This afternoon I had an interesting experience on VMK, and I'll take a few minutes to share it (it will make my feel better
). It started yesterday when I played a game in VMK_Annie's room, and I won! I really stink at games, so it was quite a miracle, to say the least. Trades were not working in her room yesterday, so she was telling each winner that she would catch up with them later to award the prize. I went away quite pleased with myself, to say the least! I was not on much for the rest of the day, but for the few minutes that I was on, I noticed that trade did not seem to be working anywhere. I did not see VMK_Annie anymore yesterday.
Let me just say here that I have fun on VMK, especially meeting with my kids and now my sister in this unique and very cute way. Several people that I love very much live outside my state, and so that doubles the fun...getting to 'see' each other. I have also enjoyed making some new friends, especially several other moms from here on the DIS board. But, I don't take the game quite as seriously as some. I have been known to give my 'things' away quite freely and make trades that were not in my best interest, just because something seemed so important to someone else. After all, these things, though fun, are really virtual, aren't they?
Well, I never heard met up with VMK_Annie, but when I signed on this afternoon, I noticed that she was running her game room again, so I got in line and played. Today I lost quickly (see, I told you I am terrible at games!), and I thought to mention yesterday's game to Annie then, but she was very busy, so I just quickly exited and then watched for her game to close down, thinking that I might catch a moment with her when she was through.
When I saw that she was no longer running the game and it was down graded to two Mickey-heads, I went back to her room and stood at the door. I politely introduced myself and told her that I had won her game on the previous day when trade was not working. But before Annie could answer, a community leader who had been in the room earlier but was now standing in the outside 'lobby' area of the room, replied. She said that prizes are always awarded at the end of each game. Then she (the CL) said that I should leave and stop trying to pull a fast one (or get away with something...or words to that affect). I was dumbfounded! I responded by saying that I was not trying to pull anything over on anyone, and that was a mean thing to say. VMK_Annie then responded that I had received my prize last night. I asked, 'I received it without a trade?', but I did not get an answer...was just told to clear the area (kids were still trying to get in the play the game).
When I got to my own room, I checked my chair, and sure enough, I did have a second toucan pin. It would have been quite a long time before I would have discovered this on my own. I did not know that staff could put something into your inventory without you being present for a trade, or even signed on. I had not received a message in my box, so this was news to me!
I've said all that to say that I am so glad that this happened to me instead of some child! I was accused of trying to scam staff by a CL! I know that many of the children (and probably some of the adults) are self centered and obnoxious, and can be very annoying. But that is not every child, and I refuse to believe that it is even the norm! Many are sweet and kind and are just trying to have fun and make friends. I know many children who would be in tears after such an exchange. This CL is an adult and she is a frequent poster here on the DIS.
I'm sorry this has become so long. I just wanted to be the voice of reason and to remind the CLs and all of the adults on VMK to have a little more patience with others, and not to be short or accusatory towards someone without reason. We can have a very positive influence on the children that we interact with in VMK, and I'd hope that we'd all want to be kind and put others first and set the example. That responsibility falls the fullest on those with a title in front of your name, because my children, and I know others as well, are taught to respect those in authority. Harsh works can hurt a child more than you would ever think, especially being falsely accused.
I have been a teacher for nearly thirty years, have five children, and am a Pastor's wife. I don't mean to have gotten on a soapbox, but this is a sensitive subject for me. I've worked with and loved thousands of children in my day (and some have been very rotten, I must say!), and I just felt that I needed to speak for them. They often are lonely and feel unloved...find one on VMK and be nice to him or her!
No flames, please! And yes, I leave tomorrow!
