A new kind of solicitor came to my house last night

Last night at about 8:30 this woman and her brother (so she says) stopped at my house to try and sell her oil paintings. Has anyone ever encountered this? It was totally new for me. My husband answered the door but I should have because she was RELENTLESS and would not leave! I am pregnant and don't have a lot of patience with this type so I would have gotten rid of her sooner. My husband told her no on several occasions and she just would not get it.

I asked my husband if he asked her to see her solicitors license but he said he never thought about it. It was a crazy night at home and he just did not think of it. Normally I don't really care if people come to the house to sell things. I mean, it is a job for them and they are just trying to make a living. But this woman, I should have called the cops on. Here is why:

She was Arabic and the only reason I tell you that is because this is how the end of the conversation went according to my DH.

Her: I see you don't have a lot of pictures on your walls, you really need some. ( I do wonder how she knows this because you cannot really see in my home from the front door)

DH: We just moved so I have not had a chance to hang anything up yet, we are still unpacking.

Her: Do you drink wine? I have lots of pictures of wine that would be perfect in your house, let me come in and show you.

DH: No, we don't drink wine.

Her: Are you like all the other American's and you drink beer?

DH: Yes, I drink beer.

Her: I should kill you. Ha Ha.

That is where DH ended the conversation, said that he needed to get some things done, we were very busy and basically shut the door on her.

Who goes to someone's house and tells them that they should kill them? Seriously? And being Arabic and making a reference to "all the other American's" then telling one you should kill them is just not cool at all.

I did not know anything of this until after I had finished bath with my son and she was long gone. If I had known sooner, I would have called the cops.

Now I sit here mad that I did not call the cops on her.

Anyone ever have this kind of encounter?

Pretty strange. We don't answer the door for people we don't know. That's why we have a security view in the door. ;)

Oh, goodness!

We have a sign right above our doorbell that says "NO SOLICITING!" and when you enter our sub-division, there is a big sign that says "NO SOLICITING!"

Once, we got someone trying to sell us stuff and my dad opened the door, said "what does that sign say?" they looked over at it again and he shut the door in their face.

Don't try to sell us something when there is a sign and when it is 9 at night and people are trying to sleep.

I usually don’t answer the door if I don’t recognize the person. But on the rare occasion that I do, I ask them for their solicitation permit. They never have one. I then say I am calling to report them. They leave.

I would do the sign thing but I don't want to discourge kids from coming to my house or certain other people. Like we had someone come around selling ribbons to put on our trees because a family in the neighborhood just lost a son to cancer. I would not want them to feel like they could not stop.

We welcome girl scouts selling cookies, other than that we do not open the door.

What if it was Arab girl scouts?

Frankly, I am getting tired of having some salesman threaten to kill me at the end of his sales pitch if I do not buy a new roof, have my yard mowed, windows replaced, lightning rods installed, etc.

All kids with cookies are welcome :goodvibes

I'd still call the cops. That way they could be on the look out for her. That is just too bizarre.

A few years ago, a college kid came to the house selling paintings. We bought one.

Actually, selling things like paintings, vases, small tables, etc., is not unusual in many European countries and Asia. I do not know about the Middle East.

It used to be normal here, years ago. I am old enough to remember various types of salesmen coming by the house.

Remember the Music Man and the travelling salesman who sold anvils?

but did he threaten to kill you?? That's what gets me.
When she laughed after saying it, it would have clued me into the fact that it was a joke that fell flat.

Just because she was apparently from the middle east, does not mean that she is going to harm anyone.

That is really strange. It's one thing selling paintings, but it's another thing when they want to come in the house and show you the paintings, and it's definitely another thing when they say they should kill you. :scared1: Even if it was a joke. It isn't funny.

I'd be concerned about it based on the part of the conversation where she says "you don't have many pictures". How does she know? It almost seems like perhaps they were "casing" your house????

Hindsight is always 20/20, I know, but if I had an encounter like that with a door to door salesperson, I think I'd have called the non-emergency police # and spoken to someone about it.

That is kind of what I thought. You don't joke to someone about killing them. Especially when you are at their house trying to sell something. It is like threatening them if they don't buy something.

I agree with Disney Doll. At least make a report about it in case there are other reports in and around your neighborhood. If the police get enough reports, they will step up patrols in your area and perhaps stop the couple for questioning if they see them.

Though if the salesperson is bearing cookies, he or she can pretty much threaten me all they want.
