My kids have MLK day and 2 other days out of school that week so I found a GREAT deal for an off-site condo (read $250 for the week). So we are going Jan 14-21. On out last trip we visited FW and I really enjoyed it. My kids would love the pool and biking around for a while. I was thinking of renting a small campsite for just one night. We wouldn't stay there, just park and use a a base. At the end of the day we would head back to indoor plumbing and heat :rotfl2:

So assuming the decent weather hold into January. How crazy does this plan sound. I'm thinking we could go to the pool for 2 afternoons right?? If you are a fort guest is there parking near the pool?? I have a 2 and a 4 year old and the amount of stuff required for the pool makes carrying it on a bike next to impossible!!

Does this plan sound completly nuts??

Not if you belong to the Polor club. January can be very cold into February. Even with the pool some what heated the air can be very cold. Trip sounds great but be ready for some fall clothing.

Is there a pool at the condo? I would save the time and $ and swim there.

no car parking at pool at FW. will need to have golf cart or bus from your loop to the pool. this can be a challenge even in warm weather.

If the money's not an issue than I think that's a good idea. As long as you're polite to your neighbors (which most Fort-Folk are, as compared to most State Parks we frequent) I'm sure no one will care what you do. We make a day out of the Fort (walking, biking, canoes, beach) even when we're not staying there! Actually, the first "Fort Day" we took (staying offsite and wanted to check it out) we were so impressed we went out and bought our camper the next month; it The Fort flipped-the-switch for us and we've been 'campers' ever since.

marclichon,

That's okay my friend. Different opinions are welcome here (they have been for the last 11 months or so). You make a good point about how the Fort encouraged you to get into camping. It's certainly among the best camping experiences you can have.

We did something similar last year in March. Stayed at a different Disney resort but also had one night at a campsite in the middle. We didn't use the campsite to sleep. We rented a Disey golf cart, parked our car at our rented site, and enjoyed the atmosphere of Fort Wilderness. We swam at the Fort Wilderness pool on two afternoons (the day of check in and the day of check out - I asked when I checked in if we could swim at the FtW pool all day on the day of check out). Your young kids would enjoy the children's water play area about 25 feet from the main pool. You wouldn't necessarily need to rent a golf cart like we did, you could park your car at the campsite, walk over to a bus stop & take a bus to one of the stops around the pool/Meadow Trading Post area. Note that the gold carts are a lot of fun, allowing you to quietly (battery powered) drive around FtW and enjoy the atmosphere, though renting a cart will cost you about $60, which is more than a basic campsite in January. Also, we went in the middle of March when the afternoon temps were just high enough to swim every day. January will be hit or miss in terms of swimming temperatures.
