Hard to believe, seems so long ago, yet seems like yesterday. Back on
this day, July 20th, 1969, man landed on the moon. There were no home
VCR's, DVD's, fax machines, cell phones, personal computers, home theater
systems, $25,000 Fords and Chevy's. No Walt Disney World. I recall
quite vividly, Marie and I (then dating, not even engaged), standing on the
sidewalk in front of her house, both looking up at the moon, eyes and mouths
agape, almost in disbelief of what we were witness to. Truly a moment in
history. For many here on the DIS, not even born then, I think it
difficult to comprehend the magnitude of the moment. For those who were
around then, I am sure they will always remember.

I was all of 9 years old then, and remember it well :) Very cool, Dan, Thanks.

Thanks, Dan. I remember my Dad waking us up to watch and the awe of everyone. Now - that was magic!!

Louise

Thanks, Dan. I was young at the time. In fact on that day I saw "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" at the movies!

dAN,
Thanks for the post. I was only 6 at the time and really did not remember it.
My DS's had a great time watching the videos you posted and looking at the photos!

Thanks for our history lesson today :D

Thank You DAN !!!
Excellent post! :)

As Fishsticks will quickly rise to declare me 'older THAN the moon'.....this brings back some wonderful memories.

I was not yet 8....and as was our custom my family was staying at our summer place. We didn't even have a TV....I remember my Dad and I going to buy the biggest Zeith (Black & White) tv set...and the best rabbitt ears we could find just so we could watch the landing. As it was so late I too was woken up to come downstairs to witness this most monumental of human endeavors climax.

I recall it being an extremely moving...spellbinding, breath-holding experience....I can still to this day remember the camera showing the control room in Houston and watching the people all clapping and smiling.....to me and to many....this technological achievement still serves as a guiding example of what we, as humans, are capable to doing if we hold an honorable goal and are willing to changellene ourselves.

Thanks Dan! :)

Thanks for the memories, Dan. I was home from college for the summer, reading The Andromeda Strain, wondering, could it be for real?

I was just a few days short of turning eight years old.

There were no home VCR's, DVD's...
However, not that this helps now, but back during the 20th anniversary, A&E had a program called "As It Happened" where they showed the launch, the moon walk, and the splashdown at the same time on the same dates that it happened. I recorded them and hopefully can get them transfered to DVD sometime.

Good weekend to watch "The Right Stuff", "Apollo 13" and "From Earth to the Moon" (although I haven't had a chance to see that one yet.)

I was 11 years old and my Brother was 16! He was very fascinated with the Apollo Program and had Pictures of Astronauts on his wall, next to a Poster of the Moon.;) Thanks for the Memories Dan.:o

Nevermind....made a mistake. I'll try again later.

Wow! I was 10 at the time (yikes! Richard is 10!) and remember it clearly. Thanks, Dan! ;)

I was 9 at the time, & my brother 8. We both remember it clearly. That was really special.

Thanks for the post, Dan. This was really good. :)

Wasn't even a twinkle in my parent's eye yet for this... something I wish I could have seen :)

...and just a couple of months later, The Beatles released Abbey Road. Good year, '69:D

I was 11, and my mom and I stayed up to watch. I remember she had a glass of wine to celebrate and I had a little of my own. :) Thanks for the memories...:)

Do OUR kids ever experience that kind of awe over anything these days? :(

Dan, I was 6 years old at the time, and I remember it. Thanks for the pictures, my 8yr. old son LOVED them!!!

I found a website where people posted their memories. http://www.wherewereyou.com/ I liked this one:
I was a junior Navy officer on a highly classified intelligence mission near Southeast Asia. We were cruising on the high seas and a Soviet "fishing trawler" was following us - as usual. They were about five or six miles astern. We had all been listening to radio broadcasts about the moon landing all day. When Neil Armstrong finally set foot on the moon and broadcast those memorable words, you can bet we were all filled with pride.

Our pride was even greater a few minutes later when we noticed that the Soviet trawler was sending us an old fashioned flashing light signal. We were all high-tech and it took us some time to find an old "radioman" that could read flashing light. He was very much out of practice, but after asking them to resend the message numerous times we were finally able to read the message.

"Congratulations, Americans!"

I will never forget the moment.
