A Question for the Mods

I don't know if this is an acceptable topic but I thought I would post it and hope for the best. For those that weren't on the board yesterday, Monday Feb. 19, there was a thread listing electronics for sale. Not withstanding that such threads/posts aren't allowed, the OP was possibly running a scam site as it was their first post and it held many spelling and grammar errors. So my question - why was the thread able to stay up for close to the entire day?

I'm not a mod (nor do I play one on TV) but my educated guess would be that they have bigger 'fish to fry' so to speak on a regular basis around here instead of some harmless spammer. :)

Plus, it was on the Canadian board. Generally speaking, we are a quiet bunch and therefore they don't bother babysitting us as often as other forums. ;)

Well I can agree with the quiet bunch statement but don't ever consider them harmless spammers. This person obviously set up a fishing expedition to try and get contact outside of the boards and that is very close to no longer being harmless. I do know that the mods are often quick to intercede in name calling, baiting, argumentative debates, etc. When you think of it though, no real damage should come of those whereas that spammer could cause real financial damage.

The same spammer has appeared on our quiet neighbourhood board a couple of times.

One note... many of the mods may have been otherwise occupied yesterday due to the President's Day vacation. :surfweb:

You mean the mod of the Cdn. board isn't Canadian? I'm outraged! Let's have a vote! Is this the senate(Canadian inside joke)? Or maybe the mod was celebrating Family Day.

Maybe the mod was having a "barfing kid" day like me!!!

Didn't know that BKD was a statutory holiday. Here in Alberta FD is.

Sounds like you are unaware of *real* problems that go on here outside of 'name calling'. ;)

Um, no. :)

In my personal opinion, any email/discussion board user should know darn well that the 'spamming post' was a bunch of you-know-what. If not, I suggest that they step away from their computer because I saw that post and they are a dime a dozen on the world wide web.

The sad reality is that thousands of people are taken in by internet scams every day. If you want to read some very sad stories, visit the ebay community board. So yes, I do see a great danger in the spamming post and I believe so does the Dis, otherwise they would be allowed. I don't spend very much time on the community board here so I don't often see the 'underbelly' ;) of the Dis.

The mods do their best.. but this site is growing like a freaking weed!

Several of us reported the post and I'm sure the first mod that saw the report deleted the thread. There were several posts in the thread indicating it should be deleted and it looked like a scam.. and if that's not enough to 'warn' you that you shouldn't respond.. I dunno what is.

Sometimes.. stuff happens. The mods have lives. And yesterday WAS a holiday. :)

I would love to see a mod from this board for this board to be honest.. It just saves some issues from flaring up but it is true that we really don't have tons of issues that need to be monitored, but I would still love to see a Canadian mod for this Canadian board.

We do not have a Moderators assigned to the Canadian Boards at this point and time! Unfortunately, those that were have had to move on due to Family Obligations!

Hope all is well with them.

Plus Monday was President's Day, and if a person couldn't figure out that this was a harmful thread........................;)

Amen. The moderators do an excellent job monitoring all the traffic on the boards. They cannot be expected to be on guard 24/7, after all they are volunteers and members like the rest of us.

If the mods never closed that Why we hate Americans thread that was posted a few months ago, why would they close some post about electronics for sale despite the OP's concerns.

Going back to my 1st comment. Maybe the Why we hate Americans thread was not closed since they never closed the Why I hate Canada thread in the Community Board, so I guess they let us have our turn to to rant or something.

There is an icon in the bottom of the poster section in a post (triangle with a line) that can be used to report a "bad post" to the moderators.

Did any of the posters in this thread bother to report the spam post?

If the post is bad enough for you to start this thread then it was bad enough for you to report it.

Ah, yeah. MORE than one.

It's just part of being on the internet....sad to say you have to take the bad with the good.;)

I do know we used to have a Canadian mod here (snowwark) but she has since left.:sad2:

It's also nice to know that we Canucks really have a nice time here without any "hoopla" going on!lol

how do we get mods? Do they get asked or do they volunteer?
Wondering if there is nominations and voting or the Dis team chooses.. just curious of the process.

You know, I have PM'ed a few mods on the DIS - about getting a sticky here too about passport regulations and I did this awhile back because it seemed we had the daily "do we need a passport question" and no one ever replied and according to my PM history, none even bothered to read it.

mbb - aren't you a mod on the restaurants or off-site section? wanna police us too? We're a bad bunch!

Um, yes... quite a few. Did you read the other posts before you posted this?

Lewis:

You and I must have crossposted.. Just a few posts up from yours.. I noted that *I* had indeed reported the thread .. and several other people posted IN the thread they had reported it.

There was a delay in a mod deleting it. That was unfortunate. But it was an American Holiday and at this time this board doesn't have a Canadian mod.
