A question for or UK DISers.

I would like to know this also. I thought Boxing Day was always the day after Christmas. Isn't it always December 26? Or as they say in the UK, 26 December?:D

Hiya,

You had me intrigued and then there was no question!! LOL, I'm kinda starting to guess what it might have been from Micca's response but I'm sure it wasn't stupid :)

If there is something you want to know, ask away and I'll try and help, or PM me if you'd rather!

Cya,
Gaspode

Yup, a quick check of the definition of Boxing day (which I should have done BEFORE I posted the question (LOL)) reveals that it is the day after Christmas, or December 26. This makes it the same day of the year every year, thus making my question very silly indeed.

Thanks, Gaspode (cool name BTW, I am very fond of talking dogs). The question was, on what day of the year did boxing day fall in 2002? Sort of like asking on what day July 4th fell last year (LOL).

Hiya,

Fair enough (I say to your question!) :)

Main reason I'm replying is to say a big *yay* for finding someone on here who knows the story behind my username :) So... another PTerry fan then?

Take care,
Gaspode

Yup, I've read a goodly number of the Diskworld books. I prefer the ones that feature Commander Vimes or the witches, but I'm not so fond on the books which center on the wizards (with the possible exception of the librarian, who is one of my favorite characters). I also really enjoyed Good Omens.

I got to meet Mr Pratchett a few years ago at a sci-fi convention. He was very nice and a lot of fun to talk to. Unfotunately the conversation ended abrubtly when I told him that Good Omens was my favorite book of his. Apparently, working with Niel Gaiman did not sit well with him.

Hey again :)

That's really interesting what you said about Good Omens... it's my favourite too!!! I adore Discworld though (esp, as you might guess, Moving Pictures)... as well as being a Gaspode fan I'm a big 'witches' fan so my second fav DW would have to be Witches Abroad...

I've had the fortune to meet PTerry 3 times now. Twice @ book signings so not much time to talk and 1 I went to a lecture by him on his work - very very interesting but no mention of not enjoying working with NG - Hmm... v interesting!

Anyways, perhaps if you wanna chat DW any time (I've been reading them since I was 10 so always happy to chat DW!) then PM me please and I'll let you know my email address.

BTW, as you are a fan of the Watch/Vimes have you read 'Nightwatch'? It is truly excellent!!

Hey, I know the story behind your username GP......after you told me, LOL. :p

Nightwatch is sitting on my nightstand, waiting to be read. The Vimes books seem to be getting better and better, so I am really looking forward to it.

I too loved Moving Pictures, but I thought Gaspode really shone in The Fifth Elephant. That was a wonderful book.

I am curious, did you read Small Gods? At first, I didn't think I was going to like it, but it really grew on me towards the end.

Hey...

I don't think there is a DW book I haven't read.... so yes, I've read Small Gods, several times, I really like it :)

I have to admit to giving up on reading 'Interesting Times' about half way through... which most of my PTerry-fan friends think really strange as they all seem to love it! At the time I just grew bored of it... but now it is several years later and perhaps I ought to give it another go?

Also, I have yet to read (I think it is called) The Last Hero? The really large, beautifully illustrated one? I got it for DBF for Xmas and had it signed by the man himself but it is such a large book it is difficult to get round to reading it!

Oooh! I love Masquerade too btw, don't know why I felt the need to say that but I did :)

Cya,
Gaspode

Masquerade was the opera based witches story where he parodys Phantom of the Opera , right? I really enjoyed that one, though I found it a bit sad for some reason.

I have not yet read Interesting Times. Its pretty low on my list since I dont find Rincewind a very interesting character. I barely made it through The Last Continent.

The only Disc world book I have attempted to read (I still have several to get to) which I was unable to finish was Soul Music. The jokes just didn't seem to work for me and a little bit of Knobby goes a long way.

Back to the original question....I think if people at WDW can ask "What time is the 3 'o clock parade?", that the Boxing Day question is perfectly legit.;)

So you now know when it is but do you know why it is called "Boxing Day"? For those who don't, here is the answer:

The day after Christmas Day is known as Boxing Day, after the tradition of opening the alms boxes placed in churches
over the Christmas season. The contents were distributed amongst the poor of the parish. December 26 is also known
as the Feast of St Stephen. It is often a day of outdoor sports and horse racing and hunting. Only in the last century
however has it become a holiday. By having Christmas Day and Boxing Day as holidays this allowed many people to
take trips but also rejoin family members, which may have encouraged the tradition of families getting together at
Christmas time.
