I know someone on the DIS Budget Board will appreciate this!

I was in a local Acme market (part of Albertson's?) last night and saw a shelf of jars of Beechnut baby food on clearance for $.25 each. Now I haven't purchased baby food for a few years, but that is a pretty good price (the regular prices on the shelves were $0.50-0.60), and we have a food pantry in town that has been having a rough time keeping food in stock for those who need it. I had some coupons at home and decided to go back today.

When I got there this morning, coupons in hand, the jars had been marked down to 5/$1! DS8 and I filled the bottom of a cart with the last 48 jars and added in two canisters of infant cereal for $1 each. I used four $2 off 12 coupons and ended up paying about $1.60 for 48 jars of cereal and $2 for two cans of cereal.

When the receipt printed, it also printed coupons for Gerber's baby food 2-packs (and $1 off your next order), which were also on the clearance shelf at 5/$1. I went back in and with the coupons got an additional 21 2-packs for $1.70!

Since we were on a roll, and DS8 was really excited :yay: to be doing "lots of good deeds today" we went to another Acme nearby. Unfortunately they didn't have the jars of food on clearance, but they did have boxes of Gerber cereal for $0.50! We bought the last seven on the shelf.

So, DS8 had a great day learning to do for others who need it :lovestruc, which was wonderful to see all by itself, and we will be delivering 9 packages of infant cereal, 48 individual jars of baby food, and 21 2-packs of baby food to the local food pantry. All for under $9.00.

Yes, I checked the expiration dates, and they are all February 2011 or later.

All in all, a rather amazing day! Is there a word for something that's better than a bargain? :woohoo:

That was a really nice thing to do :).

Please don't take this as flaming you or anything, but I hope you didn't clear the shelf out in the store because that probably would've made someone with a baby at home's day, especially if money was tight.

Good deal! I love doing that kinda stuff with my DD9! We did a food drive with her Girl Scout troop and they actually went to the food pantry and did a tour and got to see how it worked. It was great for them to see all that! :goodvibes

I did something similar today too! I was in Walmart and saw they had smaller bags of Kitten Chow on clearance for $1.87 which reminded me I had several coupons for FREE Kitten Chow. I had 5 coupons, so I got 5 bags to take to the shelter!!!!!!

Recently my boys who are 5 and 6, have started watching "Last Chance Highway" on Animal Planet and we were talking about getting our kitten 'fixed' so he can't make babies because shelter are so full of dogs and cats.... I used the time to tell them about being a responsible pet owner. Anyway we talked about bringing stuff to the shelter!!!! When ever I find stuff like that on sale, I pick it up. Target $1 Spot is also a great place to find toys and such. A few month back I found fleece blankets for about $0.65 and got 5 or so of them. When I dropped them off the shelter was so grateful!!!!!

This has never crossed my mind before. What a great idea!!! If I didn't know someone who could use the coupons, I just threw them out. :sad2: Now, don't I feel stupid. Thanks for the idea!

What a great thing to teach your son!

And as a food pantry volunteer, THANK YOU!

OP here...DS8 and I were talking about that yesterday as well. He is very interested in seeing the food pantry, and I'm going to ask them if children can do anything to help!

I have those coupons and think I'll do the same thing! Thanks!

I don't know why I still had them, as I usually don't keep coupons for baby stuff either. Now I will!

OP here...everything that happened yesterday got me thinking last night. I just got back into couponing, and can already tell that I'll be able to get much more at great prices then we can use or have room to store. And I loved seeing DS8's enthusiasm yesterday, and would like to keep that going. So I'm going to make shopping for the food pantry a regular part of bargain hunting!

That's awesome! :thumbsup2 I try and do that with my DD, age 5, too. She loves bargain hunting for the food pantry.

What a great life lesson... wish there were more parents out there like you!:thumbsup2

We do that when stores have B1G1 and I know I won't be able to use it all up. That happens a lot with potatoes. I buy a 5 lb bag that I will use, get the free bag and stop at the food shelf on the way home. I love your baby food bonanza!

What a great thing to do... helping others and teaching your daughter a great life lesson. :goodvibes
