A Feather Bed/Down Comforter Question

I bought a beautiful expensive featherbed when I moved- because it was cheaper than a new mattress...........but then I read the tag

Dry Clean Only....hmmmmmmm

So today i was at the laundry mat, and I asked the attendant, who I've known since I was little- she use to work with my mom, if that really had to be drycleaned.

She said- she washes them, and down comforters all the time, she uses the 50lb washer, and puts 4-5 tennis balls in the dryer with it...never had a problem. The thread count is very high on this- and it has numerous stitched baffles, the feathers are not going to just end up in one pile at the corner etc..

Anyone ever done this?????

Not that I'd reccommend risking this, because maybe I just got lucky, but I wash my down comforter at home all the time. (Well, as often as you really need to clean a down comforter that is covered by a duvet) and I've never had a problem just putting in it my washing machine by itself.

Most of the time, I just spot clean it. A few times a year I do throw it in the wash though, on a cold setting and then put it in the dryer on the air dry setting. It takes a long time to dry.

No lost feathers or tears in the stitching and it's still poofy and comfy.

This is the second down comforter I've done this with. The first one wound up getting ripped when a then 8 month old Monty Dog decided down comforters were good snacks.

I machine wash my down comforter at home all the time. It takes 2 or 3 cycles in the dryer before it's completely dry.
I have two fat cats that love to sleep on my comforter, so I have to wash it weekly, I would go broke if I dry cleaned it so often!
