Ok folks, this week is Volunteer Appreciation Week and I'm inspired to see if I could put together a DIS meet with a difference. I work for a New York City based non-profit that provides day treatment services, vocational training, residential programming and more, to homeless men and women.
We start from the very begging, with a very direct approach, through a homeless assistance helpline, outreach in the community, a 24 hour drop in center, rehab, emergency, transitional and permanent housing in various forms from community residences, single room occupancies and scattered site apartments. Taking a clinical and holistic approach, we provide the tools for our clients with the intent that they will help themselves through self care and motivation.
I happen to manage the volunteer program for the organization and am constantly creating group projects with interested folks, whether a group of friends, colleagues from corporations, college students and more. We are constantly refurbishing our shelters and the drop in center, scrubbing, painting, etc... It'd be GREAT if I could get 7-10 fellow DIS'ers who want to help out together. It'd be a fun opportunity to meet each other of course, but why not do so while making a difference? I know we could paint a facility common room or something along those lines. The need is constant.
So if you might be interested, let me know. Send me a PM and I can send you a link to our organization for more info. We could do some good work for three hours on a Saturday or Sunday and those that are game could then go out afterwards for lunch, an early dinner or just cockstails or something.
Let's meet and make a difference!
Do I sound like a cheerleader or what?!
Thanks to Pete and the WebMasters for letting me post this!
