Hi everyone:

I'm very proud that my niece, Robin, is going to be participating in the Avon Breast Cancer 3 day walk in MA. next month. I think everyone will agree that this is a VERY worthwhile cause, and something that has touched many of us here on the DIS very deeply. I would like to ask that those of you who are so inclined, to make a donation to sponsor my niece in this walk. Here is the letter that she sent out to all her friends and family:

On May 17th I will begin an amazing 3Day journey to help fight breast cancer.
From Fitchburg, MA to Boston, MA I will be walking. I do this to help all the mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts and friends who have had to fight this battle. In order to make the battle easier for them I need you to help. I need to raise $1,900 by May 16th. Please make a tax deductible donation to this cause. Go to http://www.bethepeople.com/donations/online.html From there follow the direction and include the following information with your donation Walker Name: Robin Bagley Event Code: 3DBO-2002 Participant Number: 6136 Check Digit: 8. Life is priceless please help preserve it with your donation.

I know that I speak for Robin when I say that any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. As such, any DIS member who supports this cause will have a special Avatar and Tag Line under their screen names to show that they supported the cause. I appreciate all you can do to help!

Thanks,
Pete

Help. I can get to the site by deleting the last period in your link address. But I can't find Robin with the search feature.

Hi! I fixed the link. And I got to the site. To get to Robin's page, you have to go to the Drop Down Menu and select the BOSTON walk. Then you can enter Robin's information listed above in the search.
Thanks for your interest in this worthy cause...

I do not want to be a fly in the ointment, and I think BC research is a GREAT cause (my mom is a 9 yr survivor) but I feel I must pass this on. There was an article in the paper in Dallas last week saying that this walk (which I'd contributed to earlier in the month) did not send a lot of the proceeds to the intended organization. My dad was reading the article, and I wasn't fully listening, but the jist of it was that the same walk in San Antonio earlier in the month had not netted a large percentage actually going to the research group. I do not want to generalize for each location, but as always, our donation $$ is precious, so please make sure that the organization you donate to sends as much as possible to the intended cause.

In response to your post TxAgs I just wanted to let you know that Pallotta Teamworks (the company that does the walks) gives 60% of the money raised to the cause which in this case is the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. That is more than what is required by law (only 50% is required by law). Also the amount of money going back to the cause depends on the number of walkers and the amount of money each walker raises. Though the minimum for each walker is $1900 the event coordinators hope that each walker raises more than the minimum. Also take into account the cost of feeding, housing and transporting all of the crew as well as the walkers. If you figure about 3,000 walkers plus however many crew members a particular event is lucky to have that is a lot of money to spend. So the more money raised the more money that goes back to the cause.
The way I figure it Pallotta is doing a great job in raising money for various causes. Without the huge PR and marketing campaigns they do most of the causes they support would not get the valuable funds they now get because of the work this company has done. I'm sorry if this sounds sharp and harsh but I have had to explain myself to so many people about this cause. I truly believe I'm doing a good thing and I thank all of you for any support you give. And TxAgs I'm glad that you spoke up because there are a lot of scams out there claiming to be great charities.
