DD's plans have changed and they will be coming up this weekend and going on their trip next weekend instead..

So - DGD wants to make the recipe I posted on the CB for the Potato Bacon Chowder.. The ingredients were listed in an "odd" way in this particular cookbook and the recipe calls for "6 ounces of bacon"..

I have a pound of frozen bacon here.. How do I figure out how many frozen slices to take out so I can return the rest to the freezer? I know the rest won't get used up in the near future, so I don't want to thaw out the entire pound..

Anyone? :confused3

Thanks! :)

I would use about half. Too much bacon is never a bad thing! Heck, you could even use the whole pound and it still wouldn't be too much.

Without a kitchen scale, this is what I'd do: There are 4 ounces in 1/2 measuring cup, so I'd approximate the amount of bacon based on that measurement to get close to 6 ounces.

Okay - I think I'll go with half - as I seem to recall I have recently copied other recipes that call for a "half a pound" and when I get around to trying those, I'll have the bacon on hand..

Thanks!

I would take the frozen package and cut it in half with a very sharp knife (and hopefully not cut myself in the process!). Then stick the unneeded half in a ziploc and back into the freezer. Yes, next time you need it, it will be half-slices, but no prying things apart while frozen that way. :)

Yup - that's exactly what I was thinking.. Hopefully I can do it without chopping my hand off..;)

The 6 oz. of bacon the recipe calls for needs to be "chopped" anyhow - and if I remember correctly the other recipes called for cooking it and crumbling it - so I don't need to worry about having "slices"..

Does the recipe call for 6 oz of cooked or uncooked bacon?

Count the number of slices. Divide by 16. Multiply that number times 6.

I asked my fourth grader and that was his answer:thumbsup2

Hooray for your 4th grader!

Bacon is packaged and measured by weight not volume. There are 16oz in 1 pound, thus 8 oz = 1/2 pound. Slice off a little less than half of a 1 pound package and you will be close enough.

Unless it is center cut bacon... Those packages only have 12 oz in them... So exactly half! But yeah... never too much bacon, so even if you end up with 8oz, who cares!:rotfl:
