A Diva and Her Mom Invaded Disney!!

This whole "mom tagging along" thing is actually working out quite nicely...

We were able to 'upgrade' to a moderate. I was able to make ADRs for all of the restaurants I wanted to try. We're signed up for the Segway tour in Epcot, which my friends vetoed. And now we've got tickets to see Cirque du Soleil La Nouba! I'm so excited! I've wanted to see it for ages but my son isn't interested. And I never would have even brought it up with my friends and their limited budgets.

So this is shaping up to be an excellent vacation, a chance for me to try all of the things I wanted to but never could when I was with the whole family. ;)

It sounds like your change of plans really IS working to your advantage now! That's great!

My trip report begins here.

Hello, curious readers! :welcome:

First, let me lead you to the Pre-Trippie for this particular vacation: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2009918. My food report is here.

So, with this report, I'll start with the cast of characters:

Me - I'm 30 years old and went to Disney several times as a child. It wasn't until my mom and stepdad took me and my 5 year old son to Disney for his 5th birthday that I fell in love with it. I loved planning every detail and getting everyone excited about it. I've always been an obsessive planner, but I really got into it this time. I drove everyone crazy! And once we arrived, it was all over for me. Pure Disney love! pixiedust:

Mom - my mom is of the AARP variety, though I won't get into specifics (because I value our relationship too much), and she has been visiting Disney since I was a young'un. I'm not sure what made her want to take my son for his birthday (I should ask her that) but I'm so glad she did! They (she and my stapdad) had a wonderful time, both with being there after so many years, and seeing it through my son's eyes. In fact, they loved it so much that we eventually took 2 week-long Disney cruises, and went back for my son's 9th birthday, too.

Now you're probably wondering how this whole trip happened. (Did I just read your mind or what?!) Well, I have 2 friends that I'm very close with. We all work(ed) in the same office, and two of us have been friends longer than the third. Well, the two of us (me and L) made plans to go on a 5-day cruise together, leaving from a nearby newly-built port. Well, last December, while I was on a Disney cruise with the family, L was laid off. At first she insisted she would still go, then she just couldn't get a job, so she eventually canceled on me. No problem, I completely understood.

A few months later, we were out shopping with the third friend (S), and we started talking about taking a girl's only trip, a Diva Vacation, if you will (L likes to call us the Divas). So at first we were focused on New York. I am always talking about my desire to see Phantom of the Opera.

... Got to run now, but I'll be back!

Okay, where was I? Ah, yes, how we ended up with a Disney trip.

So, after listening to me go on and on about Phantom, L suggests we go to New York for a few days. See shows, do some shopping, eat at great restaurants. So I rush out and buy a New York book and start looking at hotel prices. Yowza! :faint: The girls were not very excited about the cost, but I did manage to get a hotel room booked and get one third of the deposit from them both.

Then I start talking about show prices and restaurant prices, and suddenly they don't want to go. It's too expensive. Where is somewhere where it's basically all-inclusive and reasonably priced? :confused3

Of course, my first idea was Disney! Is it reasonably priced they asked? Well, we can stay in a value resort. What about the tickets? They're a little more than our local Busch Gardens, but I can find a deal. Will it be fun for us? Are you kidding - they have coasters and shows and rides for people of all ages. What about shopping? Lots and lots of shopping, both for Disney and non-Disney branded stuff. Okay, they said, give us some options.

So home I head to check out my trusty Passporter, as well as the Disney site and of course, these boards. :disrocks: I create a bunch of different scenarios with prices for each. It's expensive, sure, but we three divas are looking to have some fun away from home. We agree on a package and off I go, booking the trip.

So, that was in May of '08. Every once in a whle, I send an email out with something like "Check this out - is this something you guys would like to do? Only 150 more days!" Or "10 days and counting!" I routinely got an unenthusiastic, "yeah, that looks fine." or, "I don't know, let me look over the book this weekend." It didn't sound like they were at all excited, but they kept insisting they were.

So, cut to about 7 weeks before trip and S says, "Maybe I shouldn't go. It's too expensive and I haven't saved enough money." So L says, "Then I don't want to go either."

Now, believe me, it dragged on for weeks and involved a lot more words and conversations, but I cut all of that out for brevity's sake (no laughing!). The bottom line was I suspected our trip was in jeopardy. I was talking to my mom about it and I said, "If they cancel, would you be interested in going?" She says no right off the bat, without pausing to think about it.

So, the friends are going back and forth, should we go or not? All this time, I'm looking into a solo trip, reading the solo trip boards and figuring out how much it would cost for the room and all. Finally they decide they will not go. As soon as I read the emails, I tell mom, "Well, they did it, they canceled." She says "Well, maybe I'll just go with you." Um, what?

Turns out she'd been thinking about it the whole time and had decided that if the girls cancel, she'll go ahead and come with me. At first I'm not very excited because, you know, it's my mom. I'd really been getting excited about a solo trip. But she wanted to go, and we do get along really well. And besides, we'd never taken a trip together, just the two of us, in so long, it would be a fun chance for us to reconnect.

So, there you have it. A diva was dumped by her friends and her mom stepped up to the plate.

Next, the trip begins...

I'm in! That description of your friends waffling on and finally dumping the trip gave me the shudders. Yikes! I can't wait to see how it turned out with you and your mom.

Okay, the trip begins...

We wake up at the butt crack of dawn (aka 5am) and manage to get out the door on time. An uneventful plane ride later and we are in sunny Florida. There was a small snafu with the rental car (Avis's Preferred Service is neither faster nor easier), but eventually we were on our way to Caribbean Beach Resort. I had never been to this resort before, so I was looking forward to seeing it in person for the first time.

At the Custom House we checked in and I found out that our two room requests (Aruba 51, ground floor) had been granted (thank you Room Assigner! :worship:). Once we arrived at our room, I discovered we also had a corner room, which meant an extra window. Yay!

The room was absolutely beautiful. It had a slight musty scent, but after half an hour of the air conditioner on full blast, it was gone. We loved the colors and patterns in the room, obviously very tropical. It had plenty of storage; we especially liked the coat rack above the bench, we hung our sweatshirts and sweaters there so we could grab them quickly when running out to the parks every morning.

After we unpacked all of our suitcases, we headed over to Hollywood Studios. In all of our past trips, we had never been there because it didn't look like something my son would like (and isn't Disney all about the kids? ;)), so this time we tried it out.

The first thing we did was find someplace to eat. We didn't have reservations, but 50s Prime Time looked so fun, we decided to wait for a table. An hour later, by the time we were both grumpy from hunger, they called us and we had a seat. That was a very fun restaurant, and the food was decent (for my full food/restaurant review, check this thread).

After lunch, we headed over to the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster to get a FastPass for me. Mom has a bad back so she is staying away from any rides with a health warning.

FP in hand, we headed over to the Indiana Jones show. We got there right as it was beginning, so we didn't get a close seat. We sat in the back, off to the side, but we liked those seats just fine and when we do go see the show again, we will not wait in a line just to get a seat up front. It was a very entertaining show, and my son will definitely see it next time we're there.

Now it's time to use my FP for the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Holy cow! I was not expecting that first take off, where (I found out later) it goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. After that initial shock, I enjoyed the ride. I'm a pretty big baby when it comes to coasters, so I was very proud of myself for doing it alone. Yay for me. :cheer2:

After that, we went straight over to the Tower of Terror. This one I knew all about, but I was still surprised every time the seat dropped out from under me! So much fun.

Sounds Dangerous with Drew Carey, Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show and the Studio Backlot Tour were all closed during our visit. Bummer. We did want to check out Toy Story Mania, but the wait was always too long. Maybe next time.

We also saw two groups of street performers. The first was two guys, one on a roof, the other down below, talking about how he needed a plunger because he dropped the boss's prized trophy in the toilet. Along comes the boss and antics ensue. Very very funny, we laughed out loud the whole time.

The other was a group of actors who were putting on a show about Lancelot and Sir Galahad and it had a chalice or something. Anyway, the three main actors were very funny, and they brought in people from the audience to play along. One of the guys, the one who played the king, was English. His job was to sing a song (Giche giche yaya dada from Moulin Rouge) and do a little dance every time the audience said "Long live the king!" I guess he wasn't familiar with the song because he botched it every time. But he had a loud booming voice and was such a great sport, so he tried hard. The other guy they brought up to be Sir Galahad was also a great sport, he played along and added his own flair. It was all very funny. Mom and I laughed so hard.

Finally, after a little store-seeing, we headed back to our resort so we could get ready for dinner at Il Mulino.

Sounds like a good trip so far. I had started to plan a trip for 8 of us for this coming August and like you, at least I found out sooner than later and we will go somewhere else to celebrate our friend's 60th birthday and her receiving her doctorate....

After a yummy dinner at Il Mulino (check here for my food report), it was back to the room for a good night's sleep.

We set the alarm for early the next morning, because we had to be at Epcot by 8:45 for our Segway tour. That obnoxious beeping woke us up right on time and we were out the door with plenty of time to spare.

There was a small crowd gathered in front of Epcot, as it didn't open until 9 that morning. First we went to the Guest Services counter in front, and they told us to go over to the turnstile on the far left, the one marked for character breakfasts. We headed over there and there was a cast member with a clipboard. We told him our name and they had the last name wrong. I thought there might be an issue, but no. We showed him an ID, and in we went. (As an aside, there was this guy hanging around out there, and when we were looking at the clipboard, I looked up and almost headbutted him. He was looking over my shoulder, trying to read the clipboard! Very odd.) I have to admit, it gave us a tiny thrill watching the envious stares from those left waiting out in the cold. And it was cold!

So we headed over to the Guest Relations and checked in. We had to show ID again, and sign the "we're not responsible if you suck at the Segways and fall off and hurt something" form, get a sticker namebadge, then we sat and waited. Not sure why we had to be there so early, since the Segway tour leader didn't show up until 9am on the dot. Also, a sidenote - those benches in the waiting area are not comfy! :confused3

So, the tour leader shows up and leads us to Innoventions, where the Segway setup is. We grab a helmet and sit down for the official spiel. I've done the quick and dirty 10 minute Segway thing in Innovnetions twice now, so I knew all of this and it was boring listening to it for the third time. There were a few new nuggets of information, which I guess is only for the long tours. Anyway, that was over soon enough and we dropped all of our stuff and headed out to hop on the segways. At this time, one of the guest relations cast members joined us. He would be the one that gave us information on areas of Epcot, while our other guide focused on the segway aspect.

First, we did a whole lesson about stepping on and off. We lined up in rows and stepped on and off one at a time. Then we practiced going forward, turning and going back, slalom, going up and down ramps, and stopping. Finally, we were ready to hit the pavement. A few of us grabbed our cameras and tucked them into the bags on the front of the segways, and we went single file outside, following our guide.

We went through Future World, passing by early park-goers who pointed at us. A few even took pictures! We were allowed through the rope separating the World Showcase and then headed to Mexico. We stopped at every "land" and learned something about it.

In China we learned that the arched ceremonial gate is patterned after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Also, here we did a "challenge" which involved following the footbridges up and down and taking turns and corners.

In Japan, we swooped through the Hill Garden, making turns and loops and going up and down ramps.

In Italy, we learned that the belltower is an authentic replica of the original campanile in St. Mark's Square. It was here that we did our slalom "challenge", weaving in and out of the columns. It was also here that we stopped at the "PictureSpot" and were allowed to roam free for a few minutes. We all did straight lines, taking the segways up to their top speeds, then stopped and took a bunch of pictures.
WDW0109039.jpg

In American Adventures, we heard that the national bird was almost a turkey. :scared:

Of course, I can't remember everything, but the new knowledge wasn't why we did this tour! It was so much fun! It was kind of breezy that morning, so a few people were complaining about the cold (and zipping around on the segways made the wind a factor), but I was able to ignore it.

After we did all of the worlds, we went back through Future World, which was much more crowded by this time. Back at Innoventions, we hopped off and got our special Segway Tour pins.

There is just nothing else out there that compares to this experience. So much fun and we will both do it again in a heartbeat! :thumbsup2

So, now that we're cold and have sore legs (which is nothing compared to how my thighs will feel tomorrow morning! :scared1: ), we head over to Soarin' for our FastPasses. By this time, we're pretty hungry, and mom wants some coffee, so we go to Sunshine Seasons in the Land for lunch.

After mom has stopped complaing about being cold, we run over to Test Track for my FP (the health warning precludes mom), then loop back to Soarin'. This is one of my favorite attractions at Epcot, and probably mom's favorite in all of WDW. So wonderful, with the breeze and scenery. A great chance to relax. This time, we were seated in the last row, which meant dangling feet at the top of our view. Every other time we've been on it, we had front row seats, so it was a little distracting, seeing someone's sneakers dangling in front of me, but eventually I got used to it.

We wandered over to Mission Space and grabbed a FP, then I headed to Test Track while mom perused the nearby shops. Honestly, I don't know what all the fuss is about with this ride. It was entertaining enough, and the last speedy section outside (again with the cold!) was fun, but it was so jerky and kind of boring. Oh, well. At least I can say I've tried it.

We wanted to check out Turtle Talk with Crush, because that was so funny last time, but the line was so long, we said forget it. We decided to go back over to the World Showcase and check out each 'world'. We stopped in France and partook of the bakery (yummy chocolate mousse), and looked at the different shops and showcases.

Finally, we went back to Mission Space, which we were both riding (the Green, milder version). Now, let me preface this by saying I am claustrophobic. Without question. Everyone knows this about me. So, when we kept seeing all of the warnings about enclosed, dark spaces, mom kept asking me if I was sure. I kept saying, yeah, it'll be fine. Well, it was not fine. At first, when we sat down, I said, okay, this is cozy. Then the door shut and I thought, okay, look at all this leg room. Then the consoles came down and it was all over. Major panic attack. Every time I closed my eyes, the walls would come in, so I would open them and then I could see that the walls had already closed in. By the time the ride stopped, I was sobbing. We climb out and mom says are you okay? I'm crying "I did not like that." So, if you rode Mission Space on January 15 and saw some crazy chick come running out of there, crying like a baby, that was me. For the record, I do not like Mission Space.

By this time, I'm tired (crying always makes me sleepy) and we're getting hungry, so we head back to the resort and get a little rest before we change clothes for dinner.

We make it to Spoodles and enjoy our dinner. What a beautiful resort the Boardwalk is. I wish it hadn't been so chilly, so we could have walked around and checked it out. But we ended up just driving over to Downtown Disney and shopping a bit in the Virgin store.

Next up was Cirque du Soleil La Nouba. I just don't even know what to say about this one. We were both enthralled. Absolutely magnificent. And when we go back to the World, we will take my son and stepdad with us to see it again. Incredible. ::yes::

Finally, two tired pups head back to the resort to wind down and get some sleep.
