Check This Out!

Some of you may recall the recent FIRE which destroied 53 homes, 33 out buildings, 37 vehicles, and damaged 34 homes and 11 out buildings which we had out here in Malibu a couple of weeks ago ($100 million in losses) .... BEFORE I left for that cruise? Well... 3 hours ago they announced that they CAPTURED / arrested 5 young men and charged them with the crime of arson! They used security cameras from a local store combined with evidence at the scene to identify them. There were 12 people at the scene of the fire origin but only these 5 were arrested.

Here's most of the article quoted below:

5 arrested over November Malibu wildfire
Cave partiers accused of recklessly igniting blaze, then leaving scene

updated 2 hours, 43 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES - Authorities on Thursday arrested five men accused of causing a Malibu fire that destroyed more than 50 homes and caused over $100 million in losses, authorities said Thursday.

Investigators used surveillance video, receipts and food wrappers to track down the men who were believed to have been at the cave where the fire started, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said.

"As adults we have always taught our children to be aware of the perils of fire," Baca said. "In this case adults and fire and carelessness ... are things that led to this crime."

Baca identified the men as Brian Allen Anderson, 22; William Thomas Coppock, 23; Brian David Franks, 27; Eric Matthew Ullman, 18; and 19-year-old Dean Allen Lavorante. All five were in custody Thursday evening, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. It was unclear whether they had retained lawyers. None of the men had listed phone numbers in the Los Angeles County area.

Baca said the men, all from the Los Angeles area, were suspected of recklessly causing a fire with bodily injury, causing fire to an inhabited structure and arson during an emergency.

Baca said each charged carried two to four years of prison time upon conviction.

Illegal campfire suspected
Whitmore said earlier Thursday that investigators found several pieces of evidence that indicated revelers had triggered the blaze by setting a campfire at a popular party spot by a cave in Corral Canyon, which abuts Malibu Creek State Park.

County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said campfires in the area were prohibited.

"It is illegal to set fires in the cave above Corral Canyon under any circumstances. Whether there's a Santa Ana wind condition or not, it's illegal," said Yaroslavsky.

A review of security tape from a nearby store's camera and other detective work that took investigators as far away as Shasta County, on the Oregon line, led to the suspects being identified, Whitmore said.

Arson detective, Irma Gonzales, said a group of 12 people had been partying at the cave. She did not comment on how the blaze spread from the campfire, but said the group did not try to fight it, nor did they try to warn residents as they fled from the flames.

"They just drove off," Gonzales said.

The wildfire destroyed 53 homes, 33 outbuildings, one mobile home and 37 vehicles. Another 34 homes and 11 outbuildings were damaged. No one was seriously injured.

The fire broke out Nov. 24 and took several days to contain.

Ya see.... I AM innocent after all (in this matter) .....

<wink>

That's weird, I saw Crash made a post at 1:12pm, went to read it and it wasn't on the thread, then I went to send a reply and saw Crash's message. Went back to the thread and it wasn't there. Oh well, maybe this post will get lost as well, who knows, let's see what happens................:confused3

ChristopherWalken-TwilightZone.gif

OK, now I see Crash's last post and my post made it through cyber space.................:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I am so happy you are back!!!!! The pressure is now off me!!! :scared: LOL !!!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Cheryl,

.... thank you so kindly for such a nice welcome home! So - in return may I offer an opinion as to how Tom31B ripped and chopped my pie chart image?

All ya do (probably) is right click on the image and save to your computer - probably under a appropriate "misc" folder for this sort of mischief. Then open a garden variety paint program - and open again on the file you just ripped. Now you can use the paint tools to manipulate the image to your hearts' content... or manipulate it was your imagination dictates.

I would assume you might use the dropper to copy the field color of the "box" where you're gonna change the words... then draw a new box precisely OVER the existing box and verbage. Then use the dropper to match the color of lettering by sampling the other boxes' word color. Now use the text insertion tool to position the new words to add. You might want to ensure your text tool bar is open so you can run through the various fonts, sizes and so forth to obtain a good match on letter style, size and fit.

In the same manner you could cut and paste images together to put one persons' face over another image too. But THAT sort of thing can take considerable time to pull off - depending on your production standards and experience.

Once that's all done and you have a finished image - save as - under a new file name. This preserves a copy of the old file in case you want to reuse it or start over on another project. Make certain you are saving it as a JPEG image. This should ensure you can upload it to any host. I use dotphoto - however ... I PAY to use dotphoto as I also use dotphoto to SELL my images for a profit. All sites do not offer this ability. However, I think Tom31 used photobucket to host the most recent pie chart hack. You might want to open a free account there - aqs I assume they have free accounts.

Now once the image is loaded to a host - take a look at the image from the host. Enlarge it to the larger size and right click on the image to obtain the URL. Copy that and - position and paste it on the DIS where you want it. In Tom31s' case he was careful to post his doctored image to MY QUOTED POSTING to make it appear as if "I" had posted that image. Alas, the URL of his image is a dead give-away that it is not (in fact) the same image. <wink>

At any rate... that's ONE way of doing it. In practice the process is pretty fluid and quick. If you look at the time between the original posting and his posting (about 35 minutes) then you can imagine how quickly this can be done. in all likelihood Tom31 probably did it in about 10 minutes or less if he was efficient about it. However, it wold not surprise me if it took 15 or 20 minutes to hack.

So, Cheryl.... there ya have it. Now you should be ready to rip and hack images to YOUR specific needs. I might suggest you be judicious in selecting images that are EASY to manipulate. Practice will tell you a little more of what is easy and complicated to hack.

OK.... back to a few more minutes of ketchup now before I turn in ....

I "cured" a few people of e-mailing me. Whenever I got one of those e-mails, I would go to snopes and cut/paste the whole debunking and a link, begin the reply with "you should really check these with snopes or another site before you send them out" and provide link. Oh, selecting "reply to all" is important too. 2-3 times embarrassed, they no longer e-mail me the junk

I do the same thing! :rotfl2: My ex would constantly send that junk to my work. It took about 5 replies with snopes pages attached to get him to stop. Sad thing was, he really believed what he was sending was true.

Hi folks

DS is improving. He's got a killer headache and gets naseous if he moves around too much. The headache is managed by tylenol, so it's not too painful. He just starts getting cranky when its time for a new dose. All his neurological tests are fine though.

They are concerned about the cracked bones causing fluid to leak. Hasn't happened so far, but they are keeping a close eye on him. Also, the fracture is very near his ear and they can see some bruising inside the ear. They are going to test in the next few days to see if he suffered any additional hearing loss. Good thing is we just had a follow up hearing test last week, so they have up to date results to compare too.

He's sleeping most of the time. Eating a little. And walked around his room today. Still another day or 2 in the hospital at least.

Monica, Thanks for the update. Continued prayers your way.

Well...

... just checking in briefly here. We're back! Been back in fact since monday nite but it's been hectic with all manner of little pesky errands that need attention. So my time has been very limited for catching up here. But I have noticed that a half dozen plus pages go up every 12 hours or so - and that's leaving me in a difficult position to catch up!

At any rate - Happy birthday and happy anniversery to everyone we've missed these past 2 weeks or so. And prayers and hopes for all who could have used some in the past 2-3 weeks. I hope things have otherwise been at least managable for everyone lately.

So, our trip was a nice one. Painfully inexpensive for a cruising trip. I took about 1400-1500 pictures ... so my production was pretty low.

I'm sleepy tired - so am turning in now. I'll try to get pictures and links up soon - but I suspect we won't get to it until maybe next monday or tuesday.

Oh well... it IS nice to be home again!

SEVEN QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

1/ What / or 'who' is responsible for fires in California.

2/ What / or 'who' is responsible for the Earthquake in California.

3/ Why did these all stop two weeks ago? Maybe someone left the area?

4/ What or 'who' caused a potential hurricane in the Caribbean this week?

5/ What if any are these events connected with a Tasmanian devil?

6/ Why did this thread slow down in the last two weeks to the standard speed of most cruise meets thread?

7/ The answers are posted throughout this thread all you have to do is 'Ketchup'! Innocent until proven gilty

Thanks for making me laugh while I was drinking. i almost did a spit-take all over the laptop!

Sounds good -- you know, the fact that they list the cliff divers as an excursion suggests that the ship will leave later than 1 -- or that DCL is arranging an earlier show! The cliff divers usually have their first show at 1PM.

I'm hoping that's true. If I have to bring up one image when I think of Acapulco, it's the cliff divers.

Haven't been on in what seems like forever and probably has been. Now that I have my last vacation out of the way I finally have time to start looking forward to this trip and planning our excursions.

The excursions for Holiday gifts sounds like a great idea. I have to look though. Unfortunately, I am not sure what my Mom will be able to go on as she will have an ECV of electric chair. If all else fails...Santa can always give the gift of on-board credit :santa:

I am excited, while we were in WDW 2 weeks ago, my hubby surprised me with booking a few extra days at the World once we get there on the cruise! Looking forward to "meeting" everyone on the board.

Desiree

Congrats on the WDW stay after the cruise. What a great surprise. I haven't booked our return airfare in the hopes that we can spend a couple days in Florida. I think we may do Universal, since it will have been a couple years since we were there.

Well, I have to go get the kids ready for school, then drive in to take my last final of the semester!!!!!      (Not that I'm excited or anything)

My laptop is fixed. YYYAAAAAAYYYYY!!!
)More importantly, my marriage survived sharing a computer!
DH is very particular about his desk and his computer and I tend to leave things in my wake. It was also finals time for him, so I stayed off a lot.

Other than that, I've been baking. I need to spend tomorrow morning frantically raking leaves before we get snow tomorrow afternoon. We filled 45 of those giant yard bags 2 weeks ago and it looks like we never did anything. We even got a lovely note from the property manager about how leaves kill the grass...um...the house was empty for a year and the lot is covered with trees...we didn't have any grass to begin with. Ugh. I hate living in someone elses house.

My dd is 14 now...(turns 15 in May before the cruise) but i know she'd up to chatting beforehand.

She still sends e-mails back and forth with Caroline's (Pyramid2000) daughter (who turns 14 this coming January i think) from our last cruise.

How is Caroline? Is she coming back?

I wonder if the excursion booking day will be a repeat of last January's booking day?

Ya think????
I hope it will be at least a bit better, since it will only be people on our cruise rushing to the computer at the same time, not everyoe who wants to cruise all summer. We've never done a DCL excursion. We tend to venture out on our own. I don't particularly enjoy:
1. gather in designated place at designated time.
2. wait
3. shuffle to bus/boat
4. wait
5. get to destination
6. wait
7. shuffle to staging area
8. wait

You get the picture. I'm sure we'll do an excursion or two this time, I'm just not sure what. I really want to zipline, but DH and the boys don't.

I could be listed for the WB cruise as they are in port longer
I remember looking at the Europe excursions ans some were only available on certain sailings

Sounds good - pm me if you want to share email's
I couldn't send you a pm as you are set up not to receive them

My DD will be 14 & my DS 11. You won't find too much planning on 5400 page, mostly just a bunch of silliness, but the important info is on the website. Still not too many concrete plans have been made yet, so stay tuned & join in when you can! :goodvibes

If you would like to get our DD's together pm me and we can exchange emails

We could trade families for the day. DH and DS want to do the Outdoor Adventure in PV....I will probably take DD to a beach. It would be an upgrade for my 2, as you are a much cooler mom than I am. :goodvibes

Tom, that is great news that they made arrests. You know what's up with people, how could you just drive off?

Everyone have a great Friday.:goodvibes

True enough, although I think DCL will get a LOT of complaints if EB repo people aren't able to see the cliff divers -- they are an icon of Acapulco and featured prominently on the DCL website info about that port . . .

Happy Friday. I just found this thread and thought I would introduce myself and say hi.

My name is Heidi and my fiance is Chris. This cruise will be our Honeymoon and I am so excited to be able to go on a 15 day DCL cruise for our Honeymoon. My parents took the last East Repo cruise and loved it, so now I get the chance to go on it. This cruise will be my 7th DCL cruise, and Chris's 3rd DCL cruise.

This thread is a little overwhelming, but I hope to keep up with it and get to know everyone and figure out everything planned.

Welcome Heidi and Chris!

Good to have you aboard. Don't be overwhelmed just jump right in. Check out the website. Todd gave you the link already. There's alot more additional information about cruise activities we are planning. :)

Todd,

By the way I decided to give all the leather work on Nastassja's costume (ES AWE) a go myself. I bought 20 square feet of leather (half a cow) last week. It's very intricate. I just finished making my own patterns for the shoulder armor and belt with armor. Leather craft is cool. Never did it before but I feel crafty. We'll see what happens. I might be calling Toby if things don't work out.:)
