A Miser's Trip Report: Lots of Pics/Food Pics, 4/18/09 Western Magic: UPDATED 5/24

I love the food pictures, funny thing I had Eggs Julia at Palo in summer of 2008 because my name is Julia, so had to try it, I'm not really into that stuff at home, try new stuff on vacation and I have loved it ever since and the Chicken Parmesan, I had that at palo when I went the first week of my back-2-back cruise and loved that, I even had two:lmao:

:rotfl2: I got up that morning, ran the Jogging track, then had Palo Brunch at 11 a.m.!! How funny! We were literally so close and had no idea! :rotfl2:

Palo Brunch was awesome! Glad you guys had a good day!

Too funny! We were JUST to the right in your Palo pic. That was our server, Andrea, talking to us right behind you.

I agree...that Palo brunch was FABULOUS.

She was our server for our Thursday night dinner at Palo. She was wonderful and did the same thing - suggested things to eat and then brought them. I ended up with lobster tail and filet even though I only ordered the filet!

She told us she was going home on Saturday for her two month time off. I couldn't imagine being away from my family for six months at a time.

Ohhhh...this is one of my favorite things at Palo.

Can't wait for the next installment. :thumbsup2

I finally got DS's test results back today. He doesn't have swine flu but he does have another strain of influenza called Brisbane or H3. DS started taking Tamiflu on Tuesday, which fortunately, is the recommended treatment for the Brisbane strain as well as Swine Flu. DH and I both got the flu vaccine last fall and neither one of us has gotten sick. Brisbane (H3) is one of the strains that was covered in the flu vaccine. I just wanted to warn everybody about this because I'm sure DS picked it up on the cruise.

I wish I would have tried the Chicken. DH ordered that. I loved the Eggs Julia!

We probably were right out on deck 4 with you that day. I remember taking DS out there to walk in the "caves" that morning. (that is what he called the enclosed areas aft & forward on deck 4)

Loving your TR and pics! Looking forward to more! :)

Thank you:)

I took another look at that picture. We must have just cut you out because even your chair is visible.

I didn't know she got to go home. That's cool. I couldn't imagine leaving my family either. She told us she has been with DCL for 5 or 6 years so she has missed a lot of her son's teenage years. Maybe that is a good thing?;)

That grape & blue cheese pizza was so awesome and I never, ever would have tried it if I didn't here so much about it on the cruise boards:thumbsup2

awwwwwwwwwww... your poor lil man. I hope he's feeling better soon! Glad you guys got the flu shot so you are immunized!

DH came home tonight from work with a fever:guilty:

I guess the flu shot isn't covering him. I hope he gets a lighter case than DS.

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I hope he feels better... although you may want to be Florence Nightengale, I think you should do your best to tend from a distance.

Purell, Purell, Purell!

Stay healthy!

We all showered and dressed up in our formal gear. We had to get ready fast due to poor time management on my part. I didn’t dry my hair all the way.

The Golden Mickey’s Show was fabulous. I saw it five years ago but I really didn’t remember it. Any Walt Disney story (as in, the man, Walt Disney) will get me crying because I have such fond thoughts of him. The singing was beautiful. I felt so happy sitting there with my family, all dressed up, and watching the show. It was a special moment in time. DS especially liked the end when Mickey and Minnie came out. After the show, we waited in line for a while and got some formal pictures taken.

Please skip this next paragraph if bodily functions are not your thing.

I have been having problems with DS not pooping. He is at a stage in potty training where he is embarrassed to poop in a diaper but refusing to poop in the potty. Travel seems to make this problem worse. I was worrying about him because he had not pooped in six days:scared1: and he kept holding his belly and crying. DH and I took DS back to the cabin and, for about twenty minutes, strongly encouraged him to take care of business. Somehow DH convinced DS to go on the potty, which was awesome because he hasn’t done that before. DS actually named the poop, “Hot Dog Pooper.” Sorry, I couldn’t resist telling that story.

Okay, lets stop for a moment and regroup before we look at food pics.

How is everybody doing today?

We showed up 15 minutes late to dinner. Oops, I didn’t know we were late until DH announced the time after we sat down. Jayson told us the show for Animator’s Palate would be tomorrow night due to the Golden Mickey theme in this night.

I didn't realize the jumbo shrimp would be a pasta dish so DH and I traded. Remember, he is the "breadaholic." I liked the beef wellington better.

After dinner we went to Rockin’ Bar D to watch a band and then Heath Hyche, a comedian. He was funny. I really liked his Matthew McConaughey impression. He also did a funny improv joke about Mickey Mouse when the microphone shut off. I thought his improv was better than the scripted stuff. We didn’t get to stay for the whole show because we had to pick up DS from Flounder’s at 11 pm. I was a little worried that Heath Hyche would make fun of us when we exited the show because he was picking people out of the audience to make fun of. Thankfully, he didn’t notice our departure. When we picked DS up from Flounder’s, he was almost asleep already. We got back to the room and found our towel animal.

Hi! Love your trip report so far!! We are on the 5/23 to Tortola...first cruise!! We are in cabin 2645...so I am wondering how noisy your cabin was...was it noisy like that the whole time?? I'm a little bit concerned, but figure I'll get earplugs or something if it will be a problem.

thanks for sharing - lovely photos - your little boy is so cute and you all look great in your formals - lol at the poop story!:rotfl::rotfl:

All the folks complaining about the new menus need to check out your photos! That food looks awesome. I can't wait until we get to go.

oh I hope your husband feels better soon! I also hope your son is going to be fine!

Freaky!

To the menu comment - we didn't have the new menus. they are currently only on the Wonder. We even had the chocolate peanut butter pie still on the menu! :lovestruc

back to the trip report - my duaghter won't look at the camera either but wants you to take her picture everywhere! Whassup with that?

We were 15 minutes late lmost every night due to picture lines! We decided this cruise not to worry about, so we didn't. Our waitstaff was so dang slow it didn't matter anyways - it would inevitably take two hours to ge through dinner anyways and while we were not the last in to the dining rooms at night, we were always the last out. That stunk. So, by day three, we stopped worrying about being late.

The rest of my trip report is unwritten so I actually have to write more. For a few days I kept up with writing a daily report but by Wednesday I was tired of it.

I only noticed the loud noise on the first night. We were going from Port Canaveral to Key West. Maybe this is a further distance then usual for one night:confused: because I felt like we were going very fast and this was the loud night. The engine kind of rumbled the room the entire night.

The crew quarters are directly below this area of cabin. I asked one of our servers how she slept at night and she said that the noise helped her sleep at night. She said on the times they have been docked overnight she couldn't sleep.

I would get some ear plugs just in case. There was also a sound the morning we returned to Port Canaveral for a couple of hours while we docked.

I'm glad you liked the poop story. I thought about not including it but it was a big part of the evening.

That was my favorite soup too:)

That's cool that they brought you the soup for several nights. I should have asked for the Crepes Suzette on multiple nights. I loved that:love:

When we woke up the morning of the Cayman Island day, this was our view
CaymanIslands043.jpg

We ordered room service for breakfast since we had to be ready so early (well, for us). The first tender was at 7:30 and we weren’t even close to making it. I had not been good about reading our paperwork. On the last cruise I studied everything and practically memorized the navigators. This time I’ve been on a need to know basic with the information. I have really surprised myself by being this way since I am such a planner. Anyway, this relates to the story because I didn’t know we had to meet in the Theatre to get to tender. It was probably written somewhere. By the time a tender boat came and picked us up, we were already fifteen minutes late for the Sting Ray Adventure we were doing with Moby Dick Tours. The paperwork said to meet at 7:45 with a leaving time of 8:30. I thought it was weird that we had to be there 45 minutes early. I hoped they would let us go but we made a back up plan to go to 7-Mile Beach if we were too late.

Tendering

CaymanIslands004.jpg

We arrived at the Moby Dick booth at 8:20 and they said, “Perfect timing. We are leaving in ten minutes.” So they say you have to be there 45 minutes early for people like me who can’t show up on time. Shortly after this, we boarded an air-conditioned bus and rode through Georgetown and some other parts of the Cayman Islands. I kind of hoped the bus driver would give some information about the sites we were seeing but he didn’t. He had about five signs up in the bus that said, “TIPS ACCEPTED.” I was thinking he would probably get better tips if he gave us some facts about the island or said anything at all:confused3 Oh well. The bus ride was 10-15 minutes long. We then arrived at the site where the Moby Dick boat was waiting for us.

We met these characters
3amigos.jpg

I think Moby Dick Tours is completely underrated here on the Disboards. I really have mostly read about the other tour groups around here. These guys are the number #1 stingray tour on Trip Advisor and they have been voted best of Cayman Islands for the last two years. They are a hidden gem.

I was thoroughly entertained on the way to our snorkeling stop. Mr. England taught us a few things about stingrays while Mr. Italy narrated.
CaymanIslands009.jpg

DS not impressed
CaymanIslands010.jpg

We listened to some music as we took in the beautiful sights. The boat’s thermometer read 93 degrees and there was ZERO wind. The guys told us that they had not had a wind free day in two months. LUCKY:tink: What a perfect day to swim in the ocean!

Mangroves
CaymanIslands007.jpg

DS got sunscreen in his eye from laying his head on my shoulder so we spend about five minutes grabbing water from the cooler and flushing his eyes. We had to continuously remind him not to rub his eyes because he had sunscreen on his hands too. I was cursing myself in my head for buying the cheap sunscreen and not going with the tear free Waterbabies stuff:headache:

I thought DH and I would have to take turns snorkeling or not snorkel at all but...
CaymanIslands011.jpg

The water was so calm thanks to the lack of wind and I saw they had nice toddler sized life vests. DH and I got our snorkel gear on. I jumped in the water with DS first. He floated very nicely:)

CaymanIslands013.jpg

CaymanIslands015.jpg

After I got comfortable holding DS, I did some snorkeling while I held him in my right arm. He really enjoyed himself. I tried to get him to wear the snorkeling gear but he refused. He was much happier just floating around with me. DH took DS for a while so I could swim further out.

CaymanIslands017.jpg

There wasn’t a huge amount to see here but I but find some “Dori” fish (like Finding Nemo) and a lot of coral. My first snorkeling experience was at Trunk Bay in St. John, which had beautiful coral formations. I didn’t realize how beautiful it was until I snorkeled at some other spots. After about thirty minutes, a whistle sounded on the boat to indicate we should return.

We took a short boat ride to our next destination: Stingray City.
CaymanIslands021.jpg

Even though the crew kept telling us how tame and loving the stingrays were, I was a little apprehensive. I tried not to let DS notice so he wouldn’t get scared. Our group brought some squid into the water with us so the stingrays visited immediately. They feel like big mushrooms when they glide across your legs.
CaymanIslands025.jpg

CaymanIslands026.jpg

I looked back at the boat and I was surprised to see most of the kids ages 3-7 were sitting on the boat with various looks of terror on their faces. About half of them were crying. I guess they knew about Steve Erwin. DS never heard of him.

I got braver when I discovered for myself these really were gentle creatures. Mr. Cayman picked one up like a big floppy pizza.

CaymanIslands033.jpg

DS and I petted one and then kissed it for seven years of good luck.

CaymanIslands030.jpg

CaymanIslands039.jpg

I had to feed one so I could feel the “vacuum cleaner feeling” they were talking about. You are supposed to hold the squid in your fist like an ice cream cone top. Right away one came up and slurped the squid out of my hand. It makes a weird noise when it slurps too. It was audible above the water. DH refused to feed or kiss the stingrays. I think he was scared of them;)

CaymanIslands035.jpg

We interacted with the rays for about forty minutes until all the squid was gone. The ride back in the boat was awesome because it was such a nice day. They put on some music again while we cruised back to the starting point. I commented to DH that I thought the weather was probably the nicest I could recall in the history of my life. DH agreed.

Half way through the bus ride back, they stopped at Seven Mile Beach for those who wanted to but we decided to skip it. DS had already fallen asleep, we were hungry, and we wanted to eat the free food on the Mickey Boat. I would have liked to buy some rum cake to take back but, once again, it sucked to carry DS around in the heat. It would have to wait for another trip. The tender boat was waiting for us when we arrived.

CaymanIslands040.jpg

Back on the boat, we ordered some room service and relaxed for a bit while DS finished up his nap.

Up next: An unexpected visit from Alice in Wonderland and my disappointing night.
