7-day vs. 31-day waitlist?

I made a reservation today, and we got our 2nd choice of resort, so I asked to be waitlisted at our 1st choice resort. The woman I spoke with at MS wanted to know if I wanted the waitlist to end at 31 days out or 7 days out, and I asked what the difference was. All I really got out of her explanation was something about being within the 30 days for holding. Now, we're planning on going no matter which resort we stay at, so I asked for the waitlist to go until 7 days out. I hope I did the right thing.

Can someone give me a better explanation about this?

Thanks!

If your WL is for a room that will take MORE points, WL's to 7 days are fine.

However, if what you want is LESS points, then you will have points go into holding if the WL gets filled during that 31 to 7 day period.

So, if you have a 1 bedroom that takes say, 200 points and are hoping for a room that takes 250, no problem. But if the new room takes 180 points, then 20 points would go into holding.

Those 20 points would then only be able to be used for reservations 60 days or less and would expired at the end of the UY.

Ah, that makes perfect sense. I've never waitlisted before and never had points in holding, so I never had to think about this before. The reservation we are waitlisted for takes one more point than the one we have booked, so I made the right choice.

Thanks!

That is great. And, just for future reference, ou can change it after it is put in. I did that last summer, started with a 7 day WL for two different resorts, but then decided to just go with 31.
