I thought the Norwegian Sea was hugh when I cruised on it Dec 01!

It is a pretty big ship. But then consider that RCCL's Explorer-class ships (Explorer, Voyager, Adventure, Mariner, and Navigator of the Seas) displace 142,000 tons and hold 3100 passengers! The new Queen Mary 2 will displace about 150,000 tons. It will be the world's largest passenger ship until RCCL's new "ultra voyager" ship, which will be just under 160,000 tons with a capacity of 3600. This one's due in 2006 and will cost close to 3/4 of a billion dollars to build.

By comparison, the new Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, weighs in at about 77,000 GRT.

And I must add, it is a PRETTY big ship. Some of these other big ships are just so plain. Big white bricks. Everytime I see the Wonder or Magic I am in awe at not only how big , but also how beautiful, classy, etc etc they are. :)

Besides, I always hear that size doesn't matter. ;)

I couldn't agree more!! Some of the ships we have been docked next to looked like giant floating hospitals... BLEH. The Disney ships are just so gorgeous, and look even more gorgeous next to some of those monstrosities. :)

I've heard DCL Cast Members affectionately refer to them as floating milk cartons. I think that is an appropriate description! ::yes::

Floating Milk Cartons. Thats what I call them too. Very short bow and a square aft. And white. This design maximizes interior space, there for more money comming in.

Money isn't everything. The Magic and Wonder are currently the best looking ships afloat!

It will be interesting what the new Queen Mary looks like when she comes on line. I bet she'll be another classy lady. Then DCL won't have the market on "looks" but the Magic's and Wonder's horns will still be the best.

In Nassau on 9/26 I was standing on my verandah, looking at one of the "milk carton" ship docked next to us. All of a sudden I heard the most awful horn sound coming from the ship. Then, 15 seconds later, farther away, another terrible, grainy, tin sounding horn coming from the "milk carton" on the OTHER side of it. Then 15 seconds later I hear "This is the duty officer speaking from the bridge. We are about to sound the ship's horn. Anyone standing on an open deck in front of the forward facing funnel may want to cover their ears." Then........a musical, beautiful Disney Wonder version of "when you wish upon a star." I immediately cheered, clapped and pumped my arms!! We DEFINITELY won THAT horn blowing contest!!! :bounce:

We always smile when we see the passengers on the neighboring cruise ships standing on their decks and snapping pictures of the Disney ships. You can't blame them, both the Magic and Wonder are so beautiful.

Nothing is funnier than the "battle of the horns." We got into one two weeks ago on the Wonder. How any other ship can think that their boring hornblast can compete with Disney's is beyond me. It was still fun to hear "When You Wish Upon A Star" sounded 5 times in answer to the other horn.

The best part, the passengers on the other ship kept cheering each time they heard it. :teeth:

My parents just told me they are booked on the new Queen Mary 2!!! They are flying to London and spending a few nights and then sailing transatlantic back to New York!!!

Wish I could swing it!!!

We have the same memories with video and photos! In my scraptbook I say the same as above..... look at all the other people cheering for us an how lucky we were to be on our ship rather than theirs. Hearing the horn brought tears to my eyes.

Absolutely delightful! A DO NOT MISS!

Nimitz Class carriers come in at 93,000 to 100,000 tons EMPTY. Put on 90+/- aircraft, fuel for aircraft, provisions for crew and 5000 crew and you have a real load. Once you have been on a carrier all other ships are small. Plus they are FAST!

We are taking my dad and mom on their first Disney cruise (first cruise, for that matter) this November. I have visions about seeing their faces when they see the SIZE of the Wonder....

but then I remember my dad was on the USS Midway and I know it won't be the size that will "wow" him. I'm thinking the beauty inside and the MUCH better food will be the thing that gets him! :)

And also the fact that he'll have a room with a verandah instead of bunking with 7 other guys. Oh, and the fact that the Capt. won't ask him to go down and grease the shafts! :)
