First Time Leaving Kids Home With Daddy

Ahh...I remember it well.

My ds was 3 and my dd was 2. I hadn't been out of the house alone in about 3 years and thought it was time.

I decided to make a quick run to the grocery store which was just around the corner.
DH was watching tv and seemed alert. Told him I'd be back in about 15 minutes. Asked him if he would be okay alone with the kids. He didn't see what the big deal was...but to me it was major. Okay, so I trot off...fending off guilt.
I do my thing at the store, and then in the parking lot I run into my best long lost friend from high school! That was great. We chatted for a few, and then I headed home.
Not so bad...YaY, I did it!

I walk thru the front door and the first thing I notice is an odd little object on the rug. Upon further inspection I see it is a piece of an uncooked hotdog. As I proceed, I see there is a trail of these hotdogs...some whole, some with bite marks. I follow the trail into the kitchen and there are my babies....looking like they just returned from Clown Cosmetology U!
The Avon lady had dropped off my stuff earlier and the bag had been on the kitchen counter.
The kids had gotten into it and had made themselves up with the most luscious shade of lipstick you ever saw!
Apparently they snacked on 2 packages of hotdogs while they
adorned themselves.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! But then I screamed...where is Daddy??
I followed the hotdog trail back to the living room, and there was Mr. Wonderful...fast asleep on the couch.
I moved in closer, furious...but then, I stopped.
The clown children's father had also been made-up and the tube of lipstick was nestled in the spot between his nose and his upper lip.
I watched for a moment as it rose and fell with each snore.

And then I smacked him.
He had no clue! I told him to go look at the kids. I told him to follow the hotdog trail and look at himself in the bathroom mirror.

Luckily this is all that happened on that day...my first time out alone. Luckily I even laughed about it...about a week later!

Does this kind of stuff happen to everyone??
:p

WOW! That is some story but I cannot imagine not having left DS with his Dad for that many years.

DH started watching DS by himself before DS was even a month old while I would make the occassional trip to Wal-Mart or the grocery store.

The only interesting thing that has happened is when DS was about 4 months old. I had to work late that night and DH was at home with DS. I called the house to tell him that I would be coming home shortly and he did not answer the phone. I thought maybe he was changing a diaper, in the bathroom, etc. so I waited and called back in 5 minutes. Still not answer...so I call his cell phone and no answer. I called over and over and I finally freaked out and terrible things ran through my mind and I raced home. I think I set a speed record for driving while trying to dial a cell phone! When I get home DH and DS are sound asleep on the couch. I wake DH up and he told me he was so tired that he never even heard the phone.

I think I lost a year of my life that day just from the worry.

nope - My DH participated in taking care of the kids from day one and has always insisted that I have time out of the house and away from them.

I don't think twice about leaving them. He's a great parent.

I know becka, hard to believe. But, dh works 12-hour shifts and lots of overtime. And when he was home I knew he was tired.
So yes, I guess I was a wee bit hesitant to venture out, lol.

I never had anything like that happen, but my MIL tells a funny story about her husband. DH's uncle and aunt had just had a baby girl. MIL and her sister the aunt decided to leave the baby with the men while she was asleep, so they could do some shopping. The men were great about it and said no problem.

About an hour later they got to talking about someone's new horse. They decided they should go take a look at it and you guessed it, they left the baby asleep alone in the house. I have no idea how long it was before they stopped talking long enough to realize what they had done. They broke speed records getting back to the house and the baby was still sleeping soundly. That was over 40 years ago, but they've never lived it down! :teeth:

That's MY plan! :)

*********** :D <---I would like that to be a big grinning smiley..where is it?

Hilarious story, wishydoo!

I also "broke in" my kids dads' early. In the case of my ex-husband, he got a crash course when DS was 3 months old and I had to have emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder. I spent a week in the hospital. Up until that point, he had only changed an occasional diaper, and had never given DS a bottle because I was breastfeeding. But he and DS did just fine together.

With my DD, my DH took a paternity leave, after I stayed home for 3 months, he stayed home for 3 months. Wonderful bonding time!!

LOL, Wishy. :teeth:
If the shoe fits, he needs to wear it. lol

I didn't leave my h alone with the kids either. He did do babies. He called it babysitting.
Anyway, one of the times I left him alone, he fell asleep and my baby had woke up and got into the bathroom and spread the lotion everywhere. Another time it was nail polish.
It worked, I didn't leave him alone with them much.

For the big, grinning smiley, just type...

: teeth :

...but take out the spaces before and after the word teeth. :teeth:

When our kids were little, my brother David begged us to let the kids spend the night at his house sometime. We were hesitant to let him watch them because he was a bachelor and had zero experience with kids. I think that our concerns were valid because the one time that Sue left the kids with David (at McDonald's while she ran to the ladies room), he gave both the kids ketchup for their fries. A whole lot of ketchup. I guess he must have been paying too much attention to James because Sarah (who was in a high chair) planted the palms of both hands into the ketchup and proceeded to make a total mess of herself and her clothes. David was completely unaware of what was going on until Sue came back to the table. I think that she started laughing hysterically when she saw the mess.

I was involved in watching the kids from day one. I'm not claiming to be as proficient at it as my wife, but I can hold my own with the kids. At least I used to be able to. Now that they are both teens, they might just be able to get the upper hand with me if they teamed up. :teeth:

and he is still walking and breathing??? ;)

I guess I am in the minority, my DH falls asleep at the drop of a hat, and has been known to do it alone with the kids. I did not leave him alone with the kids often when they were babies, now is a different story. If he falls asleep, he best be ready for what might befall him ;) The kids get him good :) :)

DH was once attacked by Teletubbies...he fell asleep while watching the kids and they brought every single Teletubby in the house....plastic ones, stuffed ones, talking ones....and "planted" them all over him. I still can't believe that he can sleep like that. He was still decorated when I got home and of course we have the pictures to commemorate the event!!:D

This was not a babysitting incident, but Towncrier's story reminded me. My brother and his wife didn't have children yet when DS was born. When he was a few months old, my brother lifted him up over his head and ran the baby's head into the ceiling fan. It was running at the time and went thump, thump, thump before he realized what he had done. Of course, our baby screamed, but he was fine. I still tease my brother that our son has never been the same since. LOL!
