Hey - totally understand that. In Sep 06 - I was on the 11 Night Wonder. Got a message via my DD who was at home that my BFF from High School ( I was also the godmother to her then 18 month old) had started to get sick. She had had a seizure at end of July, some more in the beginning of Aug. Then on Aug 25, I had gallbladder surgery. She called beginning of Sep asking me to take her to the docs but as I was getting ready to leave 3 days later - I hadn't even packed yetscratchin.......seems to be a reoccurring thing) so I begged off saying - "I'll try and stop by before I leave."
Well, as luck would have it - I DID NOT stop by, I packed loaded my DH, myself and my DS (it was celebration trip for him) onto the Magic. At St. Lucia, I was notified that she was VERY sick - almost into coma. I told DD who had notified DS who had notified me that her DH had called our house. I forgot, we left and in Antigua, right in the middle of the terminal, as we were shopping, DH went to the ship to drop off souvenirs and make room for more. Well, DD call DS who chased DH down who had to come and tell me in the terminal in Barbados that Loretta had passed that morning.
I was heartsick. It also happened to be my dad's birthday. I totally forgot and when I called mom - I had to pretend that I was calling for his birthday. I was sick, went back to the Wonder, asked Guest Services about getting off the ship. They told me to go and wait in room - someone would get back to me, they never did, I became aware of it as we left the port. I was soooo sick - I was also in shock and couldn't function.
I did however, make an awesome friend from this - I think it was Loretta's way of looking out for me - the next day one of my tablemates - we were at a table of 14 noticed that there was something wrong with me - she asked me and I am usually a very private person about things like this - I prefer to suffer in silence but for some strange reason, the dam burst and I spilled. Pam, DisneySweetie - almost a total stranger at that time, reached out and hugged me and tried to console me - almost a total stranger. So for that I am eternally grateful and consider her a good friend.
I learned from that experience - I am a Leo and we are rather proud, private people, but I learned that you can always reach out and try and console others. Since then, I have made a conscious effort to stay connected with friends and with our group of friends.
I wish I had learned before it was too late. But, now in memory of Loretta, I make an effort to do what Pam did for me - reach out and console - even if it means just a. Never undestimate the power of touch.
Sorry - didn't mean to be a downer just wanted others to know - you can always take a lesson out of something. BTW, my godson is now 3 yrs old and I see him on a regular basis. Calls me Nina too.![]()
You sure know how to make a girl cry.
