U.S. tourist dies after falling during zip line ride

Harness breaks, plunging woman 65 feet to her death in Honduras

No one would listen to me when I said some man from a DCL hit the pole at the end of a zip with his face!!!

Arlene sent me this little bit of news!!!!! I knew there was a reason I don't swim with fishes!!! :scared:  :scared:

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A woman sunbathing on a boat died after a stingray leaped from the water off the Florida Keys on Thursday and struck her, officials said.

The dead stingray lies on the deck of a boat in Florida.

"It's just as freakish of an accident as I have heard," said Jorge Pino of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "The chances of this occurring are so remote that most of us are completely astonished that this happened."

He said it was not clear whether the 55-year-old Michigan woman died from the blow to her head, from the ray's barb piercing her or from her fall backward.

The accident happened off the coast of Marathon Key, in the Florida Keys about an hour's drive south of Miami. The woman, who was with her husband and children, was taken to the Mariner Hospital in Tavernier, where she was pronounced dead.

Pino said he had seen stingrays leap into the air, but added, "it's very rare for them to collide with objects."

Results from an autopsy to be conducted by the medical examiner will be combined with witness statements and evidence from aboard the vessel to determine the cause of death, he said.

The spotted eagle ray weighed about 75 pounds, said Becky Herrin, a spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The species, also called a leopard ray or bonnet skate, can measure up to 8 feet in length, with an 8-foot tail, and weigh up to 500 pounds, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's Web site.

They tend to swim close to the surface and can leap out of the water when being pursued, according to the site.

You know Cheryl, I thought of you as soon as I read this earlier today!
I just didn't want to be the one to point it out to you.

The good news is that I doubt one of those puppies could leap 9 stories to the Magic pool deck.

If it does, could you ask it to save a deck chair for me?

Welcome aboard as well. :cool1: Even though we booked our rooms on January 31, 2007, I have only recently starting reading and joining in on the conversation of this thread. For me, it was easier just to watch the last bit of Thread #3 instead of attempting to go back and read all 200 plus pages. Once Thread #4 started, I knew I could stay caught up. There's still some things that go on here that confuse me -- mainly the pirate smilely. pirate: But it doesn't take that long and it's a lot more friendly than the main board!

Way more friendly.
But Christopher, how are you going to pass the quiz if you didn't go back & read all the posts??

Hola' Tina!

Please try to take it easy and stay safe with all the snow...

Crash, you are still too funny...

Dictate much?

:)

yeah, see, I thought you were talking about stenography...then I thought about it some more...:rotfl2:

ITA on the individual schools thing. Everyone told us before we moved here that we just had to move to the county we moved to...the best school district in the country, blah blah blah...to the point where it was assumed that we simply didn't love our kids if we didn't move here. That is not why we chose the house we ended up in, but we did move to the "right" county.

Well, my kids have now been in 4 schools in 3 school districts in their lives, and this is the least satisfied that we have ever been! I am so not impressed. Talk about teach to the test.

no child left behind...or is it: those that fall behind don't get left behind because the district won't get any federal dollars?

hi everyone! i haven't been here all week....missed chat last week....feeling outta the loop. gotta go get caught up! hope you are all having a great week so far! can't wait til friday, cuz i'm on a long weekend after that! i took monday off...working tues....and off again on weds! i can't wait!!! i'm in need of a mental health day!!

Hi weezer Mom :wave2:

That's so funny because I have been thinking of deleting mine, too. I never liked it -- it seemed like it was making fun of me more than anything, and while I know that is sport around here, it requires explaining everywhere else on the DIS and since I've been posting over in the DLRP section lately, it seemed odd.

But I like being part of the cool crowd for once in my life and having a tag, so I have been hesitating.

Maybe we need a 'tag ripping' party.

ahh, the peer pressure of the cool crowd... that's why I tagged myself. that & clash lyrics are uber cool

But I guess I just un-cooled myself by using a word like "uber".

I'm a 'lapsed runner' myself so I know what you mean. We decided to go to Atlanta over the July 4th holiday and I considered for about 15 minutes trying to get into the Peachtree Road Race again but then decided 'heart-attack hill' didn't need me as a victim. But I did run on the treadmill yesterday so that's a start.

Spring is coming (along with 3-7 inches of s*** tomorrow) so maybe we can start encouraging each other to get off our lazy adds and exercise.

So with that, off to the cafeteria. I thought I saw a donut down there this morning....

hey, the donut dash counts... bonus points if you checked someone to get the one you really wanted

math alert, grounghog alert, quiz alert...
