A cooking question...

Just a couple of questions....

In the kitchen, do people ever cook something in the oven and leave the oven on while they are at the parks? Like for Thanksgiving...

Second, I see people shipping some of their grocery items ahead of time. Is it that much more expensive to buy it at Goodies or Publix?

We're getting ready for our first trip home and some cooking will be done :( It is still worth it though, because we get to be at WDW during the holidays!

Thanks!

Deb

Publix and Winn-Dixie are less expensive than Goodings.

As for Thanksgiving, why not order the whole meal already cooked from the grocery store?

I agree Goodings is much pricier. As for having the groceries shipped to the room ahead of time, I think it's more of a convenience thing myself. Not sure if it's more expensive or not. My guess would be more expensive than less though. Maybe you should check out Netgrocer.com? I've heard that one mentioned before. If you decide to go for a grocery stop yourself though, there is both a Publix and a Wal-mart not too far from WDW.;)

and a couple of super targets, if you are thinking of the publex on 192, the new super target is right there, and before sams and way before walmart. There is another one on the toll road at orange blossum trail too.

Goodings is a lot pricier, heck most of goodings is a crime, but they have some things that are better than walmart or publix. A lot of what they have is tourist trap - I've never seen a whole grocery store so devoted to tourists - but they have a much better beer/wine than walmart or publix or target. Way better beer. They also have some pretty good treats. So there is a purpose of the place. I remember once that tiny little packages of bacon were more than I'd expect a regular package to be. But good luck finding Chimay or Lindemans at publix.

Just a guess, but I think the people who ship food ahead are the ones who are flying in and don't have a car to use for easy shopping trips.

We'll be in HH over Thanksgiving, (not staying at DVC) and plan to get the Publix meal already cooked for us.

Hope you have a great holiday!!!

Thanks Everyone!

We'll be renting a car so there should be no problems buying groceries. It is doubtful we will go to Goodings though.

It maybe crazy, but out of the 9 days we'll be there, I'm hoping to only eat out 2 times for dinner. Now if we really do it or not, that remains to be seen. We're trying to be thrifty. We're almost done paying off our 175 points purchased last year :D

I'll let you know how it goes!

You have excellent taste in beer my friend.

(Sorry to go off topic for a second, but) Fans of such full-flavor brews should check out Le Cellier's beer list. They have some of the wonderful Unibroue ales from Quebec. These beverages put a unique new-world spin on traditional Trappist style brewing. Try my favorite; the Trios Pistoles, a sensational amber-red beer slightly reminiscent of Chimay Blue.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Costco is there somewhere between the airport and Disney near 417.

I've heard of people driving down with a crock pot and leaving it going while they went to the parks.

I can't get over how much information is available on this board. Last year I asked my manager, who lives in Orlando, if there was a store around Disneyworld. She guided me to Goodings of all places! I can't wait to stop at Costco and pick up some pre-mixed Margaritas. And food of course.

How are the prices at the super Target? We don't have any in our area and I've never been to one. Also, exactly where is it on 192? Thanks.

The Super Target on 192 is just behind the Publix.

But, when we were there in Sept., it had not opened yet.

Does anyone know if it is open now? It looks like a great alternative to Publix.

Publix was less expensive than Goodings, but we still paid $6 or $7 a pound for BOLOGNA. I just about hit the floor when I saw that! (OK, granted, it was Boar's Head.......but come on....)

Is Goodings the only supermarket that you can shop online and have them deliver?

How are the prices comparatively to the MS shopping site? How about the selection?

Sorry for all the questions!

My maternally instilled paranoia would never let me leave an oven on with a residence unoccupied and given most people's opinions on cooking at DVC, I'd be surprised if many people have even lit the oven. :)

As for Goodings, they do have a good selection of some things, they are convenient, they typically don't have lots of people in line writing checks or using coupons, and they are still much cheaper than eating in WDW. Would I shop there on a regular basis, no, but for the items we'd need for the villa, yes.

Thanks rinkwide - it gets even better. Now they have four unibroue bottles at the beaver tale stand in epcot (this is an outdoor stand that sells a pastry). They have la fin du monde, trios pistoles, maudite, and blanche de chambly, so you can get a good beer whenever you stroll through world showcase, not just when you have a meal in La Cellier - no doubt the best beers in world showcase.

Publix is on SR 192. There is also a Winn-Dixie. If you go out the gate near DD(the one that puts you right across the street from Goodings), and take a left, go down the street about 5-10 minutes, Winn-Dixie is on the right.

We usually do Publix. I've had good luck there.

Good news indeed!

Now if we could just get a decent Wiessbier into Germany...

This trip, we cooked a main meal each day because our guests could not afford to feed their families at WDW prices every meal. When we had things that needed to cook a bit longer than we wanted to be at the villa, we set the timer for the oven and the food was done when we arrived to serve it. Just like at home.
