A Few Words About the Diplomat Resort Maingate

Called the Best Western Diplomat Resort Maingate when we booked our room (and had 5 of 6 nights for $44.50 + $2/night resort fee), we arrived on 2/25 to discover that the hotel had been sold and had not been Best Western for three weeks. They did, however, honor our 50% EC rate.

This hotel was adequate for our needs, more than adequate in some areas. They have an indoor pool with water fall and a hot tub, an outdoor pool; buffet restaurant and continental breakfast counter, food court with pizza and karaoke in the evening; a lounge; guest laundry.

The room we had was 2 queens, safe, TV, refridgerator (very small, and a Mickey Mouse phone (cute!). They do have some kind of "kids suites", which seem to be rooms with bunks in a themed, partitioned part of the room and a queen bed for parents.

The biggest problem is that the hotel is in need of referbishing. They've already redone the lobby and first floor halls and public areas, but haven't yet moved elsewhere and things are looking very worn. They also need new sheets to go with the new bedding. Our fitted sheet would never stay on the bed :(

They are going to change names (AGAIN!) very soon and are moving forward with their rehab work even now. They do not have dawn to dark shuttles, but we found the drive to WDW parks very short (never more than 20 minutes).

If you are looking for a reasonable rate, clean room and some ammenities, but not luxury, I'd say give them a try.

Funny, I stayed at the same hotel, under different ownership three years ago and the lobby and most rooms were being "refurbished". I guess this is a neverending process. Our room was run down and there were cracks in the ceiling and wall. After threatening to leave they finally found a suite for us, we paid another 80/night for it and it was big, but very budget. I would not recommend this hotel unless all involved understand you are going budget in a big way. The next time we went we had a one bedroom suite on a golf course at Parc Corniche on Int'l drive. We payed 30.00 more pernight and it was well worth it. :)

I asked at the front desk as we checked out, but they didn't even know yet. Go figure!!
