9 month old puppy vomiting yellow frothy stuff- going to vet in the am-help?

Our sweet Paws started vomiting last night and refused to eat dinner- now it is 24 hours later and she still has not eaten and really is not taking much water either. She has vomited 2 other times now and it is bright yellow (bile?) and frothy- no food since she has not eaten I suppose.

She is acting a bit lethargic and has not urinated since noon today (it is now 6pm, long time for her).

I told DS10, who is super worried as we all are, that I will take her to the vet to get checked and rehydrated, if necessary, in the the morning after I drop kids at school.

What could this be? I googled and found maybe Gastro-enteritis or acid reflux? Then other sources of info say it's just what dogs do... I don't buy that tho. The dog seems to not feel well. Any similar experiences out there so I can assure DS that his dog will eventually be okay?

Hi there, I'm not a vet or anything, but I do know a trick to get your pup to take water. If you have some canned chicken that's perfect, just drain the juice from the can into the water bowl. The pup will smell the meaty scent and drink the water. Alternatively you could just boil some meat or chicken and add the (cooled) liquid to his water bowl. Really important to get him rehydrated as much as possible until you can get to the vet. Good Luck!

My dog does that in the heat. He's older and has a very hard time with heat, even in the air condition. Try to get her to drink. You can give her a bit of clear pedialite so she doesn't get dehydrated.

She probably hasn't gone potty and is lethargic b/c she hasn't ate or drank in a while. Is it hot in your area today?

How long have you had the puppy? Has he/she been in contact with other puppies? Has the puppy had all the Parvo shots?

Do you have an animal ER near you? Or call you vet for an emergency number.

Our dog had those same symptoms and it ended up being an obstructed bowel. If we had waited until morning to take him in, he wouldn't have made it.

Not to alarm you, but I'd be more than worried.

Thanks for the quick info- no diahrrea, she has had all shots and no exposure to other dogs in last week- it has been VERY hot here the last two days. We just got her to drink about 10 large drinks of her water and she laid back down. Right before she vomits (3 times total now in 24 hours) she does this urrga noise and her stomach kind of rolls around a little just like ours when we have stomach upset. She seems very human when she does this. Odd, but that's what it looks like to us.

I did think of one thing that is off her regular schedule- DD and i bought her a new kind of dog bone treats... think Milk-Bone, but a different brand. They seem high quality, but very different from what we usually give her so maybe they have upset her tummy?

I agree that this may be an emergency.

I have no idea if this is the case for you, but some dogs have a predispostion toward their stomach turning a flip (like literally upside down) so it kinks on each end, creating a blockage, and puppies in particular can get it. It's fatal without surgery.

For instance, my neighbor was given strict instructions by her breeder that her German Shepherd puppy was not supposed to be allowed large drinks of water while excersizing because the water can sway the stomach till it flips over. Once the dog turns a certain age, it's supposed to be allowed a little more water, but it's particularly suceptible as a puppy.

The symptoms you describe definately don't sound like something that will just pass - I would at the very least find an emergency vet hospital and call. Or find some vet (any vet you can) that has a 24 hour paging system to at least ask if your puppy will make it till tomorrow. It's definately a gamble, and the odds don't sound great.

Last week our 2 year old mini daschund acted funny. She just seemed "off" We leave food and water down all day, and she's a night eater, but she didn't seem to eat normally. She also wasn't jumping or barking like normal, jsut laying around. If she had been vomiting I would have taken her in. Did the dog vomit after the water? I would do my best to keep her hydrated.

I'm sorry that your furbaby is sick. I'm not usually concerned if my dogs vomit up bile a couple of times but the fact that she's not eating or drinking after 24 hours is concerning. And puppies can get dehydrated quickly. It could be any number of things causing this. I really think that you need to get her to a vet to make sure there isn't anything more serious going on.

Good luck and don't forget to update us on her condition after the vet sees her.

I have a dachsund who does this all the time. We have been to the vet numerous times and if she does not have food in her stomach at all times, especially when it is hot, she will do it. We have to leave food out constantly, and of course plenty of fresh water.

She is now on a better food, it has occured less frequently (1 time every other month, vs 5-6 times a week) Your pup is probably dehydrated so thats why shes lethargic. I have also fed Poppy chicken baby food to get food in her.

Both of our dogs have been vomiting with the heat the last few days if that reassures you at all. Duncan in particular has been heaving and there is really not much you can do about it. He ate dinner last night, walked into the next room and just threw it all back up. Nasty!!!

The yellow color usually indicates that it is stomach bile because Paws has nothing else in his/her tummy. Frothy? Sounds like what ours are doing to. I would keep encouraging the water but if you have any chicken and white rice available, I would feed her/him VERY small amounts of this as it is bland and will set in the tummy easier. Follow up with the vet if it doens't stop would be my advice but I think you'll find it is heat related.

As an aside, for ANY pet owners reading this, please make sure your pets are vaccinated and getting all their treatments for heartworm and flea/tick. Our Duncan who gets all of this has somehow been exposed to Lyme's Disease and we have a long road ahead of us. How this happened with him being on Frontline is beyond me but it happened!

I wouldn't wait until the morning. I would take him to the emergency vet if there's one in your area. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Sounds exactly like when my dog Ruby has a flare up of pancreatitis. Do you feed your puppy alot of people food? Some dogs are prone to this and feeding them people food can cause this to happen. We don't give her ANY people food any more because it causes her to have flare ups.

My vet recommended to give Ruby half a pepcid when she throws up or starts to look like she doesn't feel good and that helps her alot...We also feed her alittle bit of cooked rice and canned chicken for a couple days because its bland and won't upset the tummy. Ruby loves it; she thinks she's getting a treat! We also feed her Wellness dog food- it doesn't have alot of the junk/fillers that other dog foods do and its gentle on the tummy- we feed her the fish/sweet potato formula and she barely ever gets an upset tummy or flare ups now.

I second going to an emergency vet. If nothing else you don't want your pup to get dehydrated. Hope she feels better soon.

Sorry to hear your puppy doesn't feel well. My pup has had many tummy issues we have been thru all kinds of treatments with two different vets. then one day a vet tech pulled us to the side and told us to give him ice cubes to chew and some ice in his water and to buy pumpkin in a can, like you would use in a pumpkin pie. make sure it is just pumpkin no sugar or spices. 1-2 tablespoons. It works wonders anytime he has an issue now i give him pumpkin and lots of ice cubes. no more late night visits to the vet. Good Luck!!

My dog has been vomiting the last few days (once a day) she ate a ton of grass and it came right up, she still acts really hungry so I'm not too alarmed. Some breeds can get bloat or a twisted stomach and die from it. I would probably call the emergency vet and see what they say.

Have you tried Pepto? We have one doxie that will occasionally suffer from gastro issues. We give her a dose of Pepto and next day she is back to her old piggy self.

We had a dog who use to do this whenever it was hot, all summer, as he got older he was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrom. That's when it was both ends. We now have a puppy 10 months old that is doing it. I think it's the heat that sets it off. I'm not rushing her to the vet. But she only does it once and she settles down and seems to feel better. She's done it a few times this summer. It's exactly like you describe yellow and frothy. The canned chicken and rice is what our vet reccommends also for upset tummies.

I am not a dog owner, but I do have cats and I had one that was doing what you are describing your Paws is doing.... I decided to wait til the next morning to take her to the vets and the vet said I should have taken her to an ER vet... I know that dogs and cats are different but if either go without food/water for too long they can develop what is called fatty liver (it is where the liver starts to digest the fat in order to get some nutrients) this is not good because if the liver gets to clogged up then it can fail and we,or animals, cannot live without the liver. hi first of all i hope your dog is eating and not throwing up anymore. I have a 6 yr old pom who had the same symptoms your dog had and it turned out that he was in renal failure. im not a vet but a 2nd yr resident i noticed that my dog who usually barks all the time and eats everything but for some strange reason stopped eating and drinking and was throwing up bile. i took him to an emergency vet because it was a sunday and paid a 600 dollars for them to give him a sub-q ringers solution and an in house blood test. the blood test showed he had an elevated creatinine level and bun, which is usually a sign of renal failure.
I took him home and when we got home he was drinking tons of water, literally sleeping next to the water bowl. when i woke up the next morning i noticed he wasnt peeing and had drank the whole bowl of water!!. i called in sick at work and took him to my vet on the way he had a seizure and i thought he was going to die. when i got to the vet he was almost half dead and the vet gave him an iv. the dog perked up and i had to leave him in intensive care. the vet told me that if i had not taken him to the emergency vet and gave him the fluids i would have woke up to a dead dog. Thank god after the iv flush my dogs kidney function came back his blood tests have came back and his levels are almost back to normal.
Now the point if your dog is sick especially small dogs and puppies they can deteriorate very quickly. especially puppies who can develop hypoglycemia if they dont eat for more than a day. I completely agree with disneylover who made the post before me. please make an apointment with your vet and get him checked asap. also check your puppies tongue and gums make sure they arent pale because thats a sign that something is very seriously wrong. dont give your puppy any medication like pepto without the consent of your vet. i thought like some people on this thread and thought my dog was just suffering from the heat but my vet said if that was the case he would be panting and i didnt see that you wrote that as a symptom.
