8 days of migraines in a row, my time of the month won't end and I caught what my kids had back to back, first a cold from DD and now a cough from DS. I think my Thyroid surgery last month totally messed me up, my body is weak and stressed and not working like it's supposed to. Please tell me my body is going to snap out of this soon because I just want to cry.. what a mess

 Your body will snap out of this soon. Your body is still trying to heal from your surgery, has little left to fight all of the other bugs floating around. It will get better! I hope you feel better soon!

 I feel for you... I think I know where you are coming from.

8 days is crazy. Do you have an appointment coming up?

I see my surgeon next week, and have mixed emotions. I can't wait, but then again I am a nervous wreck about it. I have too many headaches, and I don't think they should still bet his severe.

there some great vitamin tablets called migralief.

i get mine shipped as you can only get them in the States. Taking one twice a day plus cutting out chocolate has really helped me:

There is a virus going around that causes bad headaches. It feels like you have a really bad hangover for about a week. It was going around my son's class. He gave it to everyone in our house.
Hope you feel better soon.

even if you have a history of migraines, if you have one or what seems like several individual ones lasting multiple days in a row CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR-even if it's just by phone to touch bases. this is esp. true if your tried and true migraine meds are not working.

migraines can and do cause strokes-it is estimated that over 25% of strokes in people under the age of 45 are caused by migraines. the rate is estimated to be around the same for migraine caused cerebral infarctions (for women on the pill, the risk of stroke among those with a history of migraines is around 17 times the the norm).

i was unaware of these statistics until AFTER i had 2 strokes, later determined to been caused by migraines that i kept trying to home treat for over 48 hours.

believe me when i tell you that taking the time to contact your treating physician regarding this is well worth the time.

is there anyway you could have been exposed to West Nile virus? I had it in 2003 and it causes a headache-worse than the worst migraine i have EVER had and i had them for years before i was smart enough to realize i needed to get off BC pills. For about 10 days i litterally thought i was going to Die from the headache. then i woke up one morning with a pinprick rash-like roseola on a baby-that didnt itch-and thank good the headache was gone.

I went in to see me GP but of course he wasn't free so I saw his PA yesterday morning. I just called the Dr and asked him if my Thyroid could be doing this to me, we'll see what he says when he calls me back

Thank you for the suggestion but Vitamins of any kind give me unbearable migraines. It has been suggested that there is something in the filler that bugs me or just the high doses all at once. I do wish I could give that stuff a try though. No chocolate here, it is not my friend : (

I didn't know about the virus but that could certainly be something to consider. I'll keep an eye on my temp, thanks for the heads up. Are there other symptoms?

I already have 2 spots on my brain that could have been strokes... or not. Apparently the spots are common in migraine sufferers. But, i do not seem to have any other symptoms other than the pain. But now that you mention it, the PA from yesterday didn't do a Neuro exam. I ALWAYS get a Neuor exam. Time to call my retired RN MIL over from next door, she worked with head trauma, she's know.

Hmmm, I don't think I've done anything that could have exposed me to something like that. I don't have a fever though but again, I'll keep checking. This sort of thing is one of the biggest threats to migraine sufferers. Once a headache reaches level 10 how on earth can we be expected to figure out how its different from other headaches because that's the one question that I always get asked by Dr's and also the one thing I can't answer. I get about 10-15 a month but even for me, 8 days in a row is ridiculous. Usually they are spread out with clusters near my period which is why I'm thinking that whatever is dragging out my time of the month could be dragging out my migraines.

its misquito borne-so one bite is all it takes-and you might not even notice. I didnt until i got the diagnosis and thought about where i had been.

Worst case scenario, can you go to the ER and get IV pain killers? I had to do that last Saturday.

I had my thyroid out December 31st last year. 6 months prior to that I had cervical spine fusion. The first surgery was very hard to get over and we expected the thyroid surgery to be easier to get over. Surprise - I have been having a lot of issues since my thyroid was taken out, and have not felt healthy since, or even before it was done.

Give yourself time to heal and take it easy. I believe they use steroids in the iv during the surgery and that has lowered your immune system. Keep your chin up.

Also check your diet - have you been eating peanuts or peanut butter? I had a month long migraine a few years ago and it took that long to figure out that the peanuts I ate every day for protein was causing it! Another trigger people tend to forget about it is pizza.

Okay that was my feel better and take care of yourself talk.

Now is my complaint. I can totally feel for you because I have had the absolute worst headache of my life for three weeks now. It is very different from my regular monthly migraines and after 5 days of horrible pain I had a ct scan. It was clear. I have been tested for menopause and hormone issues. All normal. Neuro exam: normal. I do see my neurologist again tomorrow. Aside from the normal pain of the headache, I am VERY sensitive to light and walking outside sends sharp pains through my head. As you see by my ticker I am going to WDW in just under two weeks.

So, if you get rid of your headache please let me know how. Until then we can comisserate together!

Oh, and my neuro did tell me that Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Magnesium and Chromium can all help migraines. I picked up B2 that day and have had no changes, but something happened last night because the pain is significantly worse today.

Here's hoping all of us will feel better VERY quickly!

 So sorry - yuck! I hope you can get rid of that migraine and everything else. The one and only good thing about being sick is that I always so appreciate feeling NORMAL again afterward.

Sorry for the long post, it seems the caffeine in my Fioricet kicked in

I'm not much of the outdoorsy type and I do suffer from high frequency migraines so I'm leaning towards something biochemical as the most likely thing. Not to say it couldn't be something else, I do always worry about that. Still, I think a fever or symptoms other than strictly migraine stuff would be present and all my migraine stuff is front and center from the vampire like hate of light to my bionic sense of smell. Last night I could smell the tiny bit of bacon fat left in the dinner pan soaking in the sink from both the top floor and the basement, it was so bad I had to get up and wash it out and remove the garbage can from the house.

Worst case scenario, can you go to the ER and get IV pain killers? I had to do that last Saturday.

That did cross my mind but uggh, I can't stand being anywhere near an ER with a migraine. When I go in I just want to make sure I'm not having a stroke or something serious and all they do is treat me like a drug seeking addict. They are so disrespectful and it's just so awful to be so defenseless against it. I don't know how you were able to stand it and I can't help but wonder how long they left you suffering before they began to treat you...

Someone else like me. For the first 20 years of my life i didn't know that the frequency of my migraines was weird, I assumed everyone who said they got them had them as often. 3 weeks is awful for you, I hate when it happens... I'm still at week 1 so I've got some room still. That happened to me a few times which is why I'm not headed to the Neurologist yet. Once when I switched my floor detergent to Pine Sol from Clorox because the store was out of it... I couldn't even smell it but my brain could tell. Once it happened from a new conditioner, always happens when I paint the house and once it happened when my kids were babies and i was absentmindedly tasting their pop-tarts off their baby trays. The hard part is figuring out which little detail is is that triggers the trouble. I think it's probably my body being out of wack because of the prolonged period but I'm no Dr so I'm just guessing. I think I'll call the Endocrinologist tomorrow and see if headaches are related in any way... could be I'm just different.

Your post did remind me that I did stupidly have a bit of peanut butter today which is probably why it got so much worse. I had to eat something with the Z-Pac they put me on yesterday so I had some toast and jelly and a corner of bread with PB&J for the protein. I wasn't thinking of the PB because it isn't normally a trigger for me but with my head already so raw I suppose it could have been the thing that made my head hurt so much my eyes were just streaming. It's so weird, some kind of neurological response to pain I think, over the past few days when I am in an intolerable amount of pain my eyes just stream like I am crying but there is no emotion with it.

Pizza, really??? Ack, I am not strong enough to cook so DH was going to pick up a pizza for us tonight and ther is a chance I could have tried to eat some later on. Good thing you said something, I think I'll just have some grits with salt instead.

I do really hope you feel better. Have they given you anything to try? As weird as it sounds I do generally have success with switching to a strictly Atkins diet. My headaches strangely disappear when all I have is plain meats and lettuce as long as I avoid Equal and stuff like that. I know Atkins isn't known for it or anything but I did notice the strange side effect of no headaches a few years ago and it's been pretty consistent. Thanks for reminding me, I know what I'm going to do tomorrow

You are absolutely right! The one thing my headaches have given me is an extraordinary amount of compassion for people who have to live with pain. Whenever a particularly long bout like this ends i always end up in a REALLY good mood, it keeps me humble, grateful & aware of the force of nature:goodvibes Right now things stink but it won't last forever and that's something to be grateful for, not everyone is that lucky.

With the virus, you will not run a fever. Just horrible headache, body ache, dizzy, off balance, seem out of it, nauseous(but no vomiting). It feels like you have a really bad hangover /are drunk for about a week.

Peanuts are a huge trigger for me - even eating 1 is migraine city for me. That could be part of it. Have you tried to treat with meds? IF so you may be getting rebound headaches. Have you been drinking enough fluids? You could be dehydrated which is perpetuating the problem.

Go to the ER or an Urgent Care and ask for a shot or IV of a triptan like Imitrex and IV fluids.

I hope you get some relief soon! Have you talked to your doctor about preventatives?

So now it's time for my brain to do it's own bizarre little version of "Sundowning" where everything gets much more intense for a while but then usually settles when the night settles in. I can't stand it, I wish a Dr could tell me why it happens because I'm curious but none has ever even shown the slightest interest. I'm just stuck with it...

I really think I need to find a Rock Star Neurologist who studies Migraines with an interest in how they effect Cognitive issues, maybe also an interest in the spots on my brain??? If anyone knows of any please let me know... there must be someone in NYC or Philly. I've made peace with the fact this is just the way I was born but i do get worried over the possibility of long term damage... so much pain so often with the addition of spots on my brain must mean something is happening, and it can't be good.

::yes:: the headaches need to be broken up to prevent your brain from becoming hypoxic/ hypoxicemia and preventing a stroke! Hope that you are feeling better:hug:

AKKKK, that is a term no-one ever mentioned to me before ut I looked it up and it is related. With 2 spots on my brain you would think some Dr at some point might have felt it was worth mentioning. Tomorrow I will try to find someone who can help me figure out a good way to deal with my headaches when the reach this on-going stage. All these years I just let it go because the Dr's were only concerned if they were 'different', this isn't exactly different, just long... I mention the length but no-one ever took notice and addressed it.

I'm not ok with taking Imitrex stuff all the time but after reading about that I'm thinking there might be certain circumstances where giving my brain a break is the more important concern.... but wait those are constrictors aren't they? They might not be a good choice for me... not my place to decide, it's time to get a GOOD Dr. Sheesh, how come I can never find a Neurologist who is willing to explain anything? I hate the whole "need to know' mentality, it doesn't help anyone. I need an action plan like my kids have for Asthma that says : If A happens do B, If C happens do D, If E happens do F.

I agree about the virus going around with severe headache that lasts for a week. If your body is worn down, it might be hitting you a bit harder. Hope you feel much better soon!:wizard:
