500 Disney World workers affected if Haitian status ends

I think trump just picked the wrong opponent this time...

A union representing Walt Disney World workers says 500 Haitian workers at the theme park resort could be affected by a Trump administration proposal to end protective status for Haitians.

Who is the formidable Trump opponent of whom you speak? Iger? The Association of Immigration Lawyers of America? Or the Haitians?

The status the Haitians have is called "Temporary Protected Status" because it was never meant to be permanent. It was granted as a result of an earthquake that occurred seven years ago and was supposed to give some time to Haiti to recover from the earthquake. The Haitians knew it wasn't permanent. Disney knew it wasn't permanent when they hired them. There are no surprises here. In the world of immigration law, temporary protected status is granted and it expires. That is business as usual in the immigration world.

Only seems like news to those who aren't familiar with our immigration laws.

I'm perfectly ok with this and I'm not a Trump supporter. I don't understand why people from other nations think they have a right to U.S. benefits. No country does this for us. I can't go live and work in Canada under a protected status or anywhere else for that matter. It was a humanitarian gesture and now the gesture has expired. If you want to stay here go through the proper channels like everyone else. My husband immigrated here legally and doesn't expect special treatment so I don't understand why they would believe anyone would be sympathetic to the cause more than this country already has been. Get a visa or go home.

Who's the wrong opponent? Who's going to oppose? I know I'm not.

I guess I should have worded it better. I just meant I find it entertaining when the government gets ideas that disney doesn't support.

Ok...but disney has no power, or really concern for these types of things...

And the idea that there is anything even remotely resembling an effective union in Florida is laughable.

Entertaining isn't a word I, personally, would use.

The US did a good thing by helping these people affected by an earthquake but this WAS a temporary and Trump isn't the president who was in office when this status was enacted. It isn't entertaining (to me) to know that 500 people will be sent back to the hell that Haiti currently is. But we should be a country that follows laws.

Maybe the president will extend the protected status. But I'm always suspicious when a major corporation “demands” something like this. Does Disney pay less than they would to people not protected by this status? Are Americans (native born and legal immigrants) being kept from working in these jobs? We know that Disney has been replacing long time employees with lower paid workers. Is this their attempt to keep low paid people or genuine concern for Haitians?

Of course Disney wants the status to be extended, it helps lower their wages. Not completely unlike hiring an Indian consultancy to bring in people from other countries to replace the IT staff to --- wait for it --- lower wages.

500? Disney employs about 70,000 in Central Florida. That's not even 1%. Hard to argue the company would be impacted by this in any way.
