3yo neighbor boy gets edema on hands from heat...anyone know what this is?

The 3 yo neighbor boy has this edema thing going on, we think, because of heat. His hands became swollen and painful/uncomfortable again today because of heat. And here in MO it isn't even HOT yet. She is really worried about her son. He had this last year and her pediatrician (IMHO) blew it off.
She has to get a referral to see a specialist, so what specialist would you see for this???
Any advice would be appreciated. The poor little dude was crying because of his hands yesterday.

I'm glad she's seeking a specialist, the poor little guy. It's obviously caused by something and should take that seriously.

Encourage him to drink more water. Limit his salt intake. Has she ever had his bp tested? Switch peds too. The one she has now sounds like an idiot.

Thanks for the replies. I have been searching on the net and can't find anything to match what is going on. It is wierd. He drinks enough & really it wasn't that hot out. He did go boating on the river, maybe it has something to do with that, although he did have it happen just from heat at home last year.

I thought I would ask here and see if anyone ever heard of something like this.

A friend of ours has a ds that had excessive edema when he was about 6 yo. They found out he had a problem with his heart (can't remember exactly what, I believe a valve wasn't opening correctly). I'm not saying that's your neighbor's ds's problem, but she really needs to have him checked out as soon as possible-just to be safe.
