Can someone help me with a quick passport question? I'm sure it's a dumb question, but I'm new to the whole passport process.

What happens if your name is spelled wrong on your birth certificate?

When I was born, my mom wasn't allowed to fill out the forms. She told the nurse how she wanted my name spelled, but the "woman" wouldn't listen. Instead of spelling it LaTanya she spelled it LaTonya.

It's spelled correctly on all other document (SS card, permit, insurance policies...)

Am I right in assuming I'll have to get it legally changed before applying for our passports?

I know this is late but incase it is still being worked on let me tell you something about your Name and BC. First of all if you were in NY or a gov't job your name MUST match your BC, thats for liscenses and everything. NY verifies your name off your BC. In the Navy they used my BC for my Passport and would only except that and 1 other form of ID. For my Civilian Passport it had to be My BC and 1 other form again. Also when you send away for your passport YOU MUST send the the official BC which means the application must match the BC.

With a current wait time now up to 10-12 weeks do you want to take the chance of not using your legal name...??? Possible checking with the State (SC) records depart may give you and easier way to correct the BC instead of a legal name change.


If you go to this page it will list all the application centers in your zip code. One of them should be able to answer the question about your name on your BC.. http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/

I'm guessing though for the cruise you may be LaTonya on your Passport.... OF course then it won't match any of your other ID if you get stopped...

My name is spelled correctly on my permit. (Issued by the NY DMV) I had to provide a number of documents (can’t' remember how many points were needed) in order to obtain the permit. Since my name is spelled correctly on everything except the BC, they agreed to spell it correctly on the permit. Maybe I just got lucky, but I'm not complaining.

As for the BC, I mailed a letter to SC vital records requesting that they correct the mistake. I was told that it may take up to 3 months. So I'll apply for my passport in January.
