Well, it appears I cannot do 3rd grade math. I know you smart folks on the DIS will be able to help. Here is the problem:

If you need 2 pints of milk for a recipe and have one gallon of milk in the refrigerator, what fraction of the gallon would you use for the recipe?

There are 8 pints in a gallon. 2 of 8 or 2/8 or 1/4

Working backwards--there are 2 half-gallons in a gallon.
There are 2 quarts in a half gallon.
There are 2 pints in a quart.
A quart is 1/4 of a gallon.

 I did surface area problems with my 5th grader last night. :scared1: I feel your pain! :flower3:

He hardly ever brings his textbook home, but he did tonight. I finally started reading through it and my memory is being refreshed. It's just amazing what you forget through the years when you don't use that kind of math every day. Or some problems I know the answer, but can't begin to think how to explain it in a way that would make sense.
