Ours is a little bit of a unique situation. DH is older than I, so if you talk about cradle robber, he is. :rotfl2: There's almost 20 yrs between us. I struggled with that a bit, but my DGma kept bugging me about what difference does age make. What did I know at that time, I was only 24. Sooo, he finally wore me down, proposed to me on the sunny beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula and I said yes. Hotel staff was so moved that they arranged a wedding for us right there. DH thinks it was b/c he looks like Tommy Lee Jones. :confused3 Any way, I was torn b/c I've always dreamt of a wedding, but it just felt so right. So, we took the plunge in Mexico, came home and announced our engagement and then planned a wedding. Technically, my marriage license is dated 1/1/97 but my family thinks it's 10/19.:rolleyes1 We had a DF who is a minister perform the second ceremony. To this day only 6 people in my life know.:rolleyes1 But I know my secret is safe here.:rotfl2:

What a great story!

Cool, another member of the secret marriage club. Anybody else besides us two?

We had to keep our first marriage secret b/c my wife's Puerto Rican Catholic grandparents would have murdered me in my sleep. We couldn't even let on to them we were living together even though her parents were fine. (She was worried about her Dad's reaction -- but his response was 'he's paying half the rent, right?" -- he was happy to not have to pay her full rent anymore. :rotfl:)

Whoa, that is a pretty big secret! :scared1:

Our story isn't nearly as romantic/etc. We actually were divorced.... seperated during the pregnancy of our oldest, divorce couldn't be final until after she was born, divorce final when she was 2mo old, back together 2 months after that. But I wouldn't remarry him for awhile. we lived as married (we had the same last name/etc. obviously) but I was askered to go thru a divorce again and such. So I made him beg me for a couple of years before I'd marry him again. ;)
Funny but true story- he had child support taken out of his check even after we were REMARRIED (and even while living together that entire time. He'd hand me his paycheck every week and then a week later I'd get the part in the mail that was his child support out of that same check he'd already handed me. :rotfl: ). It would cost too much to get the child support STOPPED ($500 was a lot to us back then) and so the child support continued well into our 2nd marriage until he changed jobs and apparently it didn't follow him (wage garnishment for child support to me) to the next job- that he's still at now.
Well the divorce was expensive- and we actually paid BOTH our lawyers off while already back together.... and I didn't want to go down the road my parents did of divorcing and remarrying shortly after only to divorce again (they did that 3 times). So I waited before marrying him again- but it was only in paper/legally... we were still living together as married.

see? Not as romantic. LOL

Nope.........our engagement story will have to wait for the cruise..........way too good not to be told in person........... way, way tooo good !!!!

Mark
Oh man. Telling it that way some of us are BOUND to miss it. Unless you plan on going around with a list marking off the names of the people you have told!

Hello folks...

... just ducking in for a few minutes before I gotta ru off again... and I can see folks appearantly sharing proposal stories...

Ours was over dish washing. We had just had a dinner with a few friends and I asked my spouse... "isn't that something?... Dave and Amber are gettin' married, Dave and Catherin, Ted and Judy too... and Dave and Jennifer... and so on... and then I asked - what do you think ... you suppose we should get married?"... and she just froze ... and looked at me and said... "... what?... is that it?".... I said... "???? what were you expectin'?".... and she said... "... you do have ring don't you?".... and I said... " ... I need a ring???"... she rolled her eyes and said... "... you've at least called my father, havn't you?"... and I said ... "... what? I have to ask him too???".

Part 2 of the proposal story...

... so she says... "you better call my Dad and ask him "...

... so I called and when Mom and Dad come on the line I say...

..." I'd like to ask for your permission to marry Alicia"....

... and it seemed like a really long silence ensued...

:confused3

So part 3 of my story
Conclusion...

teenage_girl_talking_phone_lg_nwm.gif

So... it was not really THAT long a silence ... but it sure FELT that way...

... and Dad asks... "... have you asked her yet?..."

... and I thought silently < NO - NO - NO! You're NOT supposed to ask ME any questions! > then the thought flashed into my mind... <don't hesitate>....

... SO I said... "Yes, I have"... again ... more silence....

and then he says.... "well, what did she say?"...

I was thinking silently <No - No - No!!! Not another question!>

And I then told him she had already accepted... she said YES

then he embarked on a long "welcome to the family" talk...

It ended on a curious note... the LAST thing he had to say was another QUESTION...

He asked... at the end... "... now are you SURE you can handle her?"

and I said.... < ... >

You're gonna have to get that part out of me ON the cruise!

<chuckles>

To this day only 6 people in my life know.:rolleyes1 But I know my secret is safe here.:rotfl2:

So you think . . . We have "two" wedding dates, too, and get them confused every year . . LOL. DH does his best to keep me straight. Sounds like keeping it a secret helps.

(She was worried about her Dad's reaction -- but his response was 'he's paying half the rent, right?" -- he was happy to not have to pay her full rent anymore. :rotfl:)

We were going to tell our immediate family. Started out with his mom, who is like another mother to me, I the daughter she never had. She had a FIT. She felt like she was duped. Turns out that DHs bro eloped when he was 16 and still lived at home for over a year before his mom found the wedding license while putting away laundry.:scared1: After that reaction, I dared not speak. Our families were always supportive. It's just my dear Dad has a very practical side to things and I'd never hear the end of the money I 'wasted' on the wedding.:confused3

and J.R. - C'mon - you can tell us the story :confused3

Ok, but you cannot tell Janie I told you. I don't think she is lurking on this thread. She doesn't like me to tell the story.

We were both working on the student newspaper in college. I was the News Editor and I was sitting at my desk typing up something and she was working with her friend, who was the advertising manager. They were cutting up ads and gluing them down. She CLAIMS she was 'shaking tape' off her X-acto knife. All I know is the knife came flying across the room and stuck into my arm. I still have the scar.

I didn't know her at the time. I was pretty mad and she was apologetic. We got to know each other after that and I tutored her in Calculus. (See, I am not as dumb as I look.) We dated on and off for three years before we moved in together.

BTW, I don't like Valentine's Day because one of the times we broke up, it was on V-Day. I gave her a present, she dumped me for another guy. (The timing was coincidental -- she was co-oping out of town and came up for the weekend and wanted to tell me face-to-face and it happened to be Valentine's Day).

Oh Boy, I'm so off the topic here but I just had to share my wonderful Valentine's Day and a happy ending. Sadly, I both my beautiful German Shepherds died suddenly within the last 6 months. The whole family was mourning them. Especially, DGS (Matt) as they were very attached and protective of him.
Well, we checked out the German Shepherd rescue website and Matt & I went today and brought home a lovely, young female Shepherd. We just got back home. Her name is Annie and already she & Matt have bonded.
I told DH forget the flowers this is the best Valentine's gift I could ever want.

Just had to share - now I'll go back and see what I've missed and what you guys are chatting about now.

Fortunately for us, New Year's is pretty easy to remember. And we've managed to escape most years for that special celebration. For the past few years we've celebrated the 10/19 date on the Magic.

Well... even though I've told OUR story of how the proposal went - it should come as no surprise to all of you that my spouse's version is somewhat DIFFERENT.

<chuckles>

Whoa, I wouldn't like my husband to tell that story either, if I'd first met him by stabbing him with a knife. LOL

Great story. So glad you found a new family member to love. The house is always empty with out them.

OK, that was my abbreviated version. Now, here's the whole story. I worked at a music supply warehouse in Bloomington,MN. Kevin was hired as a temp to do year end inventory. I had seen him around, thought he was pretty cute.
One day, he was climbing around on some pallet racking up in the rafters(40ft)marking boxes...I was on the floor pulling record orders(telling my age).
As he was crossing around a beam,he stepped on a loose board and it fell. Somebody hollered "Look out!" When he got himself turned around, he looks down on the floor to see this "cute chick" sprawled out on the floor, with the 2x4 lying next to her head and eyes shut. I then opened my eyes,;) and said "Hi". The rest is, as they say, is history.

:grouphug: Congrats on the new addition to the family. I know how hard it is after you lose a long time member of the family. DD bugged us for 6 months after losing our lab of 14 years for another dog. We're soooo glad we did it, but just as glad we waited.
