A Mother's Day Cruise on the Fantasy sandwiched between BCV (Complete 10/12, p.33)

I love the catchup summary at the start! :-) Oh I love Palo! Sorry your main dishes weren't exciting. The fish is amazing! Jo had that dessert too and loved it as sell. The first one.

Mom still had a fabulous meal so all was good. I'm just not going to try to like the gnocchi. I'll either get the fish or ask for something special made.

Lol re the Jamaican CM being appalled. We had the same once when we didn't get off at Nassau. But like you we had a great day on the ship!

Later we found out people were seen peeing on the side of the road. Our day was perfect on board, and we're not planning on getting off next year either.

The muppets game looks fun and I just adore the double rainbow :-) How fab that must have looked.

The rainbow was gorgeous, very special.

Sorry about Conner's eye.

Thank you my friend

The kiwi tartlet looks amazing, I'm sorry it disappointed. Hate that! Your cute mom's brownie looks amazing!

That rainbow on the water is incredible. Great shot! :cloud9: I love rainbows.

I'm sorry Palo wasn't up to snuff. Gnocchi is so difficult to prepare as is risotto. I'm a risotto snob. :rotfl:

The rainbow photos are beautiful. What a shame that Palo was a bit of a mixed bag. I agree with your mom though, that polenta appetizer is gorgeous. I would happily have this for appetizer, entree and dessert.

Corinna

No way re using the road as a WC! Oh yes you really missed out there Pam!

Our standard response for folks that look offended we have missed their local country yet appear to live far away by choice from this Paradise is to say 'if it's so amazing why are you here..' But if they are a CM I might refrain. Probably having to work out of necessity and lack of local employment.

I have never been a big fan of Gnocchi myself. It sits in the middle and can never decide in my mouth... are you potato..or pasta. Identify yourself or I'll shoot lol..

Same as Polenta. Give me pasta or pizza as my carbo any day in Italian restaurant. Italians should stick to their fabulous breads and pasta :-)

The kiwi thing could have been so much better! like with a condensed milk tart filing! and a flaky sugar crust. The filling was a not sweet vanilla and the crust was too hard. Now that brownie was awesome, very very delicious! popcorn::

Thank you :) I couldn't believe our luck with a double rainbow, it was sooooo beautiful!

Mostly it was fabulous as usual. I think moms salad needed some balsamic, and I just don't need to get the gnocchi again. But the starters and calamari were fabulous, and mom enjoyed her favorites.

She ooooo's and ahhhhhs over that polenta! Savoring every morsel.

I must get another entree is all, I've had two fish dishes that rate up there as best I've ever had. For some reason I wasn't in a fish mood but next time I won't make that mistake.

I'm sure there are parts of Jamaica that are worth visiting but on the first visit from a new cruise ship maybe they should have put out a no peeing memo...

:lmao:

The gnocchi at Remy were beyond amazing, so delicious. So of course I was comparing these to those. A different recipe I'm sure because both are made fresh from scratch every day.

Day 7: At Sea

I must have needed sleep this morning because I didn’t wake up until they made an overhead announcement right before 10:00 that they were practicing emergency drills. Why oh why would they make an announcement inside the cabins on a sea day? Granted most people were probably up at 10:00 but this was not a pleasant way to start my day. Mom had been reading since 8:30.

I really wanted to be hungry enough for lunch today, I missed the steak fries and mac and cheese. All the other days I had eaten such a big breakfast I wasn’t hungry for lunch before Cabanas closed. So today I decided to skip breakfast and wait until they opened lunch. Mom really enjoys the breakfast so I offered to go with her to breakfast and I’d wait for lunch. No no no she said, she’d go for lunch too.

While getting ready we talked about next year’s vacation. I suddenly realized we had no plans for when we’d cruise on the Fantasy again. This realization struck home because we both really enjoy the Fantasy. We had been planning on Aulani in September 2015 and also a 5 day cruise with friends in May 2015. As we talked mom confessed that September really wouldn’t be good for her next year due to a huge conference for work. Could we postpone Aulani, again, to 2016 and maybe add a Fantasy cruise before or after the one we already had planned? Sounded good to me, 2016 will also be mom’s big birthday so we will combine a birthday and Mother’s Day celebration for a two week trip to Aulani in May 2016. Those are the plans as of now, but two years in a row Aulani has been postponed, so we’ll see what happens. It’s mom’s big birthday, she can change destinations as many times as she wants. This also meant we needed to stop by the future cruise desk and see what we could book for the Fantasy May 2015.

Off to brunch at Cabanas

My plates

Mom’s plates

Brunch was SCRUMPTIOUS! It is so hard to decide, breakfast or lunch, maybe every other day I need to do one and then the other. There’s just not enough room to have both in the time frame that Cabanas is open. I think lunch closes at 2:30 and then the only option is Flo’s or room service.

While we were eating there was an announcement that Commodore Tom would be doing a signing in White Caps at 12:15. I definitely wanted to do that so we headed down there after eating. Mom saw the very delicious freshly made toffee pudding on the way out and wanted to come back for some. By all means, if you’re still hungry we will come back.

Next to the elevators

I was glad to find a line of people waiting for the Commodore. When I was on my Wonder cruise in March there was hardly anybody waiting. Eventually a line formed but I was a bit sad not more people were interested in meeting the person making sure we were traveling safely in the middle of the ocean.

I asked him to sign my journal. I think next time I might buy one of the Captain Mickey postcards and have one of those signed. Maybe.

Mom was still thinking about that toffee pudding so we headed back up to Cabanas.

Love the door handles at Animator’s Palate

This really is good, I was too full for a bowl but mom enjoyed every bite.

Then we went and lounged at Satellite Falls for about an hour. Cruise Director Ray made an announcement that there was a variety music/comedy show called Buckets n Boards starting at 2:00. In the past we’ve skipped the shows in the middle of the day but we’d had such fun with the shows so far this cruise we decided to give it a chance.

These guys were fabulous! And FUNNY! It was a really fun show, and I hope we see them on a future cruise.

They got a few kids from the audience to participate, and they were great.

They were squeaking these turtles making music, I wanted to see what they looked like.

If you see these guys on your cruise, please give them a chance, they’re great!

Then up to watch The Muppets on the Funnel Vision.

There was an emergency emptying of the family pool while we watched the movie. I didn’t see anything in the water but something must have happened. It took about an hour for them to empty it, clean it, and fill it up again.

Sea days are really the only time when you can tell there’s a couple thousand other people on the ship with you.

After the movie we lounged in the sun for a bit and then went down to see if we could book a cruise for next May. We had to wait a bit but we chatted with some CMs and looked at the brochure of available dates. We ended up picking the exact itinerary we were currently on, and almost booked the same cabin. At the last minute I asked mom if she maybe wanted to try one of the corner rooms, they’re even bigger than the one we were in this cruise. Sure! So we booked cabin 7006. It is HUGE! Very excited for that.

We stopped for dessert at some point

Then went up to try and play mini golf but it was super busy. We still wanted to cross something off our to-do list so we went in search of a shuffleboard court. There were some CMs cleaning one side of the Promenade deck so we went to the other side.

And while we were reading the directions the CMs came to our side and started roping things off so they could clean… they didn’t ask us to leave, but said we might get wet if we stayed. We didn’t want to be in their way so went to the other side again. Well they were still cleaning the other side! We would not be playing shuffleboard that day.

I love the way this looks with the chairs out

We decided to head up to the room. We passed the movie theater and noticed a popcorn bucket you could buy for $7.50 and get refills for $3.50 the rest of the cruise. We really should have gotten that at the beginning, something for next time. They had a sign up that there would be a showing of the Million Dollar Arm at 12:01 am that night. I had no idea it was premiering that weekend. Mom wanted to see it but we weren’t sure we could stay up that late. It would make sense that they’d be showing it the next day also.

Up in the room we found more presents!

We turned on Treasure Planet and relaxed. It had been showing on the Funnel Vision earlier but we missed it. Mom doesn’t think she ever saw it and I hadn’t seen it in ages. We didn’t quite finish it, dinner was approaching and we needed to get ready.

Dinner was in the Enchanted Garden that evening. We were anticipating two of our tablemates to be at Remy this evening but they decided to skip it. We were delighted to see them.

We both started off with a pear, corn, and jicama slaw salad. It was pretty good.

Mom also had mushroom soup which it looks like a missed a picture of. And I had a green salad with balsamic dressing.

For her entrée mom had the farrow stew with string beans which she said was pretty good.

And I had the fettucini without chicken. Our server forgot I don’t like onions or peppers so I picked them off. I had not had a server forget that before. It was a huge portion and not the best flavor.

The mom who had been sick several of the dinners was quite rude this evening. She had asked for butter with her baked potato and they forgot it. Instead of asking nicely for some she carried on and on about it. And there happened to be extra butter on the table from the bread service. It was at this time that I was glad she had not been to several dinners. I was not glad she was sick, but her attitude towards life was not a pleasant one.

For dessert mom had her favorite

And I had a banana foster sundae

After dinner we wanted to go play mini golf so we headed out but I got distracted by the fountain.

Mom wanted her picture, she’s so silly!

Up to mini golf but it closed at 10:00. I thought that was very strange, why would they close an activity that doesn’t require a CM? they took away all the clubs and balls so there was no way to play. We encountered another guest with his kids that was very irate about the fact. It’s usually by this time in the cruise people start getting grumpy. I’m not sure if it’s because they’re sad it’ll soon be over or for other reasons. Whatever the reason it’s unpleasant, vacation is not over and no reason to spoil it by being grouchy.

We stopped at the restrooms by Palo and Remy and mom had quite a strange encounter. Someone repeatedly tried to open her door even though she said it was occupied and the door wasn’t open. I happened to see this woman come out of the bathroom fling off her shoes and angrily say to her husband, everybody in there isn’t eating at these restaurants! How would she know where they were eating, and why would it matter? All the bathrooms on the ships are for everybody. I tell you, the grumps come out at the end of the cruise.

In the stairwell

Back down to the room where this marvelous creation awaited us

We had stopped in the Cove Café for some appetizers. Dinner had not been fully satisfying.

I ate the goodies while we finished Treasure Planet. Mom wasn’t hungry and that was fine with me. She did some packing while we watched the movie.

The next day we would be at Castaway Cay. We did not have any excursions booked, we just planned to swim and enjoy the beach.

It had been a very nice and low key day, very relaxing. And booking another cruise was the icing on the cake.

Buckets and Boards are hilarious! I saw them a couple of years ago...so funny!

Too bad about all the grumpy people.

They were so funny!!!! I'm glad we gave them a chance. Will definitely see them again if they're on the ship.

Instead of relishing the last couple days people get sour. Not pleasant.

Your cruise is coming up fast!!! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

I know! 20 more days until I leave for Puerto Rico! I have to completely rethink my FE gifts since I can't one of the items I needed. Hopefully I can get everything this weekend for my new idea. I started making my packing list and I need to start getting things together.

I'm debating a TR...I think I will do one. Hopefully I can get one started this weekend. I'm so excited I get to meet Cynthia!

You know we'd love to hear about your trip :)

Cynthia is so nice, you're going to have such fun! Did you link so you can sit together at dinner?

Bummer about your FE gifts, last minute figuring out is no fun.

Oh no, how is Connor doing?

Was the kiwi tart not very good, cus it looks good!

Wow great Rainbow pictures!

Too bad you weren't super happy about the dishes at Palo. Definitely next time do the fish plates!

Hmm, I have no idea who that couple is. The guy looks a little like Carroll O'Connell but he died a while back so that's definitely not him

I never considered doing brunch at Cabanas! Great idea.

Ah! I forgot about Bucket's N Boards! :yay: They were great!

I wonder if the popcorn served on the ship is the same popcorn as the parks? The parks have the best popcorn i've ever had! I would definitely buy that bucket and use it for movies and snacking.

Woah a definite group of grumps for sure! What the heck. I didn't know they came out that early. I always saw it the very last day leaving the ship, not 2 days before!

Sigh. That picture of Remy and Emile :cloud9: I love all Ratatouille pictures like this. I took a picture of one similar, Remy looking down into the kitchen I believe, and I love it!

Oh no, how is Connor doing?

The old guy turned 13 this year, I think his body is just winding down. The vet said there's nothing she can do, if it gets worse to bring him back in. He's not in any pain, it's just droopy. Some dogs go their whole lives with their eyes like this, but his came on suddenly. The vet said 50-90% of cases they never find out what happened. :(

Was the kiwi tart not very good, cus it looks good!

I think it was because I was expecting tart, and it was sweet/bland. And the crust was too thick.

Wow great Rainbow pictures!

Thanks :) they were soooo pretty!

Too bad you weren't super happy about the dishes at Palo. Definitely next time do the fish plates!

Most of it was great, I'm just figuring out which dishes not to I order again

Hmm, I have no idea who that couple is. The guy looks a little like Carroll O'Connell but he died a while back so that's definitely not him

Every single CM that passed stopped at their table. They were somebody, but who knows, they might just be very frequent cruisers. I'd love to find out.

It was scrumptious! popcorn::

Ah! I forgot about Bucket's N Boards! :yay: They were great!

I love that they've been doing DCL for a while! Makes me think maybe we'll get to see them again.

I wonder if the popcorn served on the ship is the same popcorn as the parks? The parks have the best popcorn i've ever had! I would definitely buy that bucket and use it for movies and snacking.

It was the same. We smelled it every single day all the way up the hall and up the steps. I'll be getting that bucket next time!

Woah a definite group of grumps for sure! What the heck. I didn't know they came out that early. I always saw it the very last day leaving the ship, not 2 days before!

Some grumps showed their faces early that's for sure. Made me sad for them.

Sigh. That picture of Remy and Emile :cloud9: I love all Ratatouille pictures like this. I took a picture of one similar, Remy looking down into the kitchen I believe, and I love it!

I remember :)

Great update Pam. It really is so frustrating I love breakfast and lunch too but can't manage both! Every other day is a great plan :-)

Well done on your future cruise and nice to score a corner cabin. We like those def bigger. Quite a few of the disabled ones are corners. How nice to meet the commodore. I would have raced for that too! Love the Captain signing.

Cool re The Muppets. My mind can imagine what they cleared from the pool. An over eager child eyes bigger than belly in Cabanas lol.

That is cool re refillable popcorn bucket I didn't know this! Def the first day score those!

Oh my re Mom and toilet invasion. What's wrong with people all the toilets are public like you say lol. I can just imagine 'oh darling some third class passenger is in my toilet'. What was she the Queen lol.

How intolerant re the butter. I would have just used the portion on the table wouldn't have thought anything of it at all! Tensions high! People not wanting to go home! Lol.

Nice photos of the ship. I don't know why but I do adore that seagull by Cabanas!

What a shame that Aulani had to be postponed by another year. I am getting so excited about my upcoming trip that I am not even sure I can wait until November. Well done on booking another cruise. What a shame that there were so many grumpy people around.

Corinna

Great update Pam. It really is so frustrating I love breakfast and lunch too but can't manage both! Every other day is a great plan :-)

There is just SO MUCH FOOD! I want to eat EVERYTHING! :rotfl: that just might become my plan, rotating, Cabanas has so many tasty treats.

Well done on your future cruise and nice to score a corner cabin. We like those def bigger. Quite a few of the disabled ones are corners.

I am super excited about the corner cabin, it seems almost twice as big as the one we had this cruise, and that one was huge.

How nice to meet the commodore. I would have raced for that too! Love the Captain signing.

I missed doing that on the first couple cruises but no more. I really like doing that.

Cool re The Muppets.

That was great fun.

My mind can imagine what they cleared from the pool. An over eager child eyes bigger than belly in Cabanas lol.

:faint: :crazy2:

That is cool re refillable popcorn bucket I didn't know this! Def the first day score those!

::yes:: I can't believe I missed it!

Oh my re Mom and toilet invasion. What's wrong with people all the toilets are public like you say lol. I can just imagine 'oh darling some third class passenger is in my toilet'. What was she the Queen lol.

Exactly! I think she had had too much to drink. I mean, if the door doesn't open the first few tries it's not going to...

How intolerant re the butter. I would have just used the portion on the table wouldn't have thought anything of it at all! Tensions high! People not wanting to go home! Lol.

I was secretly very glad she had missed so many dinners, and felt quite bad for her daughter. She criticized how much shopping the daughter did. Well, it was her birthday, she could treat herself if she wanted!

Nice photos of the ship. I don't know why but I do adore that seagull by Cabanas!

That's the guy from Finding Nemo, Nigle I think his name was. Love all the extra details everywhere!
