6.5 Earthquake hits OFF-coast of N. California

It's being reported on & off on CNN. The quake hit around 4:27 p.m PST, about 25 miles from Eureka, CA.

Lots of power outages there. No injuries reported.
There was no tsunami warning issued.
There's been about 4 aftershocks already.

That's waaaay up in NorCal. Almost the Oregon border. Here in the Bay Area, we didn't feel it, but we had some lower richters earlier in the week.

eh, they're a part of living out here. It's only a concern when a really big one hits (& 6.5 is a pretty big one.) Eureka is sparsely populated. We'll hear more about it on the late local news.

That's good to know. When CNN shows the dot on the map of where Eureka is. To the rest of us who don't know CA well at all, it's like, "Umm, okay. How close is that to San Francisco & the big cities up there?"

Eureka is 284 miles north of San Francisco. You drive straight up Highway 101. It's a beautiful drive. Eureka is the largest city in that area. Lots of little tiny towns up there. They were talking about Ferndale having some damage. Now that's a little tiny town!
