I have just read mfm. Thanks to all that suggested it. I am walking the princess half and am concenred about being swept. I am not so good with real techie gadgets BUT......

I would feel better if I had something that would tell me how many miles I have gone and want my pace is. is there such a thing? cost for it?

I know i can clock it with my car and time myself but my car clocks in km's and I like to just go when I walk so I don't always have to do the same route.

Hi! There are a lot of different brands of devices available. I use a Garmin Forerunner 201 and would be lost without it. There are several later versions, but the 201 works fine for me - in fact it has lots of stuff I don't use at all. I basically use a couple of screens during an event. The first one shows the overall time since I crossed over the start line (also called chip time), the total distance covered, and my current pace. Another screen shows the time of day and average pace. I also have it set to show the lap time, which I have set for one mile. I think I paid about $100 for mine back in 2005. There are lots of options, but I love my Garmin.

Good luck with your training!

Garmins are pretty much what most people wear for pace and miles done. Pretty accurate. Different models and many different price ranges depending on where yo buy one.

Here is the website:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142

Most people use the 205, 305 or the new 405.

Hope this helps,

Racey Tracy

I use the Garmin 205 and works great. I don't need heart monitor or expense of 405.

I use mine as my watch as I am so attached to it :rolleyes1

thanks for the info 205 sounds like all i need. was going to go into the runner store tomorrow but I don;t want to be sold more than i need.

i can get a 305 from costco for 199. (canadian) or a 205 from best buy for 219. so i guess i will go with the 305...hope it is not too techno for me. I was hoping to get something for 100.00 but I guess that is not realistic.

You will :lovestruc the 305. It isn't that hard to use. I probably don't use all the features, since my only concern is mileage and time. I do wear the HR monitor, would be lost without it.

Good luck and enjoy!

I have a Garmin 305 w/HRM. The heart rate monitor really does give you good information to help you with your training - to see if you are over training, under training, or training in the correct "zone."

Right now, Amazon has it for $162.12 with free shipping. They also have the 205 for $119.99.

Another one chiming in. I love my Garmin. I use the 205. Had a HR monitor (polar) but I've not used it in quite some time. The HR monitor is a good gadget for beginning, so if you get the 305 you may find good use for it. It will help you push to the max recommended HR and not over for your initial training. After a time I find that I have been working in my upper/normal range and have set the monitor aside.

I know we will hear all kinds of good from you about your new toy. It is very empowering.

Does anyone use the Nike attachement for the iPod? I have been using for a few months now and love it.

I'm another one that love's my Garmin 205. I would be absolutely lost without it! I don't use it to it's full capacity; using mainly the pace feature and to track each of my runs. Love it!

I tried my garmin last night and love it!!! thanks for all the reccomendations. i haven't tried the heart r monitor yet but will

Any suggestions on choosing sun glases?

I use it. (Although i'm still in the C25K program, so I'm not a serious runner yet). I love it. I was wondering what the opinions were about the nike/ipod setup. I happen to love the tracking on Nikeplus.com. Have you ever used their coach programs? Just curious.

I have not used the coach program yet. There are several programs if you are training for a race, so I will use the half marathon training program when I am ready to start my serious running for the Princess Half in March.

I really like it. It's like have a trainer run with you and give you updates on distance and pace.
