It's a good thing for all pet owners to learn how to check vitals on a dog, much like you would do on a human. Temperature, hydration level, shock, pulse, all are easy to learn. Then, when you call the vet, you can say, "She has a 102 degree temp, skin's taking three seconds to snap back, gums are pale, and pulse is...". Doesn't make you a vet, but helps you be more aware of your pet.
