I have searched the HUGE cake thread in vain, but really can't find much info regarding the $12.50-ish six inch cakes. You know, the ones that just about all restaurants have and you simply ask for them at the podium. The cake thread is pretty much devoted to the amazing custom Disney confections. I KNOW those are to die for, but there are only 3 of us and we're just looking to have a token cake so DD can blow out a candle and we can have a slice and not have a cake go to waste. She'll have the elaborate cake for her party at home.

That being said, I don't want a tasteless cake, even if it only costs $12.50.

If any of you have gotten the 6 inch $12.50 "pre-prepared podium possibly been frozen cake", could you please tell me what it was like? I believe I have read that you get a choice of vanilla or chocolate. But is the icing buttercream or whipped cream? Does it taste decent? What does it look like?

I think we will celebrate at Coral Reef, but Le Cellier is also a possibility. I know about the Coral Reef diver and menu already and am working on that. But if you have specific cake info/birthday celebration info for either of those restaurants, please share that as well.

Really, anything you could tell me would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

We got one in January at Spoodles. It's your basic grocery store cake, but not tasteless. You can choose chocolate-on-chocolate or vanilla/buttercream.

Here's a pic, it looked better though. It's dark inside Spoodles & the pics turned out weird.

We got a cake at Mama Melrose last Oct. and it was terrific! I ordered the 6-inch and I swear it looked bigger than that. We got vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream icing-it also had raspberry filling, which we didn't order--this made me wonder if we actually received an 8-inch cake, if they ran out of the 6-inch that night. Either way, the cake was fantastic and NOT like a grocery store cake at all! It had lovely sugar flowers on top, too, not just ones made out of icing.

There were 3 of us and we had 2/3 of the cake left so the restaurant boxed it up for us, and we took it back to the room. If you do this, I would advise having a fridge b/c the icing is so soft. We ate on it 2 more times during the week and ended up throwing away the last piece. It had to be bigger than 6 inches!!! I think it was well worth $12.50!

I got one at Kona Cafe to celebrate a friend's birthday. It was very good and the 4 of us only ate half of it. We asked our waitress to offer the rest of the cake to a family with young daughters dining at the same time we were. We were going to MK and didn't want the cake to go to waste.

How sweet....passing along some magic!:wizard:

Thanks for the info. I guess the one at Coral Reef is the same as these. They offered the vanilla one. I like the idea of sharing the cake with another family. We've done that before and had someone return the favor.

Any vanilla $12.50 cake photos?

:cloud9: Again, DD's signature

We just got back on Thursday.

We celebrated my son's Birthday while at Chef Mickey's.
I ordered the $12.50 cake when I got there that night.

It was whipped cream icing. It was good...but I think if I had it to
do over again, I would have ordered a nicer one like I see in
the other cake-thread.

We asked for a box to take it back to our room. Our son wanted ice
cream from Chef Mickey's, so he was stuffed by the time his cake
arrived.

The box our server placed the cake back in was a Sarah Lee Bakery
box. Here is a pic of the vanilla 6" cake. Best Wishes!

:scared: OH NO!!!!!

It looks beautiful, but our whole family RUNS from a cake with whipped cream icing. As a Southener, it is almost a sin to put anything but buttercream on a birthday cake. For us, whipped cream is for strawberries and some naughty unmentionable things...... Even with that temptation, DH wouldn't eat whipped cream. :rotfl:

The first time DD ever had whipped cream icing on a cupcake, a classmate brought them to preschool when she was 2. DD was NOT amused. From her description, I have a vision of her all but throwing her toddler self to the floor, cupcake in hand, wailing, "Oh, the humanity!!!!!!"

The 11th Commandment in our family is, "Thou shalt not put whipped cream on a perfectly good cake. Yea, verily, use only buttercream and keep the cake holy."

I guess I had better clarify the buttercream/whipped cream icing issue before I commit to that cake, hadn't I?

There are pics of at least 3 different 6 inch unpersonalized cakes on the first page of the cake thread. Cake 6, the last one, from Biergarten. Cake 8 from CM. Cake 11 from CP. There's also a small unpersonalized cake from CM with a pirate Mickey theme that might also be a pre-made. Don't think they vary among restaurants though they probably vary greatly depending on who was doing the decorating that day, if that makes sense.

I do not have the definitive answer about buttercream vs. whipped cream but I can tell you that I considered ordering a cake from California Grill last trip and the chef told me that they would only provide a 6 inch unpersonalized version and he was quite emphatic that it was vanilla or chocolate buttercream only.

does anyone know (and i asked this some time back on the big cake thread and did not get a response) if these cakes are safe for people w/peanut/tree nut allergies?

EMom~Being from the South myself, I know what you mean about the buttercream icing thing. :lmao:

This one was whipped cream. It was similar to those that you can purchase from Sams Club or WalMart with the whipped cream icing. It ended up being around $16 or so with tax. As I said earlier, the cake was good. However, next time...I think I will order one of those gorgeous, delicious custom made cakes.

If your daughter only likes butter cream...I would check before ordering to make sure she gets butter cream icing. Good Luck.

For my DW birthday last May I ordered a larger Mickey cake at Coral Reef. It was chocolate with chocolate icing. The price with tax was over $60.00. Not worth it IMO. Looked like a cake that I might have made. No piping, just a sugar flat Mickey face laying on top. :sad2:
