Well, last Monday we (me, DD12 & DD9) flew out of Milwaukee on Southwest for a 5 night stay at the Carousel Inn right across the street from Disneyland.

Had a layover in Vegas for 2 hours from which I took away $95 extra bucks. Southwest got us to John Wayne Airport on time. No complaints with Southwest, they do a good job.

Used the Disneyland Express, which I'm not that thrilled with. I think next time I'd just take a cab since it only costs a bit more for 3 people to take the cab. Problem was the bus was full (good for the bus company) and had to make many many stops to drop everybody off at their hotel. It took over an hour to get from the airport to our hotel, which I think is normally about a half hour by cab. Our return trip on the bus was just as slow, but when you're going home you don't care.

Checked into the Carousel around 3 pm and our room was not ready, but was told they upgraded us to a suite for free. That was nice. We also got our $25 Quizonos gift card because the pool was not open due to renovation. Right now, the Carousel is about half way done on their renovations. The whole front half of the hotel is being refurbed.... and it needed it from what I could tell. I had no problem with the hotel and the staff was very friendly. We spent little time at the hotel, so since the bed were very comfy the hotel gets a thumbs up. I will say this though, my daughter really disliked the construction workers who were staring at her.

There's nothing like being about a 3 minute walk from the park entrance at Disneyland. So convenient, so much easier than WDW.

First thing we did was go and buy some Dole Whip and take in a Tiki Room show. There was a pretty long line for the Dole Whip, and the birds performed to an 80% capacity show. I really thought that the park was busy.

However, after the show we walked by Indy and the wait was only 20 minutes, which actually ended up being only about 10. Pirates was practically a walkon, as was Haunted Mansion. Space Mountain ended up being a 10 minute wait. We didn't actually run into the line of people until we were inside the boarding area.

We were pretty shocked. Eventhough it can feel crowded while walking at the Magic Kingdom, the wait times on the rides were minimal. And it was that way all week. Most we ever waited was 30 minutes for Toy Story Mania. Heck, on Saturday when the park opened at 8 a.m., we got there at 7:40 and were right near the front of the line to enter. Between 8-10:30 we rode the following 11 rides: SM, Nemo, Matterhorn, Mr. Toad, Alice, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Jungle Cruise, Indy, Pirates, and HM. In Unofficial Guide terms I would say the crowds were a 1 or 2. Only Friday night did things get busy, but we had collected plenty of fast passes that morning.

And at DCA, everything was pretty much a walkon, including California Screaming, which is a really great coaster. My girls loved it. Oh, by the way, the little icecream stand in the Paradise Pier area has the best softserve icecream ever. I mean EVER!!

For breakfast we generally just grabbed a donut or croissant and some juice from the free continental breakfast at the Carousel. That would tie us over until we had a big lunch. One morning we did a character breakfast at the Plaza Inn. I know that gets some pretty low marks, but we actually liked it. we went at 10:30 for a late breakfast early lunch thing and there were very few people there. We met: Tigger, Pooh, Eeyore, Captain Hook, Minnie and Max. The food wasn't bad either, but then again how can you screwup breakfast food?

We ate lunches and dinners inside and outside the parks. I'd say we averaged around $80 per day for the three of us in our food/snacks/drinks bill. I'm sure we could have done better, but I just wanted to keep it simple. I enjoyed not carrying a backpack full of stuff into the parks. Matter of fact, many times we went with nothing at because if we needed something the hotel was always close.

One of our favorite places ended up being the Diamond Horseshoe Review. We say Bill Hill and the Hillbillies play. They put on a great show. Definitely put it on your list of must see attractions.

I don't know how DCA can replace the the Aladdin show? It is so hilarious and the crowd was totally into it. Toy Story better really be good because I'm going to miss the Jeanie.

Ohhhh, my daughters loved Captain EO. I enjoyed seeing it also, but wow is it corny and cheesy all wrapped up in one. I know this, if I ever get to assemble a space troop, I am not inviting Hooter, that dude is worthless.

If you have any questions please fire away.

Thanks for sharing...I love living vicariously through trip reports!

"How can you screwup breakfast food?" I don't know, personally, but from what I've read, Captain Kidd's Buffet across the street from the Park does exceedingly well at that :rotfl:

Did they upgrade you to one of the Park view suites, by any chance? If so, how was it? Been wondering if I should splurge on it for an upcoming special occasion. (Not that every Disney vacation isn't a special vacation...)

I don't know how DCA is going to replace the Aladdin show...It's a pretty hard show to top!

All the room upgrade really meant was there was an extra room for me to sleep in, which was nice since I snore. It allowed the kids to sleep well. The room was located in the very back of the hotel. Oh, I know this doesn't really matter since you're not there to watch TV, but the TV's at the hotel were terrible.

Thanks for the report, I enjoyed the read! Good to see that you and your girls were able to go on a lot of rides!!! And I soooo feel your DD's pain!!! I can't stand that! I think I may need to check out the Aladdin show... just not sure if a toddler will sit through that. Oh and is it fact that they'll be replacing it with Toy Story? She'd definitely sit through that!

Sounds like a great trip for you and your girls ~ we love a late breakfast/brunch @ Minnie's. Aladdin is a great show, DD and I will definitely take the time to see it this July.

How was flying out of Milwaukee on Southwest? My fiancee lives in the north suburbs of Chicago and we found a much better deal flying out of Milwaukee. Did everything take off on time and all that?

Thanks!

Welcome back! :)

I am glad that you and your family had an awesome time! How nice for the bonus's too, of the upgrade and the gift card....... score!....... That is so very nice when a hotel provides offers such as those, when a full service might not be available, or your room was not ready when it was suppose to be etc.
Did you visit Marcelines Confectionery Shop? I so totally love their chocolate caramel apples. :)
I enjoyed reading your TR.
Keep up the good work! And have a magical day!

We must have rode Space Mountain 20 to 25 times over the 5 days. We rode Indy a lot also because the highest wait we saw was 35 minutes and that was Friday night. The theming on Indy is just so incredible.

The Aladdin show is a must see before it leaves in August. We sat in the front row (if you book a package through Disney Travel you get preferred seating, which means you allowed in before everybody else to pick whatever seats you want), but any seat in the theater is good.

Flying out of Milwaukee was no problem. Getting to the airport was easy as it's right off 94 (however there is construction on 94 right now, so you could run into traffic problems). The Supersaver parking was only $5 per day, which will save you some serious coin and the shuttle service to and from was excellent.

Southwest did a good job. All our flights were ontime. One bad thing is Southwest doesn't have a direct flight to LA from Milwaukee. I believe AirTran does. However, if you fly Southwest you can fly into John Wayne Airport which is the closest and easiest airport to Disneyland.

Love the trip report - we're from Green Bay (GO PACK) and making our first trip to SoCal this summer. We're flying Midwest (Frontier) they have a daily direct flight to and from LAX. We've never been to either park during a peak attendance time so that makes me a little nervous, but we're getting 5 for 3 deal so we have time to do what we want without rushing...really looking forward to it.

We are also planning on doing at least one character meal with the kids - not sure which one. Does anyone know when the latest breakfast reservation is? We were thinking we'd have a light breakfast @ hotel, head to parks for opening and tour until late morning then have our sit down meal before heading out for a break and nap.

Sound good?

Cool, thanks for the info. I am looking forward to July, can't wait to go! $5 is WAY better than the 15-20 they charge at O'Hare.

Glad it went well!

Cheesehead here going in June. When are you going? I am excited to try DL since we are WDW vets. Should be a good time. We are flying Airtran with direct flights. We were Midwest/Frontier regulars, but not since they screwed us over in 2008 with the revamping of the flights.

I've only eaten at Goofy's and we went around brunch time, 11:30 I believe. It was a good time to go because we they had all the usual breakfast items out and some lunch stuff as well so there was a lot of variety.

Thanks for posting. I enjoyed reading your report. We're going in a week and I'm glad to hear that lines are quite manageable!

Can someone explain the Diamond Horseshoe Review to me? Where is it? Is it a restaurant? Is it a sit down or counter service? What kind of food do they serve? Do you need reservations? I'm assuming it's not like the show at WDW (the one at Ft Wilderness - I can't think of the name) that is expensive and you have to reserve months in advance. I've heard good things about it but I don't really know much about it. Thanks!

Today the Golden Horseshoe (sorry, I called it the Diamond Horseshoe) restaurant is basically a counterservice type place that offers some "free" entertainment located in Frontierland. You can pretty much head in there, order off the menu boards, and find a seat. The icecream dishes looked delicious, but we had the fish and chips and Chicken Strip basket.

As for the entertainment, there are two choices; Billy Hill and the Hillbillies and the Laughing Stock Co. Billy Hill and the Hillbillies is a group of "brothers" all named Billy and they all play fiddles. It's great. They play Thrus., Fri., Sat., Sun., & Mon. at different times during the day (check out the DL schedule for times). You don't have to buy anything to watch and enjoy, though I think it would be rude to take seats away from paying customers (just my opinion).

I totally agree!

I enjoyed our flights on Midwest - nothing like fresh baked chocolate chip cookies on an airplane!
