kona. Thoughts? It's on the day we are leaving WDW, so no park plans that day, just Downtown after for a few hours to waste time while we wait to go back to the airport for our 7:00 p.m. flight out.
I've never eaten at WCC for breakfast, but reviews I've seen have been mixed and the menu looks like pretty standard fare to me. Clearly I'm biased after my experience, but an excursion to Kona is worth the trip alone. I also hear wonderful things about the Trails End breakfast, just haven't tried it out for myself yet.

This report is very interesting with the large focus on food haha. I like it thought. I was interested in reading your experience with the Plaza. That is on our ADR list for the 24 hour event. That is one of those restaurants that I never think about. Or know that it exists. Would you recommend it? I'm encouraged that you liked the reuben, as I like reubens.

We have an early lunch ADR for BOG, then a dinner at BOG at 10:30 pm in case we want drinks and dessert. In between is up in the air. Last year I did enjoy having a sit down dinner for a break. Still not convinced about the Plaza.

I switched to Kona. The menu is definitely more appealing to me than WCC. Also, it will give my son the chance to ride the monorail for one more loop before we leave WDW.

While I can do without breakfast on most days, Jason likes a good one every now and again and today was one of those days. I on the other hand like a good bloody mary, so I obliged.

I love me a good vacation breakfast. And a bloody mary of course, cause hello, i'm leshaface:wave2:

Hello Gorgeous! Despite not being listed on the menu they did have this little gem of a Bloody Mary to offer me. As bloody mary's go this was pretty standard fare, but it had a good spice to it which I love. And it was only $7.25 which I thought was a relative steal. So much in fact that I ordered 2 ; ) Gotta get those veggies in for breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day after all.

That's what I call a head start on the Food Pyramid. Working on that veggie section early is a must.

Jason elected to skip the boozy breakfast and instead ordered the French press Kona Coffee.

Yep, I would have ordered both a mary and the french press. I did work at Sbux for 7 years after all.

This is the kids oatmeal w/cranberries, t
urkey bacon and fruit salad. This was right up her alley as she could add cranberries, milk, and brown sugar to her hearts content. She proclaimed it "good" (gonna have to work on her food review skills) and ate all her bacon and most of the oatmeal, so it must have been.

Ooh this looks really good actually. Something my DS would eat!

Forgot to mention this was our first visit to Kona and while my heart wanted to try the macadamia nut pancakes or tonga toast, my stomach really doesn't like sweet things in the morning.

:scared1::sad::sad2::sad1:

Poached Eggs with Hollandaise served over Smoked Pulled Pork Hash. OMG, this was absolutely amazing. Like praying to the Polynesian tiki gods kinda good. The pork was smokey and tender and instead of a traditional english muffin it had some toasted bread mixed in with the hash. My egg was cooked to perfection and the ooey, gooey runny yoke was the perfect compliment to the pork . The arugula added good crunch and peppery flavor, but of course there is never enough to appease my arugula needs. My only "complaint" which isn't really even one would be the hollandaise. It was good, but really didn't add much flavor wise. For the calories that I can only fathom butter and egg yolk laden sauce brings to the table, I'd probably order it on the side next time.

Alright this makes up for the Tonga Toast. Looks bomb!

Only in disney can grass take a man down.

:rotfl2::rotfl:

Enjoying your TR! Wow, how many days in the MK so far? Sounds fun! Gonna gave to try to Sleepy Hallow waffle sandwiches and am seriously considering adding Kona breakfast.

We tried to get into Whispering Canyon again, but they said the wait was about 30 minutes. So to the Disney app I went and we were able to score a reservation at Kona in about 45 minutes. Plenty of time to get to the Poly, right?
I was going to say that waiting 30 minutes for a meal in a restaurant where you are standing is a lot better than waiting 45 minutes at a restaurant that you have to travel to, until I saw your food pictures. WCC just has food, but Kona looks like it has something special. Jason was probably starving after waiting so long for that Big Kahuna. Do they let people share it?

With our tables in wonderland card we saved $8.75 (aka a free bloody mary).
That they way I look at the savings, too. ;)
Only in disney can grass take a man down.
And it isn't even real grass. :upsidedow We saw Wishes from that fp area and the artificial grass was a good idea. It drains fast. ;)

Great reviews. Can't believe I cancelled Kona last trip it looks fab for breakfast. Your dd is a real sweetie :)

Food? There is food here? I had no idea ; )

I would definitely recommend The Plaza. It's definitely not a signature, nor up there with other table services but it is far superior to counter service options for not much more money. We really liked our sandwiches, fries, and of course you can't go wrong with ice cream

I switched to Kona. The menu is definitely more appealing to me than WCC. Also, it will give my son the chance to ride the monorail for one more loop before we leave WDW.
Good call!!!!

I love me a good vacation breakfast. And a bloody mary of course, cause hello, i'm leshaface
Yep I think we both have a problem, that being there just isn't enough vacation drinks to go around ; )

I did work at Sbux for 7 years after all.
I had no idea we had a barista in our mist. Was the emphasis on the "bar" portion of ista?

Enjoying your TR! Wow, how many days in the MK so far? Sounds fun! Gonna gave to try to Sleepy Hallow waffle sandwiches and am seriously considering adding Kona breakfast.
Glad you're enjoying. I think this is something like MK day #4. Whatever it was, it was clearly too many and thankfully this was our last MK excursion.

Definitely add Sleepy Hollow and Kona to your list. They are both delicioso!

I was waiting for someone to call me out on my math ; ) We are movement oriented people, so as long as we were headed somewhere vice standing and waiting it worked to our benefit. It's like traffic. I'd rather drive for an hour than sit for traffic in an hour ; )

I'm sure they let people share the Big Kahuna, but Jason clearly needed no help.

And it isn't even real grass. :upsidedow We saw Wishes from that fp area and the artificial grass was a good idea. It drains fast. ;)
I think my blond highlights go to my brain somedays as I didn't know it wasn't real ; ) Clearly it can't be, but I didn't even think about it. Guess I needed a good lay down on it to know for sure ; )

Great reviews. Can't believe I cancelled Kona last trip it looks fab for breakfast. Your dd is a real sweetie :)
Blasphemy!!! You cancelled Kona. So sad ; (

Thanks for the Casey compliment. We of course think she is pretty darn perfect, but I may be slightly biased

Princesses and Poopers and Popcorn, Oh My!
This update will be a little light on food, but heavy on Princesses and Poopers (explanation coming) and of course Casey if you're into that kind of thing ; )

We last left off with bellies full from Kona and my husband taking a quick nap on what I now know is hub turf (thanks @woodnymph). From there we took a quick whirl through the land of small children singing a song whose name I can never remember, before a fastpass for Peter Pan (in which Casey left her Anna/Elsa doll that we were thankfully able to recover), and then two back to back trips through Donald's world of Philharmagic, which despite seeing before Casey suddenly loved and insisted we do twice.

Then it was time for our Enchanted Tales with Belle fastpass. Casey had been waiting for this all day because she just knew she'd get picked to do something. We of course were a little more dubious as she can be a little shy sometimes and not want to volunteer, but sure enough her jumping skills garnered her the coveted role of.....

MRS. POTTS. In case it isn't evident from the picture she was beside herself with pride and had this smile plastered on her face the entire time.

After the requisite picture with our hostess, Belle

We proceeded to hear, "see I told you I was going to get a part" for the remainder of the day. Hmm, gloating about being right? Don't think she took that page from her Mama's book at all ; )

Our Polynesian bellies were becoming a little less full, but not ready for a meal we elected to embark on a family tradition: Pretzels on the Pooper ; ) Clearly this needs a little explanation, but on our first trip to the world w/Casey we tried the Cream Cheese Pretzel from the lunching pad and elected to eat it on the People Mover. Casey apparently misunderstood when we said People Mover and she thought it was called the Pooper. Not wanting to correct this clearly superior naming conventional (a la Ep-A-Cot), Pretzels on the Pooper was born.

If you haven't tried the pooper or the pretzel I highly recommend both ; ) Seriously the cream cheese pretzel is one of our favorite disney snacks as it is coated with butter and cinnamon on the outside and inside the oh so soft pretzel is a delicious layer of sweet cream cheese. It is delicious and tastes even better when whirling through Tomorrowland.

While on the pooper I'd spied one of the face painting stations so I took a page out of the @Elavationist book and off we went. Not surprisingly she picked the frozen themed face paint, but thankfully it wasn't as over the top frozen as some other things since I'm officially over that Aerendale crew (especially since they decided to shack up in my beloved Maelstrom). But I digress. Here is the face paint in progress...

And the finished product...

Not surprisingly she was completely enamored with herself.

Before we left MK for our new resort we had one last fast pass for the Festival of Fantasy parade. Being the bad Mommy that I am, we had never seen a Disney parade before. The 3 of us don't do well to sit and wait for things and the prospect of popping a squat on a curb for an hour to wait for a parade just wasn't gonna happen. So the fast pass was right up our alley. We arrived about 10 minutes before showtime and Casey (and Anna/Elsa) was able to secure this prime spot of real estate.

As we bided our time the bellies were rumbling again and my nose quickly led me to the popcorn cart. I'd asked for a small cup to give Casey (aka the popcorn hog) some of her own and the cast member was nice enough to just fill up a separate cup for her at no charge.

It was just as buttery and salty as the batch a few days earlier and hit the proverbial spot.

The parade soon started and to say Casey was in pure heaven is an understatement. With each passing float and parade performers her excitement swelled and just seeing the pure exuberance on her face brought a little tear to this cynical Mama's eye. The piece de resistance was when Anna and Elsa came by and saw not only Casey but her (their) doll. They kept pointing to the doll and each other and then made heart signs at Casey, it was truly a magical disney moment. Jason was snapping pictures and oblivious that they were actually interacting with Casey when he shot this one.

But did get this reaction from Casey as they left

So it worked. Festival of fantasy melted my grinch parade heart. We will undoubtedly never miss it again and will be sure to add the electric parade to our repertoire as well.

Up next, some animal watching and the best disney meal EVER!!!!!!

I guess I'm a bad mamma too lol because I don't tend to make time for parades. We are always too busy trying to get on the next ride. But you are so right - seeing the look on your kids' faces makes it worth the sitting and waiting. After taking DD to MSEP for the first time on our visit in March, I do plan to try to sit still for at least one parade on our next trip lol. That cream cheese pretzel sounds fantastic...I'm glad you described it so well. Before I had heard people talk about it, but I just thought it was a plain pretzel with regular cream cheese inside because "cream cheese pretzel" but I had no idea it was also cinnamon and sweet cream cheese...now I might have to try one. I didn't know you could take food on the "pooper" or do you have to kinda be under the radar about it? Don't worry, I won't tell..it does seem like a relaxing place to enjoy a snack!! I love your DD's face paint too!

The Anna, Elsa, Casey interaction was just precious! I'm so glad that parade was magical for all of you!

Peter Pan (in which Casey left her Anna/Elsa doll that we were thankfully able to recover)

How lucky you were able to get it back. It seems like it would be impossible at a place the size of Disney.

In case it isn't evident from the picture she was beside herself with pride and had this smile plastered on her face the entire time.

Great pic, she looks so happy.

If you haven't tried the pooper or the pretzel I highly recommend both ; )

We love the pooper and I wish we'd thought to bring those tasty sounding pretzels with us.

I know that feeling well. :) Casey looks so happy. :goodvibes

I can't wait to hear about it!

Ooohhhhhh cannot wait to hear where you head next!!

I haven't had the cream cheese pretzel but I definitely need to add that of my list of things to try.

I love the face paint and the pictures- seriously so cute! I'm glad she enjoyed her part as Mrs Potts, she looks so proud lol.

I am obsessed with that parade. I agree, I can't wait for an hour for a front row spot. I wasn't too keen on waiting around for it but I'm so glad I did, it's fantastic!

That really sounds like a truly magical parade experience!

That pretzel looks delicious, I can't believe I have never tried one before.

Pretzels on the Pooper made me laugh out loud! And Casey's face watching the parade is priceless! Thanks for sharing.

Okay, first of all...I really should know better than to sit down and do some major catching up on your report while hungry.......

I have a confession to make. I made an ADR. Not that day or even the night before, I made one a couple of weeks before our trip. I know, I know I did something completely out of character and unspontaneous and for that I am not proud. But I knew while we were staying at Wilderness Lodge we'd want to take advantage of our location, so California Grill was a must do. I'm happy to report it wasn't that bad and we all survived and in even more of a confession, I have an ADR booked for our September trip already. #WhoAmI?

Meanwhile... if I made all ADRs but ONE for a trip, I'd be wondering #WhoAmI? :rotfl:
Although I have to admit, I'm jealous of the amount of flexibility you have in making decisions for where you want to eat/which park to visit. Perhaps if our next trip is during an off-peak time I'd be willing to try some spontaneity! ;)

I'm happy to report though that I had a lovely view from the window inside and Casey and Jason thoroughly enjoyed a fireworks show and balcony all to themselves.

This view is incredible!

Casey picked out an Olaf cake pop since we figured it was nutritious given his nose was a carrot.

Absolutely sound reasoning.

So what else to do in Storybook Circus, then meet a human sized rodent and ride through the sky on a miniature flying elephant.

Well when you put it like that.... :rotfl2:

Oh my gosh this looks SO amazing right now!!! (I also couldn't help but think about the severe heartburn this would cause me right now in my 38-weeks-pregnant-and-about-to-pop state. Good thing it's 1,100 miles away and out of reach :sad2:)

This, however, would not cause me any pain and I want it right now!!! I wish I knew of a place around here where I could get something like it... Maybe some research is in order.

I'd like to eat this too, please and thank you.

Yay! Hub turf! I can't wait to see this in person! I'm having a hard time really envisioning what the area looks like now, even after seeing pictures. Does it feel very different?

and then two back to back trips through Donald's world of Philharmagic, which despite seeing before Casey suddenly loved and insisted we do twice.

Atta girl! I'm right there with her!

MRS. POTTS. In case it isn't evident from the picture she was beside herself with pride and had this smile plastered on her face the entire time.

This is amazing! :goodvibes Love the magic here.

Oh my gosh I love everything about this! I really want to try that pretzel (like, right now) and I give five very enthusiastic thumbs up to the people mover...uh I mean the Pooper! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I melted into a puddle reading this. We aren't parade people right now but I suppose this is my future when we bring our little girl to Disney... :goodvibes

I can't wait to see where you're staying next! And I'll eat something before I read your next update

We ignore all parades, hopping on rides that tend to have shorter wait times during parades instead. I'm not sure I should let me kids know what exactly they are missing or not.

We can be in the bad mama club together ; ) Casey's reaction was definitely priceless, but I think we'll stick to once a trip and going the fast pass route again.

Definitely try the pretzel. It's more like an auntie anne's cinnamon pretzel meets cheesecake filling. So yummy in my tummy.

Food is definitely not welcomed on the pooper. We may have been known to bring a backpack with us holding said illegal pretzel. Shhh don't tell anyone though. I think I'm very inconspiculous

The Anna, Elsa, Casey interaction was just precious! I'm so glad that parade was magical for all of you!
It was definitely one of those magic disney moments you only think come in commercials.

Ooohhhhhh cannot wait to hear where you head next!!

Next was not a new place for us, but they totally upped their already high game.

I'll be sure to tell Casey Princess Ashley liked her face paint ; ) She was definitely proud of it and her turn at Mrs. Potts, not that she ever locks for self confidence. Girl loves herself a mirror

Agree on the parade. I'm sure it will become a once a trip thing in the future, provided of course I can score a fast pass. Still too impatient to wait ; )

How lucky you were able to get it back. It seems like it would be impossible at a place the size of Disney.
We definitely lucked out on that one, or I'd be shelling out another $25 bucks for another one. We realized she left it right away and thankfully a very nice cast member had set it aside. If I hadn't come back with it I'm sure Casey would have tried to freeze me or something ; )

We love the pooper and I wish we'd thought to bring those tasty sounding pretzels with us.
Pooper and pretzels, ya gotta try it. All the cool kids are doing it.

I know that feeling well. :) Casey looks so happy. :goodvibes
Happy doesn't even begin to describe it, made the whole trip.

That really sounds like a truly magical parade experience!

That pretzel looks delicious, I can't believe I have never tried one before.
Magic was certainly in the air that day.

Pretzels on the Pooper made me laugh out loud! And Casey's face watching the parade is priceless! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I'm wondering how old Casey will actually be before she realizes it isn't called the pooper. I'm thinking I can milk it until she is 15 or so :P
