Hi Ya'll!
Just returned last night from a great stay at WDW.
This is my 16th trip to Disney and my first with a DISability. That's me on the far right with the clever hair band hiding my receding hairline!
From the left, my Wife, Deni, ny nephew, Evan, my BIL, Karl and my Niece, Olivia.
I am fighting cholangeiocarcinoma. I am in a break from Chemo and while I was in a break (3 weeks), we decided to get away from reality and head to my happy place.
Although my trip this time was different, it wasn't bad or better than the previous 15.
Here's why:
I rented a scooter. It was the best decision ever. I'll admit I was a little wary because I was afraid of being judged as I look relatively healthy. I go to great extremes to look my best.
However, with the exception of one couple, who complained, not so quietly, about the time it takes loading and off loading scooters, all was well. CM's from bus drivers to custodians were, quite simply, amazing.
Oh, and to that snarky couple, I replied "...I have Cancer, I'm not deaf..." which got lots of giggles and thumbs up from my fellow passengers.
The scooter allowed me to walk when I could and scoot when I couldn't.
When I did not feel like walking, someone in my party rode it for me.
I also asked for the DAS because all of my chemo related issues are not solved by a mobility device.
At Guest Relations, I was asked what my limitations were. I told him and that was that.
All of the Magic Bands in my party were collected and scanned and we were on our way.
It was a painless process.
I forgot to add that no one ran into me and nor did I run into anyone else.
I would suggest that it would help everybody if you walked on the right side of the road.
That presented a bit of an issue but. It was the exception and not the rule.
We had a fabulous trip, made great new memories, and escaped reality for 5 days.
These memories will see me through. I start Chemo again in the morning!
If I could tell you anything, it is live your life for today.
Go to Disney. Rent a scooter, get the DAS, and, most important, don't let anyone steal your joy!
I'm already planning trip #17!
