I haven't posted because it's been hectic over hear as well.. but your family has been in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm glad that everyone is excited and a happy ending is in store.

How did Todd's birthday celebration go? I looovee my weekends..

Great update on the MK morning, sometimes you post photos and I think to myself: Have ever even seen that? LOL it's funny how much you can miss in those parks.. no matter how many times you've been.

Even tho she was paying attention to Dylan, that's still a nice photo of your family. I like it. On our past trip, FOR THE FIRST TIME, I took photos of the castle with the reflection.. it truly is a beautiful shot.

It usually takes us around an hour to an hour and half to take a bus back to POP.. it can be frustrating.. I try to not be miserable about it....looks like yous had a great day in the Magic Kingdom.

Hi there! Todd's birthday was fun. We just got together with some friends for dinner and had a low key evening. That was all we wanted since life has been so crazy for the past few weeks.

We had a great evening at the MK, and I'm so glad we have some good pictures of it. We usually don't do castle photos either but these ones turned out really nice.

Ha, ha. Funny you mentioned the bus rides. My next update is all about our first bus ride. Not the best experience.

I woke up at 9:00. Dylan had woken up at 7:30 but Todd got up with him so that I could sleep in. This was such a treat for me since I have to get up so early every day when we are at home, since I have to be at work at 7:00 am. This was our reason for having “free days” on our trip… so that we could honestly feel like we could relax and sleep in and not feel like we were missing out on something. It really helps to schedule time to do nothing!

We really had no plan for today since it was a free day, so we discussed all of our options over breakfast. We decided to take Dylan swimming and spend some time by the pool. We never feel like we take advantage of the pool area on our vacations, so we were determined this time around to spend some quality time there.

As soon as we got to the pool, we could see a big difference with Dylan. He was so much more confident than the first day and he started jumping in from the side on his own more often.

Then he found the stairs and all he wanted to do was go up and down the stairs. Apparently, the stairs are the coolest thing ever. He would go down the steps until he stood on the last stair and then he would jump into the water, float out a bit, spin around and kick his way back to the stairs. Then he would start all over. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but we had never seen him do anything like that before, and it was amazing to watch him figure out how to do all of that on his own.

After swimming for a while we went back to the condo and had some lunch. I put Dylan in his pajamas to get ready to take a nap and then I put a load of laundry in the machine. When I found Dylan, he was having another quiet moment out on the patio by himself. This just makes me smile, even now as I look back on it. He is the most active little boy, but it just shows that everyone needs some alone time every now & then. I think he saw my dad out there so much that he understood that you just went out there to sit and watch the ducks.

During his nap, I did the dishes, 2 loads of laundry and showered. Todd did some work on the computer. We had a friend going to our house every day to keep Todd’s business running while we were gone. Since June is one of his busiest months for his business, it was so nice to have someone to rely on so that we could take this trip. Otherwise, we would not have been able to be gone as long as we were.

My parents decided to go shopping after I put Dylan down, so we said we would call them later to see if they wanted to get together.

Dylan woke up at 4:00 and we were all pretty hungry so we decided to have a very early dinner at Miller’s Ale House. I had read about this place on OneTreeHillAddict’s TR and the menu looked right up our alley. So we left at 4:30 and made the short drive over to the restaurant.

The outside of the restaurant is nothing exciting. In fact, we weren’t even sure we were at the right place at first. It is basically a sports bar that is also a restaurant. The inside is a bunch of large booths and a lot of TVs so that you can watch sports while you are eating. The U.S. Open Golf tournament was on while we were there. It’s a really low-key place but the food was really good. And cheap!!!

We were not trying to be healthy during this meal and that is a good thing because there is a lot of fried stuff on the menu. We ended up getting the Loaded Fries and the Hickory Chicken BBQ sandwich to split between the 3 of us. The portions were really big and very tasty.

We all were full from the food, but I had seen pictures of a dessert that I just had to have. It was called Captain Jack’s Hidden Treasure. Um…….yum! That’s all that I can say about this. It was an ice cream cake with cookie crumbles and chocolate syrup. It was HUGE! We all left feeling very satisfied with our meal. The best part about it? The total for the bill was $22.00! That included a soda too. I would definitely recommend this place. It is very affordable and it has a large menu so most people should be able to find something that they like there.

Doesn’t it look amazing? It totally was!

We decided to head out to Fort Wilderness and check it out since I have read so many positive reports about it. I had heard there was a petting zoo and horses, and also about the S’mores with characters, so I thought it would be a fun evening for Dylan. I called my mom to see if they wanted to join us, but they were at the Florida Mall and were not done shopping yet. They also had not had dinner, so we just decided to meet up with them back at the condo later in the evening.

We followed the signs and found Fort Wilderness at about 5:45. I thought that you could just park your car in the parking lot and walk to where everything is. I was mistaken. The security guard told us where to park and then he said we had to take the internal transportation to get out to the Pioneer Hall area. Oookaay. So we go park and get Dylan’s stroller out and we start walking to the Outpost Depot.

Let me just make a side note right now that the heat index on this day was very high. As soon as we got out of the car we could feel the heat and we were trying to get to a shaded area. Since we had been swimming and then stayed inside most of the day, we had no idea how hot it really was outside. If we had known, we might have changed our plans. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

Now I have to say that I was a little excited at this point. I have never ridden a Disney bus before. I read so many other people’s TR’s and they all talk about taking Disney transportation everywhere, and how excited they get at the beginning of their trip when they see their first Disney bus. So I was SO excited to FINALLY ride a Disney bus and have the whole “experience” that I felt like I have been missing out on all of these years by driving our own car everywhere. I had this amazing, mysterious, kind of romanticized vision of a bus ride that only Disney could provide (I couldn’t even type that sentence without busting up laughing at myself now).

We got to the Outpost and there were probably 20 people waiting there as well. We saw from the signs that we needed to get on a bus to the Settlement area. An Orange bus pulled up and it said “Settlement” so we walked that way. So did every other person at the Outpost. People were pushing and mobbing the doors to the bus, so we just stood back and watched because it was obvious that we were not getting on this bus. As we are standing there, another Orange bus pulls up right behind it. No one seemed to see this bus (as they were all frantically trying to get on the first one) so we walked over and got on.

Every seat on the bus was taken but there was no one standing, so we collapsed the stroller and stood at the front near the driver. I was holding on to the stroller and all of our bags and Todd was holding Dylan. We were waiting to get moving and all of a sudden this massive wave of people start cramming onto the bus. We have never been to Fort Wilderness before so we had no idea how long we would be on the bus before we needed to get off, so we stayed near the front. The bus was pretty full when the doors closed.

Our driver warned us in the front that she did not have a radio that was working, so she was going to have to shout all of the stops. She didn’t want to scare Dylan so she wanted to prepare us that she would be yelling. I thought that was nice of her to warn us. She looked like a nice little old lady, and I thought it was cute that she was the driver of this big bus. So then she puts the bus in gear…..and guns it! I don’t mean, rolls a little bit and then picks up speed. I’m talking about a foot slammed down on the gas pedal. Everyone that was standing was thrown backward and I almost fell over onto the person next to me. We take a corner at a pretty good speed and she kept accelerating. Then, there is a bus stop, and she slams on the brakes just as hard as she slammed on the gas. I looked over at Todd and he is standing there clinging to Dylan in one arm and trying to hang on to a strap overhead. My eyes were probably as wide as his because we both just stared at each other like, “Did that really happen?”

At the stop, two people got off and there was a big crowd of people waiting to get on. More & more people kept squeezing in until every space was full. They were even standing in the steps of the front door. She closed the door and slammed on the gas again….do you see where this is going? She was a psychotic driver!! At each stop she would slam on her brakes, yell the number of the stop and then gun it again. A couple of times there were people in the back trying to get off and she would take off, so we all would start shouting at her to stop to let them off. At every stop there were more people waiting to get on and there was just no more room. It was actually a pretty dangerous situation for Todd to be holding Dylan because he almost dropped him a couple of times due to the speed that she was taking the turns at.

By the end of the ride, Todd & I were both cracking up laughing because it was all we could do. It made me laugh every time we made eye contact because the whole thing was so out of control. We were captive prisoners of a granny with a lead foot. Not quite the Disney vision that I had in my head.

We finally made it to our destination and we got off the bus to a blast of heat. At least the bus had been air conditioned. We walked towards the building and it is just slammed with people everywhere. I was totally confused and we just followed the crowd. I kept trying to figure out why there were so many people around. On the side of the path were a couple of horses that were drinking water from a trough. We stopped to let Dylan watch them for a while and to size up the situation around us.

There were little booths outside that people were shopping at and a line of people along the road. And that’s when I saw that they were just starting to let people in for the Hoop Dee Doo Review dinner and it all started to make sense. We had arrived just as they were seating for the show and all of those people trying to get on the busses were running late for their ADRs. So basically, we picked the busiest time of the day to try to visit this resort that I had heard was so peaceful. We are the experts at bad timing, and this evening was no exception.

I walked up to a ticket window and I asked where the petting zoo was. The guy working the window looked confused and said that there was no petting zoo and that it had been gone for 2 years. I asked about the horse rides and he said they stopped at 5:00. I was really disappointed because I was hoping to get pictures of Dylan with some animals, so we walked away and discussed what to do. We decided to look around for a while since we had ridden the bus from He** to get all the way out there. We walked past the main building and saw some more horses that were used for carriage rides. We stood in the shade (it was sooooo hot!) and people-watched, and what an eye full we got that night!

I will be careful with the way that I phrase this next section because I do not mean to offend anyone. There was quite a different type of people out at this resort than anywhere else that we had seen. I’m not sure if it is because it is a campground and people actually camp there, but it was just….interesting. I will give you an example. We walked past a girl sitting on a bench. I did not see her, but Todd got this weird look on his face and said, “That was quite a picture.” I asked what he saw and he said, “I just need to take a picture so that I can show you. I can’t explain it.” This is VERY unlike Todd, so of course I tell him to go take the picture.

He comes back and is very proud of himself that he was very sneaky in obtaining the picture. He said he pretended to take a picture of a tree and then lowered the camera really quickly and snapped it. I was laughing trying to picture him being all stealthy. He shows me a picture of a woman sitting on a bench and she is dressed in very revealing clothes. Short, short, short skirt. A tank top barely containing her upper region. Didn’t look like a shower had been taken in a few days. But perched on top of her head was a very large, very sparkly tiara. My words written here have not done justice to fully explain this image, but I tried my best. In the end, we came to the conclusion that anyone can feel like a Princess when they are at Disney. We still talk about her and she is referred to as the “trashy princess.” Out of respect to her (& to the fact that she might be a relative of someone on the Dis ) I will not be posting her picture. But let me tell you it was a sight to behold. As we were walking past her to return to the bus area, I saw her in person and realized that she was a teenager. In the photo she looks like a much older person. I felt bad for her, at the same time as I could not believe her parents let her dress like that! All I could say is …. Wow.

By this point, the heat was taking its toll on us. We should have studied a map before we went to Fort Wilderness because we could not figure out where anything was. In addition to all of the people wandering around and there were no animals for Dylan to pet, we decided to cut our losses and leave. We could not get to the bus station fast enough. I think we both were saying, “I can’t believe that so many people like it here.”

We could see that no buses were at the stop when we got over there so we took a detour to the horse stables where the pony rides were. Most of the horses were in the back of the area, but a few were still out for us to see. I really like the Tri-Circle-D logo that was on the sign. It never made sense to me until I saw the sign. The horses were really pretty and we will have to bring Dylan back another time so that he can ride them.

We walked back to the bus stop where the line was growing and there was no bus in sight. It was incredibly hot and there was not a lot of shade so we were standing in the direct sun. We probably waited 15 minutes for any bus to come along. We decided that it didn’t matter what bus came, we were going to get on it as long as it said Outpost on the sign. I can’t even explain how miserable it was standing there and I was really worried because Dylan was turning bright red and his hair was all sweaty. Poor little guy.

A bus finally came and we got on it. We managed to get one seat so I sat down on it and held Dylan in my lap while Todd stood with the stroller. Again, the bus was packed and everyone looked exhausted from the heat. Just our luck, the bus had a lot more stops than the last bus that we were on, so it took almost twice as long to get back to the Outpost. There was a child that was slightly younger than Dylan sitting right next to us that was screaming his head off for the entire bus ride. The parents were not doing much to calm him down and when someone asked if he wasn’t feeling well, the mom just said, “No, he’s just hungry.” I was getting angry because this little boy was not being comforted at all. Then, this couple that was standing up next to them were talking to him. Then they started using their fans that squirted water on him. At first he screamed and then he started calming down. By the time they got off the bus, he was doing much better thanks to these total strangers. I told Todd that in the midst of all of this chaos, it was wonderful to see people who wanted to try to help these people, and since they were in WDW it was not weird for them to start squirting water on this kid.

I have to say that by the time we got off the bus, we just wanted to get out of there! I was so disappointed because I had been looking forward to this great evening of petting animals and seeing a campfire with S’mores. Instead we had 2 insane bus rides, mobs of people, no animals, and the worst heat we had encountered so far on the trip. We both left saying that we would not be returning anytime in the near future. Looking back on it now, we obviously have a slanted mental image of what it really is, and it is not fair to judge the place based on our experience. I know it is not like that all of the time. In fact, we laugh about the whole experience now because it was SO bad and it was a fluke situation. I have decided that it was the most out of control 1 ½ hours of our entire trip. At the time, it was hard for us to understand why other people thought that place was so great. But I remember looking out the windows on those crazy bus rides and thinking how pretty the campgrounds were, and how the landscaping was very unique to anything else that we had seen. I’m sure we will go back someday, and I just hope that we have a better outcome than this time.

Sorry about your less than ideal first Disney bus ride. It's actually kind of neat to be on the buses with only 1 or 2 other families and I'm thinking maybe that kind of ride would have better lived up to your expectations. This being said, we have a running joke in my family that the Disney bus is in fact, the first thrill ride of the day.
Fort Wilderness has never really struck as a "must visit" and now I think it's safe to say I don't feel like I'm missing out. I was shocked when you said that the petting zoo was gone, and had been for 2 years doesn't everyone on the dis still talk about it?
I hope you found a way to turn the night around!

Holy Moly, What an update!! Rather crazy to say the least!!!
Some of the diz bus drivers are not safe drivers! All of our experiences
with disney bus drivers were not good by any means!! For one thing I
do not understand allowing people to STAND on the busses, it simply
is not safe and safety should always be FIRST!!!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Ft Wilderness. I did the horse rides there a few years ago and it was a lot of fun, so hopefully you will get a chance to go back and do that one day. We went on one of the first trail rides of the morning so the resort was peaceful and hardly anyone was on the busses.

Also, my rule is that on vacation you can and should eat whatever you want!! I mean, unless you have a special diet or medical condition that you need to follow...(I didn't want flames so I had to explain myself, haha)!

Since we just got back I can tell u that the bus rides aren't exactly as magical as u would like them to be however, we went horseback riding at Fort wilderness and also had some bad luck with the buses.. waited 35 min for a bus to AK when we waited no more than 10 back at pop for n e bus!

Hope u found something go to do for the night!

I was so happy that we tried that place based on the recommendation of someone on the Dis. We never would have tried it otherwise, and I know that we will be going back again.

The bus ride was an adventure, and it's funny to think back on it now. When I told Todd that I was writing about this day, he started laughing and said, "that's going to be a good one." So it's funny now but in that moment, it was a pretty tough time. I was shocked about the petting zoo too. I'm wondering if the guy didn't know what he was talking about. It seems like recently people have been talking about it, so I was surprised that it didn't exist all of a sudden.

The standing on the bus didn't bother me as much as how many people they pack in there and allow that many to stand. We were packed in like sardines and if one person had fallen down, they would have knocked over a few others. The celeb is still a couple of days away but we are getting closer!

A friend of mine at work thinks it's fun to take pictures of people that just strike her the wrong way. She shows me some pretty tragic pictures of people doing/wearing things in public that are SO embarrassing. She was so proud of me when I told her about his picture.

I think we would try FW again for the horse rides. It was our fault that we didn't research the information better. I just thought it would be this easy thing to drive up, find the animals, etc. Now I know better! And I agree....vacations are for indulging yourself. Eat what you want!

The trashy princess is going down in the history books with our family. Funny thing is that she has no idea! LOL. I agree about getting back into your own car. Beside the A/C, it is nice to have the solitude from the crowds. We are not big outdoors people either (which is a shame considering where we live), but I just didn't understand what FW was all about. I think if we had been more mentally prepared, we wouldn't have been as unhappy. It was all just too confusing and overwhelming at the time.

I'm so happy that I have been able to catch Dylan's "breaks" on camera. Those are precious photos to me because he is such a good boy and we are blessed by that!

Yeah, I have no romanticized feelings about Disney buses anymore! Having your own transportation is the way to go, in my opinion.

Heyyy! I have been wondering if you had gone on your trip yet. Did you have a good time? Are you doing a TR? I'm glad that you got to do the horseback riding. I have NEVER done that in my whole life, so I was disappointed that we missed out.

There's no petting zoo at Fort Wilderness?! Oh my, I think I may have been one that encouraged you to check it out. I was SURE it was still there, but after checking it out, it seems all of the petting zoo animals have been moved to Rafiki's Planet Watch Affection Section in AK. So Sorry!

I've been on a few buses that were crowded like that and they're no fun. Sounds like your driver was a transfer from the Richard Petty driving experience!!

Give Ft. Wilderness another chance someday. The first HDDR show is at 5, so maybe mid morning or early afternoon would work better to see some horses, etc.

That was a great update! sorry to hear about your crazy bus rides! We were pretty lucky in that a majority of our bus rides were not full. I am also surprised that no one got up to let you or Todd sit down with Dylan. the couple of times we had to stand on the bus, someone offered us a seat so we could sit with our DD. Towards the end of the trip, it became more challenging since she didn't want to sit still on the bus and just wanted to run and play. I felt bad for anyone riding the bus with us those days as she would throw little tantrums or screamed when we told her she had to stay seated so she wouldn't get hurt. The joys of parenting. I loved the pic of Dylan sitting out on your deck. he is a cutie patootie!

Well, we go home every weekend because we're only about an 1 hour and 45 minutes away. I'm just used to seeing him every day.

Aw, I hope Dylan gets better! My little guy had a bad fall a few weeks ago...ran into the corner of the side table by the couch. Hit him right by his eye, so he had a good bruise!

Wow - what an update! I can't believe that bus driver. I was thinking to myself while reading about your bad experience on the busses that I hope this didn't discourage you to try Disney transportation in the future. We've had wonderful (and some not-so-wonderful) experiences relying totally on the WDW transportation but the good outweigh the bad.


I felt bad for you that Dylan didn't get to pet any animals or enjoy a pony ride but you all were real troopers regardless
