A wonderful first vacation for a new family! May 16 26, 2003
Meet the family:
Kristy Wife and new mom, 5th trip (2nd as an adult)
John Husband and new dad (2nd trip)
Luke 7, soon to be adopted (1st trip)
Joshua 2 (almost 3), soon to be adopted (1st trip)
Confused? Well, after almost 3 yrs of infertility, we are finally parents. The boys (biological brothers) have been part of our family for 5 months, even though it feels as though they have been with us forever! They are still legally foster children until the adoption is final in a few months, but we claim them!
This trip was planned and cancelled several times, so Im still a little in shock that we actually went. We had cancelled the trip due to lack of funds, and hadnt given it much thought. Then about a month before we had hoped to go, some miracle money arrived and the trip was on! From there everything fell into the place. The day before we left, the final issues with the birth mother were settled and everything is set for the adoption. This really was a trip of celebration!
Day 1 Friday, May 16 The drive to Florida
We awoke not so bright and early on Friday morning and got ready to head out. We live in North Central Texas, so we had quite a long day ahead of us. The car was packed and ready to go, and a quick check of The Weather Channel showed thunderstorms heading in, so we hurried up and headed out! A few drops on the windshield, then we were ahead of it. The rest of the day was clear and beautiful.
We ended up having to make several stops throughout the morning. At one of them, we discovered that the waterspout on the cooler had come open and everything in the back of the car was wet! Thank goodness we packed our clothes in Ziplock Baggies! We cleaned up the mess and pushed on, keeping our eyes peeled for a branch of our bank. I had gone to the local branch the day before to get travelers checks and they didnt have any!!!! I couldnt believe it, banks are supposed to have travelers checks! Before too long we found one, and yes, they had some. Finally with money in hand, we could get some miles behind us.
The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. We got stuck in a good bit of construction traffic coming through LA on I-10 that slowed us down, so we werent making very good time. We stopped for lunch at a McDonalds and followed the advice to let the kids play while we ate and then feed them in the car. It worked great and was a nice break for us all. We decided to just drive through for supper because it was getting pretty late. We finally made it to our hotel, a Holiday Inn Express in Marianna, FL around 11:30. It was nice and clean, so we all crawled into bed and crashed. Tomorrow, we will finally arrive at WDW!
