Chrissie

Chrissie, I love Wally Lamb. When is he going to put out another book ??

Sorry about being MIA today. I have a feeling it might look bad....but my head is all messed up today. There was a local fire and a woman who died in it, and sadly I am somewhat connected to it.

I wasn't trying to avoid you all....just messed up today.

I bunch of my desert buddies have those for emergencies. I was going to bring a GPS but.....I think I'll bring this little puppy:

sonygpscs1.jpg

It's a Sony GPS tracker for photographers. It comes with software which marries the timestamp on your photos with the GPS track so you can find out where you where when you took a given pic.

It has linkes to Google Earth etc.

Real cruise related questions!

1. Do they cash travelers checks at guest services, or will I need to arrive with large quantiites of cash?

2. Will they give you an extra keycard for your cabin? Just to get in, not charge.

3. Do you think Rit Sunguard will be OK to use on the pirate gear shirts we ordered?

Thanks!

Yes you can cash traveler's checks at Guest Services.

Yes, you can get an extra keycard for your cabin.

No clue to the third one!

In regards to dining...does DCL actually release the rotation in advance or is it a surprise when you get on the ship (we have never linked with a group before) I know it is currently not set in stone but wondered if they do eventully announce it.

Thanks!

You will not know your rotation until you check in at the port.

Yes, you can get extra KTTW cards for your room. :) You can also get a replacement easily if you happen to lose one ... found that out the hard way.

Thanks! We are going to be split between two cabins, and thought it would be easier to have cards to both.

Wow, I can't imagine losing a card!!! That must have been scary!

Hi guys...me again. Thanks for bearing with me--trying to increase post count.

Our "little" family includes: DD8--she is celebrating her BD on this cruise!, DS3, DH (lost count), and Myself. My husband works for SBC, and I work for Children's Hospital LA.

By the way...this site is addicting. When will I have time to actually get all of the stuff done in time for the cruise, if I am glued to the screen?

Thanks to all for the welcomes, and the great advice. Can't wait to start PM so that I can get even more info, and get signed up for some of the added fun (if it's not too late)

Carol :cool1:
Welcome to the club.
I even try to DIS at work (like right now)

Stace, I checked out that website that you posted for the banner and I'm thinking of getting one, but stupid question, what size ?

I think I remember seeing someone's (was it Andy's ?) that was 3'x5'. Is that a good size for a cat 6 verandah ?

They also had a 3'x8', is that too long ?

Ours is the 3'x5'....I think that should be fine.

Stacey, I'm too lazy to go back and find the website for the banners.... remind me,please.

Actually, it was in the beach bag that DH and DD had. The problem was that they were not with me and I needed to get into the stateroom to start getting ready for dinner. Our host was not around and another CM escorted us to the front desk. They asked a few security questions and canceled the original card after issuing a new one.

Which clock is this? I've been looking for a travel alarm that you don't have to press a button to light up the face. :)

Laura, I got the one called Smart Lite Travel Alarm clock...#AC354. I also liked that it closes into its own case, so the buttons won't get pushed, either in my bag, or by my stateroom host, who kept accidentally waking me at 6 am!
Where might I find this clock, dear friend? me needs it!

I finally got back on and answered you from the last thread. Sorry about that!
Uh........ can you let me know about the banner/website? I missed that info!
I know I know... I'm falling way behind but MY GOD our thread moves too fast for me! Didn't help that my internet AND cable tv (can you imagine? no tv channels at all and no internet either? I know.. I had to resort to finally reading some on a book I've been reading like forever LOL) were down at night and might be down again tonight. that's when I'm usualyl on to catch up here! LOL

Don't even joke about that. I've been held at gunpoint by guerillas before and it really wasn't very fun.
:scared: Yes, I'm dead serious.

NOW...who wants to go with me in Cartegena??
*raises hand* I'd go with ya- what are the odds that would happen to you AGAIN? I'll play those odds. LOL

Warning...this is a vent. We are going to an out of town swim meet this weekend that begins Friday late afternoon, so we have to leave Friday morning. DH's boss, who has no kids has rescheduled a meeting 3 times and decided that Friday for lunch is the day. There is no way we can wait for him and make the meet in time. He told his boss that he can't be there and she basically said well either you come to the extended lunch meeting or you might not have a job. Then the only other weekend this summer that my DD has a dance performance that she has been working on since January, my DH's boss has decided to have an executive retreat! UGH!! Yes, I am happy he has a job and makes enough that I don't have to work but this lady drives me crazy! It just isn't right. Someone else asked about the next weekend and she said no, she can't make it. I love how it is all about her and what works best for her. I won't even mention all the kids' events he has missed because of work related stuff. :sad2:
The reason I quit my job was because he isn't around that much and someone needs to be here. Not his fault at all, but man is this frustrating. Does anyone out there need a really hard working CFO? This was even after he and I went out for margaritas tonight.:scared1:
Grand Cayman is looking better and better to move to. Life just shouldn't be this complicated.
ugh I hate that!
Also glad DH has a job that pays well enough that I don't have to work so atleast the kids have ONE parent to everything but it never fails the really important stuff that the kids really want him to go to/etc.- he ends up having to work exactly when that important something is happening. sigh. I totally feel ya.........

It's two part process...

Part one - dye the entire shirt the lighter color. Since I wanted that chrystilline effect, I shoved the shirts in to a small bucket (4 quart paint bucket from Ace - for 6 shirts), very tightly, and poured the dye over. Wait about 4 hours, and wash it out.

Part two - Over dye to make the V. Fold the shirt in half long wise. Pinch at the point of the V (about 2/3 down), and finger walk up to the widest part of the V (on the shoulder), making pleats about 1" high. At that point, wrap a rubber band around tightly. Cover the portion you don't want to dye with plastic wrap to prevent accidents. Use a squeeze bottle to over dye the shirt with the darker color. (This is the technique most people think as "tie-dye".) Wrap in plastic wrap and let sit for 8-10 hours. Wash out all the excess dye. If a solid color is important to you (like these shirts) use LOTS of dye. Remember - you have to soak 4 layers of cloth.

Not hard. Remember that half the fun is the unpredictable results. Not even these turned out exactly like I envisioned, but I'm still pleased with the result. So, don't go in expecting "perfection" - regardless of what happens, it's art - it'll be beautiful. :)

Variations....
Rather than using a squeeze bottle, it'd be interesting to just stick that portion in a bucket of dye, and clamp it to the edge of the bucket, so that entire shirt doesn't accidentally fall in. Might use more or less dye - depending on the type of bucket used. But, faster than squeeze bottles. (We like squeeze bottles, as then the boys can help. They each dyed their own shirts.)

Reverse the design. That is the chrystaline effect is in the V, and the dark dye is in the body. This would be interesting - might try it next.

Do this, and then discharge dye in an interesting counter pattern. You can use bleach (not full strength), or discharge paste. You can get some really interesting effects with this. Or, cut out sponges (Mickey Heads?), thicken the bleach solution to a paint consistancy, and discharge using the sponge. I thought about doing that, but decided against it. A little too Disney for me - if you get my drift. But, might turn out really fun. (Actually - this'd be fun to try. Wonder if I can find someone to commission a set sometime. You think something like that would sell?)

Or rather than a counter pattern - shove it all tightly in a small jar, and pour the bleach in - you'd get a discharged crystaline effect then. Now, that might be really cool.

Be sure to have some Bleach-Stop on hand to throw the shirt into. Discharging can go pretty quickly. I'd recommend no stronger than a 1:3 (25% solution) bleach to water ratio for something like this. Maybe even a 10-15% solution would be better.

OH! One hint? If you're doing shirts for kids.... Kids grow. We always make a set with every size, then put away the too big shirts. That way - the family still has an entire set for several years. Because of the professional dyes and chemicals I use - fading is practically non-existant. You can't tell the two year old shirt, from the new one coming off the shelf.

Hope that gives you some ideas. Like anything - the hardest part is gathering your courage and jumping into something new. :goodvibes Dharma has some nice kits with everything you need except the clothing, and really excellent directions, if you're just starting out. That's how I did it. :thumbsup2

.
You are so handy!
(and you think ahead... I like that in a person- cause I'm like that LOL)

I would be happy to get tickets for anyone who needs them. We are in San Diego and going to the port on 8/17 so I would have to mail them to you ahead of time. PM me if I can help you.

Michelle
OMG
are we sure we can use them without being ID'd? Cause if so I SOOOOOOOOO need your help! I've been wondering how we're going to afford the DL tickets. I mean here we're going days earlier to go to DL and I'm thinking it's so expensive how are we gonna afford it. that's such a great deal but is it really okay to have someone there buy them? Is it really okay to purchase them for CLOSE FRIENDS (hehe- we're almost close enough to be relatives.... right? right? hehe)
